dating dq10

Hi people,
recently purchased some dq10.
is there a serial number list for dating them?mine 20945 and 20946

DQ-10 / DQ-20 woofers for sale

I have no connection to this sale. I just wanted to share the link with our community in case someone is looking for woofers.?

DQM-9C Tweeters

DQM-9C Tweeters

So I rescued a sadly abused pair of DQM-9C with dented/torn dust covers, no grill covers, and gouged cabinets. I had them in my workshop for a little while, but they just sounded awful, no top end from either tweeter (yea I checked the fuses). I pulled and desoldered them and both are dead measuring infinite resistance. So I did a little digging and these Magnet tweeters are different than my DQM-9’s MHTL-24G tweeter, as these are 8 ohm not 6.8 ohm. I think they may be a variant of the MHTL-26 series but it’s moot as there are no replacement tweeters out there, and no, Regnar lists none for any DQM Series.?

So, I have a few choices.?

  1. adapt another 8 ohm/90 dB tweeter
  2. Use a cheap Chinese silk 1” diaphragm kit and try to repair them?
  3. Find some working tweeters cheap
  4. Toss em and start over.?

Anyone have any experience with tweeter alternatives and/or tweeter repair kits? Or other ideas? These speakers are pretty rough and not worthy of living room habitation, but I love my 9s and want a pair out in the workshop. I currently have a pair of DQM-5s out there now, wonderful speakers, but they just don’t push enough air for that big of a space.?

Re: Restoring DQ-10, super muffled / distorted

Thank you for taking the time to respond.? Sadly, I did mean that the speakers make fart noises, and I'm even more ashamed to say it had nothing to do with the speakers.

I was using a hand-me-down receiver as a pre-amp to the power amplifier, and I didn't test it with other speakers first.? No idea why it caused that level of distortion, but I bypassed the receiver and everything worked perfectly, so I figured out it was one particular input on the receiver is totally messed up.? I switched to a different input and that works and now the speakers sound amazing.

DQ-10s (original) for sale

They have the little mid century legs. non-mirrored. I replaced one bass driver and the foam for both. All the other drivers work. All original, as far as I can tell. Sound great. $600/pr picked up sounds about right? (I haven't been tracking prices...)

Hit me with questions. Pics to follow.?

Re: Restoring DQ-10, super muffled / distorted

Of course getting all the polarities exactly, correct is a critical issue. However, that will not cause the issue described. likewise, bad capacitor’s will not cause issues you describe.

Re: Restoring DQ-10, super muffled / distorted

I don’t know what blowing raspberries sound like other than a fart like sound . Never heard a speaker do that.
Can you send an audio clip?
Lacking that I would focus on the woofers, particularly the refoamed one.
With the amp turned off gently push the woofer EVENLY in near the intersection of the voicecoil and cone until the suspension bottoms. Listen for scraping sounds. Then?rapidly remove your hand. The cone should take at least a few seconds to return to its resting position.
if it returns rapidly you have a leak, probably because the woofer is not sealed to the enclosure. It is very important that this is sealed tightly. Know that since you have the grill removed air is likely to leak out of the holes the screws make for attachment. You can temporally tape over those holes to eliminate that leak. Leaks can be hard to localize. You can use a mechanics stethoscope ?or something similar to find the leaks by listening for a air rushing sound.

f you hear rubbing when you push the cone in you will probably have to repeat the refoaming exercise paying very careful attention to voice-coil centering.

Re: Restoring DQ-10, super muffled / distorted

One thing - in one of the rebuild member guides, it mentions putting rope caulk behind the woofer when screwing it back into the main body.? I didn't notice any caulk when I took it out and didn't think to add any when I put it back in.? I doubt this is what is causing the issue, but I'm curious whether anyone thinks that is a big deal.? What would not including it do to the sound?

And as for the wires, I thought I wired it the way it was originally (colored wire to + terminal, white wire to - terminal of speaker), but I'm not 100% positive.? Again, I don't think that explains it sounding like blowing raspberries, but I want to resolve all potential issues if I can.

Restoring DQ-10, super muffled / distorted

Hi there,

I inherited a pair of Dahlquist DQ-10 and have been working on restoring them.? I had the amplifier professionally serviced, but I am working on the speakers myself.?

Last night I refoamed the woofers.? I was excited to reassemble everything and test it this morning, but it sounded horrible!? I assumed maybe it was due to the old 80 uF capacitor, so I replaced those with a much nicer pair, but the sound didn't change at all.? The high frequency content sounds normal, but when the bass drops it sounds like someone blowing raspberries.

I'm going to replace all the capacitors in the crossover tonight, but I wanted to check here to see whether anyone had other suggestions first.? The other capacitors are the yellow type that everyone said should still be good, so I'm confused why it still sounds like garbage.??

Do you think replacing all of the capacitors will fix the sound?? I can't think of anything else that I changed; the distortion isn't limited to the woofer that I refoamed, but if there is an obvious mistake to check (like if I inverted the polarity by mistake) then please let me know.? I checked the fuses and both are fine, although one was a 20A fuse so I think I need to replace it with a 2-3A fuse like it says.??

Re: Height Placement of DQ10s

Ed sure,
my pleasure. The tolerance is +/-1/4" or BETTER. if everything else is good you may be surprised with the results.

Re: Height Placement of DQ10s

Thanks, Charlie. ?Will try.

