Hero
cat in Mississippi helped prevent a robbery, possibly even
saved a man's life
Calico
cat came to its owner's rescue in the middle of the night
Cats are known to bring comfort.
Companionship.
Kindness.?
(Well,
not always the latter, if you really know cats.)
But few??— as particular, finicky and
independent as many of them can be — can also be branded
a "hero" for helping to prevent a house robbery and for
possibly even saving a life.?
A man
in?, reported that his cat, Bandit, did
all of this and perhaps more last month.
Bandit
is a 20-pound (9.1-kilogram) calico cat.?
She
lives with her owner Fred Everitt, 68, a retired oral
and maxillofacial surgeon, in the Tupelo suburb of
Belden.

When at
least two people tried to break into the family's home
last week, the cat did everything she could to alert
Everitt to the danger, he told the Northeast Mississippi
Daily Journal, as the AP reported.
The
cat apparently raced into the bedroom and jumped onto
the bed.
"You
hear of guard dogs," said Everitt.
"This
is a guard cat."
The
attempted crime occurred sometime between 2:30 a.m. and
3 a.m. on July 25, Everitt said.?
A retiree's cat —
looking very much like the one shown here —
reportedly helped ward off two would-be robbers in
Belden, Mississippi, last month.
First,
Bandit’s guttural meowing in the kitchen awakened
Everitt.
Then,
the cat apparently raced into his bedroom, jumped onto
the bed and began pulling the comforter off Everett and
clawing at his arms.?
Everitt
knew that something had to be very wrong indeed.
He
said he thought, "What in the world is wrong with
you?’"
"She
had never done that before," Everitt said, as the Daily
Journal and the AP reported.
He said
he thought, "What in the world is wrong with you?’"
Everitt
related that he got up, put on his robe, walked down the
hall to investigate.
When he
turned on a light, he saw two young men standing outside
his back door.?
"I think it's
only because of the cat," said Everitt of Belden,
Mississippi, that the situation at his back door did
not turn "confrontational."?(iStock)
One had
a handgun — while the other was using a crowbar to try
to pry the back door of his house open, he said.
Everitt
said by the time he retrieved a handgun of his own and
returned to the kitchen, the would-be intruders had fled
already.?
Everitt
did not call?, he told the publication.
He said
the situation could have been much different without
Bandit.
While
he thought he was saving her life — and possibly he
did — it seems that she, in turn, now may have helped
save his.?
"It did
not turn into a confrontational situation, thank
goodness," Everitt said.
"But I
think it’s only because of the cat," he told?
Everitt
adopted his cat Bandit from the Tupelo-Lee Humane
Society four years ago.
While
he thought he was saving her life — and possibly he did
— it seems that she, in turn, now may have helped save
his.?
The
Tupelo Lee Humane Society is a no-kill shelter.?
On its
website, it states that its mission is to promote humane
treatment, prevent cruelty, provide education and end
pet overpopulation.

The
next time anyone thinks of cats as troublesome, aloof or
particular — remember that they can be guardians, too.?

Short Story - Companionship - (Dog Story)
Companionship
by??|?Feb 19, 2022?|??|?

