Hi Guys
2
Just got thru rebuilding my DQ-10's that I got this summer. I remounted the woofers, installed the Regnar Cap kit, reglued the screen on the grills, put new grill cloth on, new foam pads, new weather stripping for the screen, and repainted. These babys are staying in the family if I have in the matter. These are the mirror imaged with the green caps, woofers are stamped 1981. After I installed the Regnar cap kit in and listen I was disappointed. Thou the overall was cleaner the drivers were not harmonizing (hope I spelled that right) like before. And the sound stage disappointed me. So it was time time modify. I noticed that the upper midrange leg of the crossover was changed from a 16uF to a 15uF. So I had a leftover 1uF cap from the old caps. Now I known these old caps are mylar but I thought about what Regnar had said about the cap for the lower midrange leg had to remain electrolyte for it to sound right. A mylar or metalized poly did't sound right in the lower leg. So I'm thinking what the hell lets try it. So I put them in as a bypass with jumpers and listened. Soundstage was back!! And just as clean as the Regnar kit. I couldn't believe it so I keep taking them off and putting them back on and no matter what I played it sounded better with the mylar bypass on the upper leg. So I soldered them in and as the Regnar kit broke in they only got better. Now I know you will find this hard to believe just as I did. But it worked for me. I'm just lucky I have a very understanding wife that lets me stay up to the wee hours of the night listening to them. I never get tired of hearing them.

Repair of DQ-10's
I have a pair of DQ-10's. They don't seem to sound as good as they used to but, to be honest, my hearing isn't as good as it used to be either. Recently one of them developed very bad distortion in the lower frequency range. I understand that it is probably the surround that has failed due to age. There is much specific information on this group. I am hoping someone could provide general information. Questions I have are: 1. Is it reasonable that I can repair the defective speaker? 2. What is the best place to buy repair parts? 3. Should I replace components in the crossovers? I gather that the capacitors either change capacitance or develop resistance due to age. Is this change appropriate for audiophiles who want to achieve the ultimate or might someone with diminished high-frequency hearing be able to hear the difference? 4. Should all the speakers be repaired even though they haven't failed like the one that has the high distortion? Any answers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Allan __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

More upgrade update :)
Hi all, Happy New Year! Wanted to give you some info on my just-completed DQ-10 project that I did for the holidays. I mirror-imaged my pair of speakers, and I upgraded the caps. First, thanks to JP for the recapping DIY info--this helped tremendously. Also, thanks to Durs for the support when I had some unexpected mishaps along the way. Okay, so onto the mirror imaging: Based on before/after comparisons, for me, the soundstage expanded in width after flipping around the left speaker. Any imaging improvement? Not certain, but the width of what I heard certainly broadened. Now, regarding the caps upgrade: I was able to do a bit of an A-B comparison between the first speaker I upgraded (the left one I had just mirrored) and the one that I had not yet recapped. Like Durs, I did not find dramatic improvements or any major differences between the old and new caps. There was nothing specific I could pinpoint in terms of sonic improvements, but maybe it seemed that the recapped speaker almost sounded like a layer of dust had just been removed from it--sound was a bit brighter, and my ear was more drawn to the left (modded) speaker. When I reassembled BOTH modded speakers, I believe that same improvement in brightness was still there, and my ear was less drawn to the left side, leading me to believe that, with both speakers now recapped, balance in brightness was again achieved, albeit at a new level. Was it worth it? Not sure. Glad it's done. As I'm quite an amateur with a soldering gun, it was quite a laborious process for me, with a few incidental mishaps. I went with the Solens caps per JP's recommendation, and fitting them into the crossover was not easy, especially the 80uF monster!!! Let's put it this way--it's not pretty work, but at least they're soldered in place...for now ;) Hope this is helpful. I'll be trying some new interconnects soon, and I'll post the results.