Re: Height Placement of DQ10s

I have done a fair amount of work on this. Assuming a normally balanced system and traditional equilateral triangle layout the optimum listening axis is perpendicular to the top baffle both vertically and horizontally- originating from a point half way between the mid dome and tweeter vertically and between the mid and mid dome horizontally. This can be achieved either by raising the speaker and/ or tilting it back so the radiation axis intersects the corresponding ear canal (L to L , R to R) when seated at the MLP. This also means the speakers must be toed in about 30 degrees.
Of course you can try to do this by eye. However the results are likely to be only marginally better.

This can be more reasonably approximated by using a non stretchy string and with the grill cover removed and using a helper to adjust the speaker. Start by holding on end of the string to your ear Tragus while seated normal at the MLP.
By moving the sting in arcs you can define all the points that correspond to equal distances for each driver (measured to the intersection of the voicemail and the cones/dome) IGNORE the super tweeter. This will roughly define equal flight times of each signal path which will result in optimum signal summation. For best results repeat the the other speaker and ear to optimize imaging. If you can bear this effort the resulting change is not subtle.?

Height Placement of DQ10s

I have my DQ10s raised with mid-woofer/tweeter at hear level at my listening position. ?This is raised about 7” above the intended height of the DQ10s on their original stands. ?Wondering if I should lower their height for a better vertical off-axis sound. ?I don’t hear any particular sound change when I stand up but I was wonder if others had a opinion about a raised DQ10 speaker height.

Re: DQ-20i replacement tweeter?

I got some 851200's installed. I eventually biamped them off the rear surround of my rxv1300 (110x6) and ended up blowing a woofer fuse. Seemed like one woofer was kinda rattling.

When I refoamed both woofers the cones seemed to be glued wonky. Maybe they just need woofer work too...?

Re: DQ10 Tweeter Fuse?

Would the ferro fluid need removal from the Visation tweeter?? I read somewhere that was reasonable and elsewhere maybe not so much.Replacing the tweeter seems much more reasonable than redoing the crossover.

Re: DQ10 Tweeter Fuse?

Not happy with sound but I have Tinnitus and am willing to have crossover/tweeter checked by those who know better than I and move on. Crossover vice tweeter or both is a choice I am willing to make.
Your input has been helpful.? I have owned these speakers for around 45 years and hope to leave them to a child who will appreciate them.? My hope is to get them "close" to original as I can.?

I now use a Peachtree amp for music (vice a HK 16a I purchased at the same time) and I now run AVR/Home Theater through that Peachtree amp as well as stereo HiFi.? It works; the amp is fine; I will soon upgrade my current AVR and move on/ it's all a compromise between stereo and home theater in one system (although I could, spouse permitting, use two home separate spaces for each).? There are multiple options to replace the DQ-10s as main speakers, but I am emotionally (and perhaps musically) tied to them as a legacy thing.? Again, thank you for the input.

Dq1

Any one have 1 dq1 not needing? Thx

Re: DQ10 Tweeter Fuse?

Roy, are you happy with the sound as is? If you are I would suggest leaving the tweeter in place.
That is a higher quality tweeter than the original BUT it is a difference impedance and sensitivity so the crossover, if original, will not work as well with it.
?
if you are not happy with the sound then you would either have to replace the tweeter with the original or a reasonably close modern equivalent like this
,
or redesign/ modify the crossover.
The mod will, at least, add a parallel resistor to make the new tweeter have lower, and similar, ?impedance. It may also require an additional series resistor to lower the level of your new tweeter.
This is best done using measurements and the knowledge in both how to accurately make and interpret them. Although it is possible to do this by trial and error the likelihood of good results is low unless you are very talented and have good ears.?

Re: DQ10 Tweeter Fuse?

Thanks for all responses.? I am going to take back that the tweeter has not been replaced; I must have at some point (probably late 90s because of the apparent date of manufacture).? It is a SEAS (guessing b/c it says made in Norway) 27 TFFD 6 ohm dome tweeter.??

Given that it's not original; would anyone know if that is a good fit, or should it be replaced (since the original was 4 ohms)??

Re: DQ10 Tweeter Fuse?

There are several anomalies on my speakers compared to other pictures I have seen of other speakers while I've been doing research largely regarding the need to recap the crossovers.? When I could not find a serial number, I used this site to try and get a fix on what was what, beginning with the lack of a fuse holder next to the tweeter but the existence of an AGC 3 fuse/fuse holder on the back.? I actually talked to "Joe" at Regnar/Dahlquist trying to zero in on it. He seemed helpful, but I decided to use a local vintage audio repair shop to update the crossovers since the Regnar/Dahlquist prices seemed unusually high. I'll post more pictures, to show the other "anomalies with the speakers; I'm finding this discussion to be very helpful in helping me decide what needs to be updated other than the crossovers, and, in fact, what nature of DQ-10s do I really have.? Additional photos will also reveal at some point there was some kind of "fix" to the tweeter board on the left side speaker.?

As for reference, again, I am (as far as i know) the original owner.? I received the speakers via an audio club while stationed in Greece in 1977.? How they got to the audio club I have no recollection.? The only thing I have ever done to the speakers is refoam the woofers and occasionally remove dust from the back.? I started this post since I am very curious to know what I ought to consider re updating the speakers and whether it's worth the effort since I have no desire to do any rewiring or soldering on the speakers myself.? Thanks to everyone for all the input.