Megan watched Henry shuffle out of
church, head down. Her heart hurt for him. Ever since his wife
passed away last year, it was as if the life left him as well.
He still faithfully attended worship each Sunday, but nothing
more. ?He no longer sang in the choir, no longer attended the
men’s breakfasts, no longer volunteered. Megan had visited him
on a few occasions, but he seemed to have lost the will to
live. How she longed to find something to bring meaning back
into his life.
She pulled on her jacket and made
her way out of the church, praying for Henry. “God, You know
how much Henry needs you. Please help him find his way. And if
you want to use me to help him, I’m willing.” She drove the
long way home, enjoying the country scenery on this crisp
autumn day. On a whim, she pulled into the local park, wanting
to get some fresh air. She strolled along the walking paths,
her mind still on Henry, when a fat bulldog approached her.
“Hey fella,” she cooed, stroking
him behind the ears. She glanced around for the owner, but
there was no one in sight. “Where’s your owner?”
The dog cocked his head at her. No
tags. Megan straightened and continued walking along the path,
trying to decide what to do about him. He trotted right
alongside her.
Megan laughed. “Well, you certainly
seem to be good company. Don’t get me in trouble for having a
dog without a leash in the park, though.” She followed the
loop back to her car, and the dog followed along. Megan
shielded her eyes with her hand and scanned the park. No one
seemed to be looking for a lost dog. “Fine. Come on.” She let
the dog into the back seat and drove him to the animal
shelter.
“I found this guy in the park this
afternoon,” she told the woman at the front desk.
The woman gave the dog a once-over.
“Seems like a friendly guy. I just need you to fill out some
paperwork. Hopefully his owner will come looking for him.”
“And if not?” Megan glanced around
the packed shelter, barks and howls echoing off the walls.”
“We’ll keep him for a week, but if
no one claims him, he may need to be euthanized. We’re
completely full, as you can see.”
The mere thought of it was enough
to bring tears to Megan’s eyes. The poor dog. “Hopefully his
owner will find him soon.” She filled out the paperwork and
was soon on her way back home.
As Megan lay in bed that evening,
her mind raced. She still hadn’t thought of any way to help
Henry. And why had God led her to the park, to the dog that
would probably end up getting killed?
She bolted upright in bed. Of
course! That was the answer.
At the end of the week, Megan
called the animal shelter to ask about the dog. “Has anyone
claimed him?”
?“No. Do you want to take him home
with you?”
“No, my apartment won’t allow pets,
but I do know someone who would have the perfect home for him.
Can I take him to meet him?”
Later that afternoon, Megan stood
with the dog on Henry’s porch. She rang the bell, and a minute
later, Henry appeared, as withdrawn and forlorn as usual,
until he looked down and saw the bulldog. “Buster!” he cried,
and bent down to pet the dog. His face filled with a radiant
smile, but then it fell. “Of course, you’re not Buster. You
sure look like him, though.”
“Who’s Buster? Megan asked.
“I had a bulldog just like this
growing up. We were inseparable. He was the best friend a boy
could have.”
“How would you like to have a new
friend?” Megan asked, gesturing to the dog.
“You mean he’s for me?” Henry
asked.
“If you’ll have him. He needs a
home, and my apartment won’t allow dogs. If he goes back to
the animal shelter, they’ll have to euthanize him. But here,
you have a yard where he could run, and…
Henry’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’ll take him.”
The next week after church, Megan
nearly dropped her coffee when Henry came over to speak with
her. The spark was back.
“I wanted to thank you for bringing
Duke to me. We’ve been going for walks around the
neighborhood. In fact, just the other day, as we were walking
around the block, Nina was out in her yard. She invited us in
for some cookies. Can you imagine that? Why, I haven’t had
homemade cookies like that since before Ellen got sick. I tell
you, if old Duke can keep getting me in good with the ladies,
I’m bound to get some good meals out of it.”
As Henry left, the shuffle was less
of a shuffle. Was there a spring to his step? Megan’s heart
filled with joy. Love. She sent up a silent prayer of thanks
to God for allowing her to be a part of his plan for Henry.
All he needed was someone to love.
1 Corinthians 13: 13
And now these three remain: faith,
hope and love. But?the greatest of these is love.?
God, thank You
for all the ways You have surrounded us with love. From
family to friends to pets, You’ve shown Your love for us by
surrounding us with the love of others. Please help us to
recognize when others need help, and please help us be the
blessing they need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

beagles rescued from Virginia breeding facility in need of
new homes
Humane
Society of the United States, Department of Justice are
working out a rescue plan
Thousands of beagles are being rescued from a
dog?in Virginia, and they’re in
need of new homes.
The Humane Society of the United States
announced that approximately 4,000 beagles will be
removed from Envigo, a medical contract breeding
facility that has been accused of having unfit
conditions.
Envigo’s
facility in Cumberland, Virginia, was taken to court in
2021 after the USDA and other law enforcement agencies
found multiple federal violations.
In a
filed complaint with the U.S. District Court in the
Western District of Virginia,??were said to be
underfed, injured and sick. The dogs were reportedly
kept in small spaces where feces piled up.
Homeward Trails,
a Virginia-based animal shelter, rescued beagles
from the Envigo breeding facility in Cumberland, Va.
The beagles were bred for medical research purposes.?(Sue
Bell/Homeward Trails)
The
complaint also alleged the dogs received inadequate
medical care and were subject to painful??experiments. Court records
stated that more than 300 puppies died at the facility
between January and July of last year.
Fox
News Digital reached out to Envigo for comment.
In June
2022, Envigo’s parent company, Inotiv, publicly
announced it plans to shutter the facility.
The
Humane Society says it worked with the United States
Department of Justice to develop a transfer plan that’ll
move the remaining??around the
country.

Society of the United States is working with the

"At
this time, we are connecting with our shelter and rescue
partners and preparing to take on the monumental process
of securing placement for these dogs," the Humane
Society wrote in a statement, on July 7.
"The
transfer plan was jointly submitted to the Court for
approval by Envigo, the Department of Justice and the
Humane Society of the United States," the statement
continued. "Now that the Court has approved the joint
transfer plan, we and our partners are preparing to move
quickly to place these beagles in?."

4,000 beagles.?(Sue Bell/Homeward

This
time around, Homeward Trails will facilitate the
transfer of another 1,500 beagles to partner
organizations.
"We
hope to start this process around July 19th," Homeward
Trails' Executive Director Sue Bell wrote in an email to
Fox News Digital.?
?
A court
order issued by Judge Norman K. Moon motioned for the
government to step in and come up with a "plan for the
expeditious removal of all dogs remaining at the
Cumberland facility."
Envigo
and the Department of Justice "have jointly submitted a
mutually agreed transfer plan to the United States
District Court in the Western District of Virginia," a
spokesperson for Inotiv told Fox News Digital.
"The
judge has approved such plan which will allow for the
orderly transfer of canines to various adoption and
sheltering agencies through a third-party organization,"
Inotiv’s statement continued. "We anticipate that this
orderly process will be complete within approximately 60
days."
Beagles are a

Kennel Club.?(Sue Bell/Homeward

Beagles
are a hound group dog that’s said to be "friendly,"
"curious" and "merry," according to the American Kennel
Club.
The
breed is a small one that can grow up to 15 inches in
height and weigh up to 30 pounds. They have a 10- to
15-year life expectancy and tend to be??and well-behaved with
children and other dogs.
Melissa
McWilliams, the chief development direct of the Beagle
Freedom Project – a nonprofit animal rescue organization
headquartered in Valley Village, California, told Fox
News Digital that the rescued beagles will require
special care, much like other rescued lab animals.
"Even
though these animals were liberated before they were
sold to testing facilities, they still have trauma and
behaviors that are foreign to many families opening up
their homes to these animals," McWilliams said. "For
these purpose-bred beagles, they have never received a
kind touch, nutritious food or even a treat, had an
opportunity to play, or know what grass feels like."?
She
continued, "These beagles can be extremely fearful,
especially in the first few weeks outside the breeding
facility, which is overwhelming for many unprepared
families because they require so much care and
attention.?Patience is the most important part of their
healing process."
The rescued lab
beagles will likely require special care.?(Sue
Bell/Homeward Trails)
McWilliams
said potential foster and adoptive families will need to
put in extra time for potty training, socializing (with
humans and dogs), finding the right dog food, securing
their home and staying up to date on veterinary care.?
Beagle
Freedom Project has created a Care Guide for Envigo
Beagles document that breaks down everything potential
dog owners need to know about the special needs that lab
dogs have.?