Next sonic level - Tube amp
6
Like the rest of you, I really enjoy my DQ-10's. I tweaked mine (see previous post) without really changing them. I didn't say that right. I did not want to swap out different drivers that would make them not DQ-10's anymore. So, the reason I am writing. The best thing I have done recently was changed from a Proton power amp, McIntosh pre-amp to a tube integrated amp. This sonic improvement was magical. Tens times better that the cap upgrade, rewiring, resonance damping, etc.. I had done to the speakers. Tube amps are much more musical than solid state. I highly encourage you to try a tube amp. Let me know what you think. I have to leave now because I am busy re-listening to every one of my CD's.

New Member Introduction
2
Hi All, Just a note to say hello and introduce myself. My name is James and I have owned my DQ-10s for a few months now. I have to say I can never go back. I think the prhase is "pry them from my cold dead fingers"(ears?) or something to that effect. I have had some lower end "high end wannabe" stereo gear over the years starting with some BPC Pioneer components that I bought new when I was 16. After 20 years I still have the JVC turntable and Bose speakers that I later added to that system but the rest is gone having long since failed and been given or thrown away. My last system was comprised of a Kenwood 60 wpc receiver and Pioneer CD changer that were given to me by a friend. It was ok and everything worked fine, but sounded like crap at higher volumes. All that changed a few months back when I decided to treat the my lady and I to a real system. So now, after several months and several hundred bucks we have a much improved sound system here at the house. I'm using my Sansui AU-717 as a preamp controlling a 200wpc Dynaco ST-410 amp to drive the DQ-10s. I can crank it as loud as I want and it sounds great. I had to replace one of the woofers and I have issues with blowing fuses after a while but I'll save that for another post. Things are sounding good. So good that I have been hearing many of my old CDs for the first time. So many new sounds that weren't there before. Sorta like I've been listening to MP3s the whole time and I just got the CDs. You guys probably know what I'm talking about. ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY DQ-10! -James

Regnar
Hi, Everyone, As I stated in a previous message, I'm new to the group. I've owned and loved a pair of DQ-10's since 1982. In all that time I've auditioned many, many speakers but I haven't been taken with any of them when compared to the Dahlquists. There was a $6,000 pair of B&W's that were wonderful -- but they were $6K. And, personally, i think the bigger Martin Logans are really nice, but I'm a snob and I don't want anything (unless unavoidable) that can be bought at Harvey Audio. And then there were ridiculously expensive models that I'll never be able to buy, like the Wilson Audio Modular Monitors. I'd love to own those gas plasma speakers from long ago. etc, etc. I plan to enjoy my DQ-10's for a long time. So. Regnar. Unless you're a technician, or an electronics hobbyist (I have the talent of neither), it seems like one is stuck with Regnar if one wants to keep the DQ-10's sounding great. In principal, that's fine with me. I once had my 10's refurbished by them and they did a wonderful, great job. It was bliss to hear them sounding so good again. The surrounds on the woofers were about to turn to crumbly dust when Regnar saved them for me. Here's the thing (two things): the Regnar guys are nice enough guys. That fellow Joe was very nice to me; I can tell they care about the quality of their work. Thing is, it always feels like they're nickel and diming me to death. On the phone I came away with one notion of what I'd be spending. In reality, they charge you (and I'm not exaggerating) for every washer, screw, inch of grille cloth, piece of paper. What sounded like a $300 to $400 renovation ended up as well over $700 when all was said and done. And I'm ok with that, too. But why not just give a standard price for a set scope of work? OK, make it $700, but then make me feel like you're taking care of me; in reality, you can charge me for all the tiny washers and such, but give me one price and then let me feel like you're taking care of every detail. Sitting on the phone telling me this piece of cardboard is $7, and that screw is $1.50 makes me feel like you're cheaping out on me. Better to figure a person who owns Dahlquists and will pay $700 to refurbish them is someone who wants quality, not pettiness -- and is willing to pay for it. Here's the other thing: I begged them to let me deliver my speakers to their shop (an hour's drive) rather than ship these ungainly things. They refused. I had to pay UPS $90 to get them to Regnar. And I packed them so they could have been dropped from an airplane without getting a nick or scratch. And let me add here that they were MINT. I mean MINT, as far as cosmetics goes. They came back sounding spectacular, but looking like hell. They were smashed! I still have the pictures to prove it. I'm tempted to post them. UPS completely flubbed the paperwork, so I got no satisfaction there. Regnar (expecially Joe) was suitably, honestly horrified. I feel quite confident he felt terrible about it and was willing to help me fix the problem, but he still insisted I'd have to ship them. So I gave up. They still look like hell and sound great, except recently one woofer is vibrating. Yech. The Regnar debacle was 10 years ago and still irks me. I still have answering machine messages from Joe trying to make it right -- but only if I ship them. Regnar shipped the speakers back in just a plain old box with vitrually no padding. I mean NO padding! Then UPS did their part. Thanks, UPS! So I suspect Regnar is run out of Joe's basement and they don't want us to know. But I wouldn't care if it were ran out of a 15-year-old's bedroom, or Joe's car, if the sound quality and the care are there. Obviously it still rankles me and I need to get a perspective and get a life! Well, I'm not a LOL type of email guy, but if I were I'd end my message that way. Anyway, nice to meet this group. Still reading? Paul

