DQ-20i Refoam Spacer

Hey all, my name is Matt (Milo63 on Audiokarma) and on the way to becoming an a/d/s fanboi I stumbled across Dahlquist.
I've got a pair of DQ-20i that the PO refoamed with rubbing voice coils. I've done lots of refoams with foam in front, foam in back, trim to fit and redo as necessary. This looks like a varsity project.....

As mentioned in other places the replacement inverted roll foam pulls the spider up from neutral necessitating a spacer. Is that a DIY project or does somebody have a side gig making and selling them?

Thanks for the group add admins!
Matt

Many refoam kits include thin plastic cards to use as spacers. If you don¡¯t happen to have these, I imagine you might be able to make some out of heavy paper. Depending on the voice coil gap, cutting up a notecard might work.

Good luck!

A process I used was to glue the voice coil first, let it dry, then hook the speaker up to an audio source and put the glue on the frame edge of the new foam. Now turn on the audio source to a 80 Hz test tone and the voice coil will center itself. Have to keep it on for about 30 minutes and keep checking the glued area to make sure it stays together.?

I can do the refoam, as I said I've done a bunch. My issue is the new foam not putting the cone at the correct height, it pulls the spider up about .2" from neutral.
Adding a spacer to the bottom of the masonite would push the cone down making the spider level again.?

I'm not a good fabricator but it looks like I'll have to try....

There¡¯s a few utube videos, simply speakers has one. I¡¯ve done a dozen or so and if you carefully center as the video shows you should have voice coil rubbing .

Nevermind, I think the project just hit a wall. One woofer is reading 0.4-0.6ohm and the other from MEGS to 7 ohms (both foams removed) as I move the cone about.

So I'm at:
-Find out if they're repairable
-Wait for a pair of woofers to show up
-Part out to recoup my investment
-Find a suitable replacement (non-starter as there are none that wouldn't degrade value.

Hi Matt,

I don't believe a spacer was ever required. And if you deem one is needed I'd seriously question if the surround or cone is correct. I've seen at least 5 different surrounds being marketed. With only one being correct. As for the VC readings, if your lucky the tensile wire may be shot or the solder joints failing.?

Best wishes
DD

Found this: /g/DahlquistSpeakers/topic/44466676#3413

To me, the spider should sit flat. Before I removed the foam the spider was pulled up about .2" from flat. It might not make a difference...it seems to not be a thing.

So, Large Advent woofers are the same, no? They're relatively cheap and readily available.

Project back from the brink!

Samuel, who sells the correct foam? I've got the Springfield Speaker version, they've always been solid with me.
