Re: Ice Skating in Kidron - back in the 50's

Gwen Meier

Hi everybody,
We are back from our trip to Yellowstone.?? We had a wonderful time; saw lots of wildlife, including a grizzly.??? In addition, we saw 3 black bears (one just inches from our?car),?a coyote?tossing a snake up in the air,?a river otter swimming in the Yellowstone River, and tons of bison.??? We hiked several miles around the park and saw up close and personal the many flowers, mud pots, geysers, etc.?? We even saw a bald eagle on its nest at the top of a tree.??? The park was spectacular!!!!????
?
When I got home, I had 129 e-mail messages, mostly from you all.??? I loved it!!!!??? I contacted Betty Geiser about this ice skating pond.?? She e-mailed me back and said she remembers the pond well.??? She said it is on the Bob Romey property and when it would really get cold, he would build a fire.???
?
I have?my own?Halloween story to tell.??? Glenn and I stole an oil lantern from an Amish school.??? They lit it every night and we got the idea to take it and hang it on the flagpole outside of our high school.??? We did that.??? Several days later, I was riding around with Paul Zuercher, Louella Shane, and a couple more classmates at night (it was still Halloween season) and we drove by that same Amish school.?? Another lit lantern was setting on the steps.??? I talked my fellow classmates into stopping the car, turning off the lights, and we would get the lantern.??? We went sneaking across the field and when one of us picked up the lantern, gunshots went off.??? They were waiting for us......we all raced back to the car and sped off.???? Never in my life had I been so scared!!!!???? I remember Cookie ducking down on the floor in the back seat, fearful for her life!!!!??
?
About Meyers Lake, I remember that I, too, liked that ride that went out over the water.???? The first time I went on the roller coaster, I was scared out of my wits......I thought I was going to fall out.??? I was with Connie Bodager and she had been on it many times and she just took it in stride.??? Me......I was petrified!!!!????? Glenn and I went back to see where Meyers Lake Amusement Park had been last year while we were in Ohio and you are right, John, it is now all condos with just a hint of a lake there (mostly reeds and marshes).???
?
On the 4th of July, we would go to the Douglas Reunion (same as John) at Orr Park.??? My mother and his father were first cousins.??? To this day, that reunion still gets together on July 4th, but not at Orr Park.??? Clarabel Kurzen, Brenda Douglas, Floyd Douglas still attend.??? If I am in Ohio on the 4th, I go to this reunion.??? It has been many years since I have attended.??? Denise (our daughter) and Aaron (our son) have attended this reunion in recent years.?
?
More later.???
Gwen

Chuck:
Hi!? Well, maybe the pond you are talking about is it ???? It had a name.? I'm sure Betty Keiner or Harley Hofstetter would remember what it was called or whose pond it was.
?
Thanks for looking it up!

I remember a skating pond that was out in the country, a little northwest of Kidron.? It was just north of a crossroads that was one or two roads west of the Kidron road.? From what I can see on maps, it was either at what is now Hackett Road and South Kansas Road, or at Hackett Road and South Kohler Road.? I don't remember the name of the property.
?
On Google Satellite, you can see a pond near Hackett Road and South Kohler Road.