Can someone post DQ10 owner's manual in our group's files?

Hi all, Can someone scan the manual & post it into our files, just like the instructions for mirror-imaging? I bought my pair without a manual, and accessing it here sure beats paying Regnar $25 for a copy! Thanks! Michael

DQ-10 Tweeter is intermittent!
2
I am int he middle of restoring a pair of DQ-10's and realized I have a tweeter on one that is intermittent. When I tap on the front housing a few times I can get it to work but then it cuts out again! I disassembled it but it looks pretty delicate inside... I read some previous posts regarding a similar situation with the leads becoming corroded inside the tweeter....Is this common? Is there a fix? Thanks! -mike

Hi, everyone, Sorry about the duplicate notice of this. I thought when I checked the "send message to entire group" that the auto message would give the name of the file I uploaded. So this is to announce to those of you who have been waiting that I've made a pdf of my owners manual from way back and have put it in the Files section. Paul

DQ "5 Listening Lessons" brochure uploaded to files section
Hi, All, I want to share this other Dahlquist brochure that came with my DQ-10's way back. It's their take on how to evaluate and what to look for in a great speaker. Again, it doesn't say much you don't already know, but it's fun to have. I hope those of you who don't already have this piece will enjoy it. Paul

mirror imaging
3
Greetings and Solicitations all, After years and years, I finally obtained a pair of DQ-10s. I had heard about these speakers in 1977 and considered them the Holy Grail. I would like to know what makes a pair "mirror imaged"? I mean I think I know, and I think mine are, but to be honest, I am not really sure what exactly constitutes mirror imaging. Thanks for your anticipated replies. JLY
|
Thanks!!
Thank you for your swift replies. It appears that mine are indeed mirror imaged. I thought they were, based on the criteria mentioned, but thought maybe it was more complex than that. I have to say it is a joy to read your posts and relate to the joy you have listening to your DQ-10's. My next project is going to be a crossover upgrade. From all I have read, it seems like a worthwhile venture. Again, thank you for your replies!!

DQ-8
2
just got a pair of DQ-8. Does anyone have any info on these, manual, anything at all. Seems there is plenty about the DQ-10 and DQ-20 but nothing about the DQ-8. Can anyone help? I was also wondering if it's common to nix the grills and metal tweeter screens for a "Nude" presentation. Also wondering how important spikes are for this model, mine are without spikes. And finally, is there a mirror image with this model, a left and right, or are they identical by design? Thanks!

DQ-8 Tweeter Fuzz
5
Greetings, I am reconditioning a pair of DQ-8's, good condition, finally hooked up to an older second home back-up EV amp and one of the tweeters is fuzzing a bit, seems operational, but noticeable sonic distortion when music occupies upper register/vocals etc. I have read much about changing the Caps in these units, is this the possible culprit, or do I simply need to purchase a replacement Vifa and all is well? I am a newbie and still a bit intimidated about Caps etc...I always assumed a fuse would blow before a driver could blow, is this not so? Any tweeter advice would be very helpful, even appropriate replacement model for a DQ-8 would help too. Finally, what does replacing one of these involve? Just hooking it up to the existing exterior wires? Thanks! Blue
