Re: DQ10 Woofer Distortion
Ed when in circuit that is about right and indicates the resistors are probably OK. The voice coil should also not be melted.
Still could be mis centering or voice coil deformation. Did the speaker make any popping sounds before you noticed this distortion? If so you probably have a situation where the voice coil contacts the back plate and bends the coil in or out.?
Generally easier to just replace if that is the case. |
Re: DQ10 Woofer Distortion
I have a set of original yellow cap xo’s in storage. I’m not sure what’s going on with your xo ‘s, but the lQQk a mess with wires cut and bridged . I’m sure you know ?that some of the cap connections have bridges under the board. Theres images in the files illustrating the connections? Re: DQ10 Woofer Distortion
Charlie, thanks the suggestion. ?A quick measurement of the 4ohm resistors shows 2.9 ohms each. ?I do have a left and right sub, but unfortunately at some point decided to send full range from the Sub harm. synth ?to the DQ10s, instead high pass (a switch on the dBX 120 sub-harm synth). ?This may have been my mistake. ?I will still try the 180 rotation. ? |
Re: DQ10 Woofer Distortion
The sub harmonic synth may have damaged the woofer by causing it to try to reproduce frequencies below what it is capable of.?
It could be a bent or misshaped voice coil or maybe the surround has torn loose on one side. Inverting the woofer as described may work, at least temporarily. ?
But based on your curves I suspect the two 4 ohm resistors that are wired in parallel with left woofer. If they show any signs of burning be suspicious. Either way you might want ?to test ?with an ohmmeter. Measure across the wires that go to the woofer. (Usually green and white) Anything higher than 5 ohms means those resistors are burned open and both should be replaced.?
In either case if you want more bass you might want add sub(s) and a crossover that properly high passes the DQ10.?
Let us know if you need any help.

Re: DQ10 Woofer Distortion
Woofer rotation solved my similar?problem with a Bozak B302a.? So certainly good advice.? I have DQ-20 too and never had to rotate but Bozak was probably ten years older?

开云体育Just a thought…Unscrew the woofer, rotate it 180 degrees and reinstall. ?? These are old drivers and if you have some sag in the woofer this might resolve it. ? It costs nothing to test it.? On Feb 9, 2025, at 3:40?PM, katie8664hall via groups.io <katie8664hall@...> wrote:

Re: Alon IV dq 20 replica
One56Way was Jon’s next door neighbor. I was able to hunt her down from a msg she posted on a forum. Finally found her through Etsy. She also owns or runs a Gentleman’s club on Long Island I think. She is a nice lady. Her email is imbedded in one of my previous msgs.
I suppose if one lived on or near Long Island they could possibly locate Jon and visit him in assisted living. Given a proper introduction he could very well enjoy it.?
My wife does genealogy. I can’t tell you how many times she has said she wished she had a chance to talk to old timers before they passed. |
Re: Alon IV dq 20 replica
Thanks for this information. My first exposure to the 10's was in high school and I saved every nickel to buy a pair. Many years pass....but when I heard about the back story of Jon it stuck with me. Such an interesting "character" and pioneer in audio, struck down so dramatically (at arguably what might have been his career his peak). And then decades of silence as to his situation, state of function and whereabouts. It all just added to the fascination and desire for answers. I had always hoped he'd re-emerge, limited by whatever physical capabilities of course, to acknowledge those who love his designs and want the story behind them.? To be gifted his personal pair of 10"s - absolutely amazing!!! I don't suppose you got a photo of the two of you? Did you find him to be "eccentric" or just a cranky old man? The fact he "lit up" when you mentioned his speakers suggests to me he was still very much oriented and ready to chat, but I could be wrong.
?
Curious - who is "One56Way" and their connection to Jon?
?
I guess this matter is closed since he's in assisted living. Sad to ponder. Almost has a James Dean/Steve Jobs aspect to it.
?
Sending same response to Charlie since he has background on this too.

Re: Alon IV dq 20 replica
开云体育Here’s the eBay messages from April: A quick story I love to tell... When I purchased my dental practice in 1998, one day Jon was in the schedule for a cleaning. The staff pulled me aside and warned me that Mr. Dahlquist was very eccentric and i wasn't to engage him in heavy conversation. I went in, introduced myself, and my first question was "Did you have anything to do with the Dahlquist DQ-10 speakers?" Needless to say, he lit up. We engaged in heavy conversation for the next 20 minutes. He was very impressed that I received my DMD from Tufts Dental School in Boston. We fell in love!!! We've had a great relationship ever since and I was blessed when he offered ME his personal pair of DQ-10's. I definitely impressed my staff that day as well. Memories, Very fond ones! ?I'd appreciate your help. Hi godd186, My office mgr tells me Jon moved into assisted living a few months ago, and did sell his house. Pete, I have communicated with the Woman called ?One56way in the above mentioned thread. She confirmed that Jon was still alive. This was some time ago- Sept 2022. She said :

Message:”Sorry I just read your email. As far as I know Jon is still alive. I have not seen him in quite sometime and I believe he has a caretaker. If you would like send me an email rori at billydeans dot com and a detailed note, I will leave it in his door. I believe you sent me an email as I recall and I know I brought it to him personally. I went through the extent of explaining why you were trying to reach him. My guess is he never responded. That was the last time I saw him. I can only say he is a very nice man however has always been a bit eccentric. That was a few years ago and his health was not great at the time. I can't believe you found me here of all places, I rarely look at the emails on Etsy. If you googled me you would have found me at either my business or Facebook. I understand the passion of wanting to connect with your guru as I too have tracked down people for different reasons. I will try again if you like, send me a note and include your phone number. Who knows maybe he is not a computer person?
After discussing the potential for contact with member(s) of this ground it was decide it best to leave him alone.
However since then his house has been sold and he was moved to a facility for better care. So the contact has sadly been lost.? |
