Re: September 18 in RR History

September 18, 1957 Philadelphia Mayor Richardson Dilworth announced a last stand for rail restoration on former PCC route 42 via Market and Spruce Streets but this would have to be put off for 18 months because the unused tracks on the Market Street bridge over the Schuylkill River were removed and Chestnut Street bridge traffic was using Market Street. Bus routes 42 and D, which now used the same transfer, were rerouted eastbound via Woodland Avenue, Market, and 23rd Streets to Chestnut until the new bridge in Chestnut Street was built. But then on October 3, the West Philadelphia portion of route 42 became impassable; the city repaved the intersection of 46th and Spruce Streets and the trolley tracks were buried, ending route 42 rail restoration.? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
