Height Placement of DQ10s
I have my DQ10s raised with mid-woofer/tweeter at hear level at my listening position. ?This is raised about 7” above the intended height of the DQ10s on their original stands. ?Wondering if I should lower their height for a better vertical off-axis sound. ?I don’t hear any particular sound change when I stand up but I was wonder if others had a opinion about a raised DQ10 speaker height.

I have done a fair amount of work on this. Assuming a normally balanced system and traditional equilateral triangle layout the optimum listening axis is perpendicular to the top baffle both vertically and horizontally- originating from a point half way between the mid dome and tweeter vertically and between the mid and mid dome horizontally. This can be achieved either by raising the speaker and/ or tilting it back so the radiation axis intersects the corresponding ear canal (L to L , R to R) when seated at the MLP. This also means the speakers must be toed in about 30 degrees.
Of course you can try to do this by eye. However the results are likely to be only marginally better. This can be more reasonably approximated by using a non stretchy string and with the grill cover removed and using a helper to adjust the speaker. Start by holding on end of the string to your ear Tragus while seated normal at the MLP. By moving the sting in arcs you can define all the points that correspond to equal distances for each driver (measured to the intersection of the voicemail and the cones/dome) IGNORE the super tweeter. This will roughly define equal flight times of each signal path which will result in optimum signal summation. For best results repeat the the other speaker and ear to optimize imaging. If you can bear this effort the resulting change is not subtle.? ![]() |
Hello Charlie &
Happy New Year! How are you and how are things? I’m John Boros, from near Niagara Falls, in Canada. Nothing much to report here, every day is mostly the same, looking after my mother. I did, however, make the resistor changes, Charlie, late last summer, but, only took a reading, yesterday and likely did it wrong, but, would like to share it with you, get your sage feedback, if and when you have time. So, how about you, any new projects you’re working on? Again, hope all is well and thanks, John |
开云体育John, sorry for the delayed response. So good to hear from you. I hope you and your mother had a good Christmas under the circumstances.I looked at the readings and they look improved and very good indeed. Were these taken with the mic locate approximately mid way between the speakers? How far was it away from a plane between them? If you did take the measurements with the mic in a single central position that is OK. it just appears the it was 2.4 inches further from one speaker than the other. Let me know if this might have been the case. Otherwise no worries.? How does the system sound now? Due to the unusual design of the DQ10 for the best possible imaging it is important that your head be equally distant for each speaker with a tolerance of 1/2” ( 10mm). With the DQ10 it is also very important the toe in be set such that a plane midway between the cone and dome midrange and perpendicular to the woofer baffle passes directly through your ear for the corresponding side. For example the left speaker radiation plane passes through the left ear.? Cheers and best wishes, |
开云体育John,?sorry if I missed your response. Is everything OK? Charlie Conger 713 472 9140 On Jan 27, 2024, at 12:44?AM, Charlie Conger <ctconger@...> wrote:
