Cheap Disk Drives
aburkefl
Yesterday, Rich and I exchanged notes about the cost and size of disk drives over the years. Yesterday, in pursuit of an addition to my HD DVR, I was able to purchase an external WD hard drive - 1 TB, that's 1 terrabyte or 1,000 gigs! - for $140 including the case.
The interfaces available are USB 2.0 and SATA. My HD DVR has a port for the SATA interface. Just plugged it in and the "system" formatted it and used it right away. Just can't believe how big - and inexpensive - drives have become. Art - N4PJ |

It is indeed amazing how cheap mass storage has become!! But (this question is a tiny bit off-topic), what I really want to know is: What kind of DVR did you try this on?? I'd LOVE to be able to add a TB to my DVR (Verizon FiOS, a Motorola QIP 7216). Do you (or anyone else) know if a SATA drive will plug-n-play in this DVR with the Verizon software?? How do you use it with DXLabs? And why would you want to watch 20 hours of ANYTHING, when you could be using Ham Radio????? Life is about...Priorities.... LOL On 12/3/2009 9:23:48 AM, Gil rojomn Charter (rojomn@...) wrote:

I'm sure Art will answer but I'll guess that it is a DircTV HD DVR. I've got one too and although I haven't attempted to add an external drive it has the capability of adding a USB or SATA external hard drive. That also has the neat capability of connecting it to a router wired or wireless with an add on accessory so that you can access it over your computer network and view saved TV movies or programs on your PC via a free downloadable App called DIRECTVTOPC. It's unbelievable how things are becoming so integrated these days! Pretty soon, TV's and PC's will be pretty much the same thing!

Bye the way I've seen 1 TB external drives advertised for prices like $79.99 although I don't think those had the SATA capability. 73, Rich - W3ZJ Chuck Goelz wrote: Art, |

Cheap drives are great. Here I run 4x500gb in a RAID 1+0 for my ham rig. It's very fast and redundant - when (not if) a drive fails, I just replace it and the system rebuilds the array in the background - saves a tremendous amount of headaches in the long run. My DXLAB applications really fly on that drive.

I just purchased a replacement 19 inch lcd tv which is sitting right here next to my two computer screens. In fact, it also has a computer input. The satellite box is connected to it, as well as a "security"s camera, that is pointed out in the back yard, where I can see two of my beams rotating as well as the weather to the north and east west (lightning monitor). Our tv boxes have DVRs built in, with 40 hours copy available. The tv is set up for closed caption on, all the time, so its no problem to DX with DXLab and watch tv at the same time.

Spot Spy is a DXL add on written by DL9HO, hence the German site.
If you have Spot Spy installed and running. 1. Click on the Config button 2. Click on the tab labeled Alarms 3. Check the box Send E-mail (Note in the US/Canada, you probably will never use the SMS config as is requires an SMS provider gateway) 4. In the email config, enter your "email address" of your cell phone to send SMS messages a. See in order to determine your email address of your cell phone in order to send SMS messages to it. b. For instance if your provider is Verizon, use 1234567890@... (replace the numbers with your 10 digit cell number) 5. Enter the email server info like you did for your PC email client (outlook, etc) 6. You can set the alert triggers under the Alarms tab as well, in addition to using the Needed Callsigns tab to enter specific calls, modes and bands. There are a bunch of other features, but that should get you started. 73, Cliff K3LL From: dxlab@... Your DVR must be able to accept something like this. When I first bought the DVR almost three years ago, the manual made reference to the USB port, the SATA port and the Ethernet port as - "for future use." The future has arrived!

My HD DVR is a DirecTV (originally purchased at Circuit City) HR20. I found out on the DirecTV website (tips and tricks) about adding the external drive. If you're only looking for a drive for backup/storage, I found a number of even cheaper drives, butr I specifically needed one with the SATA capability. It's also possible I could have disassembled the DVR and replaced the existing hard drive. I was reluctant to do that. Art - N4PJ --- In dxlab@..., "Chuck Goelz" <c.goelz@...> wrote:

In addition to the amount of disk storage, I couldn't believe the small size of this one. I have a 500 GB MyBook and this little guy is half that size! I can feel that it's running, but I can't hear it. For the guys wanting to know how I can do DXLabs and TV at the same time - we took the low tech approach - we have a baby monitor system with the TX in the shack and the RX wherever we want it to be. When Joe DX hollers we come a-running! I keep threatening to make recordings to create our own Josephine DX so we have different voices - one for the wife and one for me. At the moment, our workaround is to have her version announce the callsign while mine doesn't. As soon as we hear a callsign, we know "...it's for you dear!"