US Navy sailors

Nonprofit Paws of War helped transport the Johnsons'

Two??in
the Middle East faced terrible abuse and almost-certain death
until two U.S. Navy sailors not only rescued them — but found
a way to get them out of there and on toward a safer,
healthier and far happier life.?
Married??Chief
Petty Officer Matt Johnson and veteran Coreen Johnson first
made the decision to take in the two needy pups, Ruby and
Sunny, while the couple were deployed to the Middle East.
However, the news that they would be transferred to
Japan threatened the family of four's ability to stick
together — and Coreen expressed her intense worry about it in
an interview with Fox News Digital.
"We were just kind of left not knowing what to do,"
she said.
With limited resources within the military to
transport the two animals to the couple's next duty stations,
the Johnsons reached out to the Long Island, New York-based
nonprofit Paws of War for "immediate" help.

"I didn't know what to do because we had to leave,
and I could not live without them," she said.
"We don't have children of our own," she added. "?— and
Paws of War totally understood that."?
The New York-based Paws of War, headed by co-founder
Robert Misseri, has brought over 300 dogs and cats — all
rescued by American troops overseas — to safety in the U.S.
since 2014, according to its website.
Familiar with the immense challenges of getting
rescue animals out of the Middle East, Paws of War was able to
locate a flight to Japan for the dogs — and it all happened
just this past Sunday.

Now that the sailors and dogs are officially
reunited, Coreen shared her bliss at having the family of four
back together.
"We didn't know what to do with ourselves without
them," she said. "We’ve been kind of wandering around just
missing them," she said.?
"Now we're so happy."
"We don't need our stuff. We're just happy to
have [the dogs] with us."
Coreen added with a laugh that even though their new
home is not furnished yet, Ruby and Sunny are all they need.
"We don't need our stuff," she said. "We're just
happy to have them with us."

Officer Matt Johnson and Navy veteran Coreen Johnson snap

are our family," said CPO Johnson.??(Paws of War)
Chief Johnson agreed that reuniting with the dogs
restores a sense of "purpose" in their lives.
"The dogs are our family," he said. "It brings back
purpose to the family."
Mutual love of
animals
The Johnsons first connected with each other because
of their mutual love of animals.
They met for the first time in the barracks when
they were stationed?. Matt
was on a walk with his dog at the time — and Coreen stopped to
pet the animal.
"I was really homesick," she said. "All I wanted to
do was pet his dog."?
(That dog of Matt's has since passed away.)?
Meanwhile, Navy veteran Coreen, who left the service
in 2013, explained that her passion for animals motivated her
to help with the animal population in the Middle East. That,
in turn, is what led to the couple's rescue of Ruby and Sunny.

"I fell in love with these two dogs," said Coreen,
"and we absolutely had to take them with us."
"We couldn't leave them there in the current
situation of the Middle East. We just couldn't leave them
behind."
Bait for a
dogfighting ring
The Johnsons first came across little Ruby, who was
being held as bait for a dogfighting ring.
The small Jack Russell terrier mix happened to stick
her nose through a hole in the metal fence where she was
confined — and the Johnsons noticed her.

The Johnsons negotiated with the owners to take Ruby
out of harm’s way for $10.
Coreen Johnson discovered the couple's second
rescue, Sunny.
She found the injured and severely abused dog lying
on the side of the road.?
Misseri of Paws of War revealed to Fox News Digital that a group
of kids attempted to light Sunny on fire.
This is how poor Sunny
was found in the Middle East — abused and badly injured.
"We had to save him," said Coreen Johnson.?(Paws of War)
"He had burns on his body. He was hit by a car. His
skull was fractured," Coreen said.?
"We had to save him."
Coreen shared that Sunny — whom she considers a
"horse dog" based on his large stature — got his name because
of his positive disposition, despite the rough times he
clearly endured.

and cats" program. It helps U.S. service members who have
saved an animal while serving overseas bring those animals to
safety in the U.S.
In addition, says Paws of War, it works to "rescue,
train and place shelter dogs to serve and provide independence
to our veterans and first responders [who] suffer from
traumatic effects sustained while serving their country and
community. We provide essential and supportive services to our
heroes in need."
