DXLab Worth; Installation Issues
Gabor Morocz
开云体育Hi, ? I am a new would-be user of DXLab but after seeing all the deep computer technical issues listed here on this list and suffering failures on the first attempt to just install the software I wonder if it even worth the effort. I have a brand-new laptop with Win 11. The Launcher installed but was not listed in the DX Lab folder. Commander had installation errors, the update had errors. It did not even list my radio (FT-991A). Then, it said it was already running where it wasn't, etc. ? I read somewhere that computer security could be the culprit behind installation issues. Is there a list of preventive measures in Windows 11 that should be made before installing DX Lab? Windows security has several layers such as Virus protection, Firewall, App control. Which one should be opened? All of them? ? Any sage advice would be appreciated. ? ? Gabor - K7TES |

+ To what "deep computer technical issues" are you referring?
+ By default, the Launcher installs in
C:\DXLab + Where is the launcher installed on your system?
+ Please describe the installation errors.
+ Please describe the update errors.
+ If the update did not succeed, then you were running an early version of Commander released before the FT-991A was available. The FT-991A has long been supported.
+ To what does the first "it" in this sentence refer? + A stated in "Installing DXLab Applications on Microsoft Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, or Windows 11" in https://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/InstallWin7 + "Before running any DXLab application for the first time, configure your anti-malware and firewall applications to consider it "safe".

As life intervened, I was active for several years at a time, and inactive for decade or more in between. I was lucky to discover DXKeeper soon after getting back on the air in 2003. Over the years, it's been on 4-5 different Thinkpads, the earliest probably Win2000, now Win10. It's been one of the most trouble-free pieces of software I've used, and I've had only one serious issue in that time, which Dave quickly fixed for me. Based on my operating activities, I still have DXKeeper running 24/7 on that shack computer, and occasionally run Spot Collector looking for band-countries, but I've used all of the applications in the DXLab Suite when my operating activities needed their function. I'm an active contester, using the N1MM contest logger for contesting only, exporting each contest log to DXKeeper after the contest; it interfaces with my LOTW, eQSL, and ClubLog accounts, keeps track of the awards I'm interested in, and is very helpful in preparing submittals. And Dave's support here is spectacularly good, FAR, FAR better than business software that I paid several thousand dollars for. 73, Jim K9YC |

开云体育Dave, Thanks for responding. I am afraid this will be beyond my understanding and capabilities but I gave another try. I downloaded and installed Launcher successfully. I immediately added it to the firewall exclusion as the wiki described. Then, using Launcher I downloaded and installed Commander. The program said that it installed and immediately ran an update. I have v. 16.0.3 now. When I opened Commander it opened. I clicked on Config wanting to start there but it did not respond. After a while the computer said:
? When I started Commander again, the computer said:
? But Commander was not anywhere. I checked the Task Manager and it was not showing Commander running. ? Do I have to have my radio connected when initiating the software? ? Gabor – K7TES ? ? ? ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]>

After a while the computer said: CI-V Commander Window: Commander will terminate. + Commander only displays that message if it's being prevented by your Windows security settings from installing a component that it uses. + To work around this, 1. after Commander terminates, start Windows Explorer and navigate to your Commander folder, which by default is c:\DXLab\Commander 2. in your Commander folder, right-click the entry for CI-V Commander.exe and select Run as Administrator from the popup menu 3. after Commander starts, terminate it You should now be able to start Commander normally (without Administrator privileges) 73, Dave, AA6YQ |

Thanks, it worked but every time I start it asks me if I would allow program to make changes to my device? Is that normal? I made all exe files run as Administrator. Is that an overkill? I also added the CI-V Commander.exe as an exclusion under the firewall. But there are two other exe files (Commander587 and Commander1603). Should they be also added to the exclusion list? 73, Gabor K7TES -----Original Message-----

Thanks, it worked but every time I start it asks me if I would allow program to make changes to my device? Is that normal? + That's normal given your settings. Here's Perplexity's direction for stopping that: -------------- To stop Windows 11 from asking if you would allow a program to make changes to your device, you can adjust the User Account Control (UAC) settings: 1. Open the Start menu and type "User Account Control" in the search bar. 2. Click on "Change User Account Control settings" in the search results. 3. In the User Account Control Settings window, move the slider to the bottom position labeled "Never notify" 4. Click "OK" to save the changes. 5. You'll be prompted to confirm the action. Click "Yes" to proceed 6. Restart your computer for the changes to take effect By following these steps, Windows will no longer prompt you with the "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?" message. However, it's important to note that disabling UAC completely can pose security risks, as it removes a layer of protection against unauthorized changes to your system. ----------------- I made all exe files run as Administrator. Is that an overkill? + Yes: it's unnecessary. I suggest that you reverse those changes, as it could prevent your DXLab applications from interoperating with other applications you might want to utilize.. I also added the CI-V Commander.exe as an exclusion under the firewall. But there are two other exe files (Commander587 and Commander1603). Should they be also added to the exclusion list? + No. The only executable you're running is CI-V Commander.exe 73, Dave, AA6YQ |
Hello Gabor and Group,
I'm a long time user of DXLab software. Everything you need for DXing is here. Documentation is outstanding. If you can follow written instructions the software can improve your DXing in countless ways. No software I've used comes close to the quality of support Dave provides. Understanding and employing some features may take some effort. The rewards are worth the effort. Larry, K4KGG |

Thanks for the kind words. I intend to start using the software in stages, using only the essentials at first. Moving up in complexity will follow. However, the ever rising Windows issues drive me crazy. 73, Gabor, K7TES -----Original Message-----

However, the ever rising Windows issues drive me crazy. There should be no "Windows issues" if you follow the instructions as written. In particular, DXLab Suite should *NOT* be installed in C:\Program Files(x86) ... rather it should be installed in its own directory tree, typically C:\DXLab Suite. In addition, none of the DXLab Suite components should ever be configured to "Run as Administrator" by default as that will cause problems with the Windows User Account Control *and* problems with communication between the various DXLab Suite applications and cooperating applications. 73, ...
