Dahlquist respect or lack thereof.

Has anyone noticed that a lot of people just don’t seem to get it about Dahlquists? ?Particularly the ones beyond the 10’s and sexier ones. ?

People just don’t seem to understand what they are or how they could dethrone some of the other usual suspects. ?For example, I picked up for free an old set of Boston Acoustics A150’s. ?(See waiting on the side in this pic, from when I was trying them out head to head with my m907’s yesterday). ?I posted a thread on Audiokarma and said how I really like them and I was lucky to inherit them for free (though I will want to refoam them at least) but that my m907’s were just better. ?The two speakers each have 1 inch dome tweeters, the Dahli’s having the VIFA’s, the BA’s having a BA tweeter, the BA’s have s 4.5 inch mid, and the m907’s the 5inch VIFA, and each having 10 inch woofers. ?

The m907’s want more power to get the same decibels out of the same streamed Tidal music I was using. ?But to me just a one good step above the BA’s. ?Seems like a few on the AK site just don’t understand how I could say that. ?Well, there it is. ?I passed up the BA’s (two way period version) in favor of my DQM-5’s back in the mid 80’s when I bought new for a reason. ?To me, I liked the balance, imaging, punchy tight bass, of the Dahli’s better. ?And the BA’s just seemed slightly shrill or harsh in the treble, tweeter range to me. ?Just my ears. ?

Anyway, do you guys run into that with your audio friends or people you meet or talk to? ?Not that it really matters as it is not a competition. ?But just fun to yack about with other appreciators of this brand.

There are better more practical options like that new Magnepan for about 1200-1500 which is new and sounds great without rebuilding crossovers and drivers etc which is too much trouble imo

I can relate completely. I bought a pair of DQ 12's and spent only $500 ...Sound is wide and deep, yet precise. I cannot believe what these speakers can do... I have heard Maggies and they cannot match?the fullness and richness. Many people simply have not heard of them or heard them and spend 2-3x the money on new gear.?

Virus-free.

I’ve owned my DQ10’s since 1980. I’ve listened to a variety of speakers, in an attempt to replace them and I found nothing to compare. The Maggie’s were on my list and while I found them very transparent, they completely lacked the dynamics of the DQ10’s, by comparison sounding flat and lifeless - I didn’t like them. I’m sure there are better sounding/performing speakers, but, you’re going to pay a great deal more!

Also, I think, when you listen to the same pair of speakers for 40 years, they’re bound to become your paradigm - something significantly better has to come along to displace them!?

I agree. Bought my pair in ‘76, they still have the ability to move me emotionally. Crossovers have been rebuilt , woofers too.

Recently added a pair of Vandersteens to the stable, they are fine speakers but am not sure they compare for “the itness factor”

Playing Shostakovich 11th on the DQ10’s is phenomenal.

It's an interesting contrast, but when you think about it as I have, Dahlquists (the legacy older products, and the DQ 10 in particular, not the newer or Canadian stuff) shares a lot in common with another iconic product from the past that also begins with a "D."

I speak of...yes...the DeLorean DMC-12 (even the name is reminiscent...DQ-10).

Both products were born from highly innovative, somewhat arrogant and fashionably flashy engineers (both were quite tall as well)
Both incorporated ground-breaking design that shook their respective industries when launched
Both had a "stop and stare" eye-catching look that grabbed your attention
Both founders met with tragedy shortly after their flagship products rose to fame
Both products have gone through periods of scorn and dismissal, only to rise again and again
Both have legions of fans, loyal without question despite decades of new products that claim to unseat them
Both lay claim to a design that has essentially never been duplicated in mass production (stainless steel body, gull-wing doors, 5 drivers and a complex crossover)
Both are embraced by guys who like to "tinker"
Both encompass the essence of late 70's/early 80's forward-looking design
Both are cause women to roll their eyes (and probably make a remark about manhood)
Both fit the definition of vintage and are regarded as collectors items by many
Both are closely associated with the idea of "time.' (Time travel, Time-corrected driver array)

Ok, that's all I have. Cue the Huey Lewis music.

Ditto John,

Owned mine since 1980 also. Had my choice of the DQ 10s or DCM Time Windows, remember those? They are a mirrored pair had the woofers reckoned some time ago but haven’t touched the crossovers yet.... ?

I too have gone to many stereo shows over the years, looking to replace the 10s. Everything that would be a candidate are really costly. The soundstage and like you, because I’ve listened to them so long it’s hard to compare. For 2 years I moved about and could only fit a bookshelf in the apartments so the 10s were stored. Now I’ve got them back up and enjoying every minute I play them.

?I‘be been toying with the idea of taking them to GR Research to get their analysis on what might be improved. Don’t know if you’ve seen his channel on YouTube but one service has has takes retail speakers and provides recommendations, upgrade crossover kits and Possibly upgraded driver suggestions. Otherwise, I might just take the info on this site and rebuild the crossovers myself.

Bryan,

I’m listening to Shostakovich’s 11th, enjoying it! Thank you for the recommendation! lol Parts of the 11th remind me of one of my favourites, Bartok’s Miraculous Mandarin - that piece gets my blood boiling! Love these speakers! And great on the Vandersteen mention, always wondered how they might compare!

Ok, Will, I can help but ask - did both men sell coke to subsidize their passions? lol?

Str8wire,

Yes, I’ve heard about the DCM Time Windows, but never had a chance to listen to them. When I chose my DQ10’s, the other candidate was the Bose 901’s, but after my first listen to the DQ10’s, listening to Tchaikovsky’s 1812 overture, driven by a 125 watt Bryston amp, at the Electronic Supermarket/Dino’s Sight and Sound, in Niagara Falls, I was sold! Neil Peart, the drummer from the band, Rush, was still living in the area and had also purchased a pair ... it was a long time ago, gee, 40 years ago, now ... life was good, then! lol

No, I’m not familiar with GR Research. I had Regnar rebuild mine about 15 years ago and while I’ve toyed with modifying them, I won’t bother until they’re in need of repair. It would be interesting for all of us, though, to know what they might find/recommend.

Thanks for the replies folks. ?Pretty much what I expected. I have heard the Time Windows, and they are very nice, but not as versatile as even my lowly m907’s in my opinion. ?Maybe someday I will run across a set of 10s I can restore for fun. ?But for now, I sure like my cabinet models. ?

Hi Sunvalleylaw,

Sorry to bump a couple year old thread. Man its hard to find fellow users of the M907's.
I got my pair from a guy local in Perth, Western Australia (downunder) I love my set, it was serviced and rubber was replaced around the woofers.
I have mine running to an integrated amp...a Redgum Sonofa 5500.
Looking to try get a vintage pre and power amp. But for now it does a great job :)
