Re: East Dallas Metroplex: Rockwall Rowlett - Anyone Online?

The meshmap.net shows a couple out in Rowlett that are sending status to MQTT. Not sure of any others... we're just getting started.

HAM mode question.

If the node is in HAM mode, will it still forward the encrypted packets? Docs show encryption is turned off when you select licensed operator.

You are correct.

Sorry,?
Not clear. Ham mode turns off encryption.

Re: HAM mode question.

So it wont pass through encrypted messages initiated by another device???

I have not seen that specific question raised, but I am guessing you would be right, as encrypted messages are illegal to hams in the US.
I would assume the software configuration would not decode anyone’s encrypted message. If I learn otherwise, I will report back here.

Re: HAM mode question.

Not so much decode, but for example, with what I have read the nodes will forward encrypted messages that are not in their destination. So would a node in HAM mode pass along another users encrypted traffic at full power even though it wont transmit an encrypted message for me at max pwr? Thanks again for your previous responses.?

You are thinking this a lot farther out than I have. I usually just take the simple route. :-)
I cannot give you a good answer, but I will try to research it a little more. My first response would be that the ham node would still pass the traffic, but not display any decoded text on the screen. As sure as I say that, I will probably be wrong.?
But I am going to research that information more.

Re: HAM mode question.

Hi Everyone,

So I have been looking into this as well and it appears the Ham Mode changes the operating frequency to UHF mhz range and will not pass any of the 915+mhz traffic at all. At least from what I've read so far. ?Benefits of the ham mode seems to get you more power/distance than the standard mode, but you loose encryption.

I'm also thinking you will also have a different antenna since you will be on UHF range and the 915+mhz probably will not run on same antenna? At least none I could find to purchase that had dual bands with those frequencies on any of the sites that sell these devices. If you find anything out different please correct me - I'm very new at this as well.

As a side note, some of the threads I read on this seemed to focus on areas that had a lot of traffic and it was "quieter" to switch over to the ham band mode as it has fewer people in high use areas.

Hope this helps, and if anyone finds out more on this let me know. ?I'm just getting my feet wet with his as well. ?I just got my first LilyGo TTGo Lora32 and planning on getting my first device working.

Thanks for sharing your projects! ?It's been a great help.

Thanks for looking into that.

Re: Show Your Mesh Nodes

All I need now is a solar panel, should have it up and running soon.

Comms Up in Plano

Just got a RAK Wireless up in Plano "Meshtastic 0168". Next I'll be getting one up for my wife as well. Look forward to the Dallas Mesh filling out!

Re: East Dallas Metroplex: Rockwall Rowlett - Anyone Online?

I just came up last night with Mesh 0168 in Plano.

RAK wireless named 0168 in Plano

New Home for Heltec V3

A bigger case with battery inside.

Texas Meshtastic on Facebook

If you're on Facebook, you might join the "Texas Meshtastic Club" public group. It's not really a club but I see there are 231 members now from all over the state.

The r/meshtastic group on Reddit is probably the top source for info though,?

Printed up a case in ABS, thinking about syra blu in a translucent color next.

Question: With all of the storms, power outages and CELL OUTAGES, has Meshtastic helped fill in the gap?

Just like the subject says...

Question: With all of the storms, power outages and CELL OUTAGES, has Meshtastic helped fill in the gap?

I'm curious to know how Meshtastic has or has not made a difference in the Dallas Area with all of the recent storms an localized damage to infrastructure.? Do you have a "Meshtastic saved my bacon" story?

Re: Question: With all of the storms, power outages and CELL OUTAGES, has Meshtastic helped fill in the gap?

I don't think there is currently a large enough mesh / coverage to make a difference at this time.

Re: Show Your Mesh Nodes

Almost done wiring it up, should flash the firmware sometime this week.
