Re: Adding portable or mobile to my Call
+ AA6YQ comments below
Can anyone point me to the proceduire to add /P and /M to my call in DXKeeper? I can set up the myQTH for any location that I may work from, and have submitted to LoTW for the TQSL certificates for the new call (KE5WCT/P AND KE5WCT/M). And I know that I will have estabilish a certificate for new locations for TQL. I have added the appropriate new log for QRZ ClubLog, and am working on ones for eQSL. In the meantime, I would like to how to create and use the new call's for making contacts and logging same. + When logging new QSOs, all you need do is make sure that the correct "Station Callsign" and "myQTH ID" are being recorded. + You can specify a default "Station callsign" in the upper-left corner of the Configuration window's Default tab; just remember to update it when you switch callsigns you're using over the air. + You can specify a default "MyQTH ID" in the "Log Settings" panel on the Configuration window's Log tab; just remember to update it when you switch the location from which you're making QSOs. + I suggest that you review + Before uploading/syncing with Club Log, specify the correct callsign on the "QSL Configuration" window's "Club Log" tab. + Before uploading/syncing with QRZ, select the correct "QRZ Logbook" on the "QSL Configuration" window's QRZ tab. 73, Dave, AA6YQ |

After a while the computer said: CI-V Commander Window: Commander will terminate. + Commander only displays that message if it's being prevented by your Windows security settings from installing a component that it uses. + To work around this, 1. after Commander terminates, start Windows Explorer and navigate to your Commander folder, which by default is c:\DXLab\Commander 2. in your Commander folder, right-click the entry for CI-V Commander.exe and select Run as Administrator from the popup menu 3. after Commander starts, terminate it You should now be able to start Commander normally (without Administrator privileges) 73, Dave, AA6YQ |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýDave, Thanks for responding. I am afraid this will be beyond my understanding and capabilities but I gave another try. I downloaded and installed Launcher successfully. I immediately added it to the firewall exclusion as the wiki described. Then, using Launcher I downloaded and installed Commander. The program said that it installed and immediately ran an update. I have v. 16.0.3 now. When I opened Commander it opened. I clicked on Config wanting to start there but it did not respond. After a while the computer said:

Ok, looks like I will have to break it down in small chucks as LOTW times out (no response within 60 seconds).?+ If DXKeeper can't access LoTW, either LoTW is down, or there's an internet access problem. + Yes: LoTW was inaccessible for nearly 2 months after the ARRL in ability to quickly recover from a ransomware attack in May (no immutable backups, no tested disaster recovery plan), and has been unusually unreliable since then, compared to its measured reliability from 2017 until early May 2024. ?
+ The date beneath the "Sync LotW QSLs" button is irrelevant, as that function is focused on confirmations. It's the "Sync LoTW QSOs" button that directs LoTW to report accepted QSOs since the date shown beneath that button. It's easier to use the Filter panel's LoTW button to select all of the unaccepted QSOs and then invoked "Update from LoTW" to update them. ? ? ? ?73, ?

Re: LotW Sent Stuck on "U"
Thank you Dave, I followed instructions and it updated all the U records.
?
About 25% of all of last year's QSOs are still in U status, and I will follow the same instructions. But, do you have any idea why records don't get update?
?
A little earlier today, before I posted my previous message, I reset the LOTW sync date and ran a "Sync LOTW QSLs" again, but that operation only update the QSO that were newly QSL'ed.

As life intervened, I was active for several years at a time, and inactive for decade or more in between. I was lucky to discover DXKeeper soon after getting back on the air in 2003. Over the years, it's been on 4-5 different Thinkpads, the earliest probably Win2000, now Win10. It's been one of the most trouble-free pieces of software I've used, and I've had only one serious issue in that time, which Dave quickly fixed for me. Based on my operating activities, I still have DXKeeper running 24/7 on that shack computer, and occasionally run Spot Collector looking for band-countries, but I've used all of the applications in the DXLab Suite when my operating activities needed their function. I'm an active contester, using the N1MM contest logger for contesting only, exporting each contest log to DXKeeper after the contest; it interfaces with my LOTW, eQSL, and ClubLog accounts, keeps track of the awards I'm interested in, and is very helpful in preparing submittals. And Dave's support here is spectacularly good, FAR, FAR better than business software that I paid several thousand dollars for. 73, Jim K9YC |

DXLab Worth; Installation Issues
Gabor Morocz
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi, ? I am a new would-be user of DXLab but after seeing all the deep computer technical issues listed here on this list and suffering failures on the first attempt to just install the software I wonder if it even worth the effort. I have a brand-new laptop with Win 11. The Launcher installed but was not listed in the DX Lab folder. Commander had installation errors, the update had errors. It did not even list my radio (FT-991A). Then, it said it was already running where it wasn't, etc. ? I read somewhere that computer security could be the culprit behind installation issues. Is there a list of preventive measures in Windows 11 that should be made before installing DX Lab? Windows security has several layers such as Virus protection, Firewall, App control. Which one should be opened? All of them? ? Any sage advice would be appreciated. ? ? Gabor - K7TES |

After reading and running a few queries, I have a question. Since the beginning of this year I have a total 468 QSO in DXKeeper log. I have received 279 confirmations, and I have 189 records remaining with "U" status in the LOTW Sent drop=down list. Is this the desired behavior? + No. 'U'' means "uploaded to LotW, but not yet reported as accepted by LoTW". + I suggest that you follow the instructions in /g/DXLab/message/227212 73, Dave, AA6YQ |

Will the status remain as U or should it be Y?

What is a hostile fork?
Open Source software development has many virtues: 1. it enables contributions - defect repairs and enhancements -? from multiple developers 2. it enables anyone to examine the source code to see how it works, identify and report defects, and suggest improvements 3. it lowers the acquisition cost to users The expectation is that modifications to an open source project will be contributed to that project, though such contributions may not be accepted. If the modifications are not accepted, they can still be used by the modification's developer(s) and their organization(s), who take responsibility for the modified project's maintenance. These developers have created a "fork" of the project source code, which they will use and maintain. If enough other developers and organizations learn about the fork and begin using it, the project's leaders may rethink their decision to reject the modifications they were offered and incorporate them into the project, effectively absorbing the fork. The more active forks, the more time the project's leaders must spend monitoring those forks (via their offered contributions) rather than moving the project forward. In contrast, if another set of developers simply grab an open source project's source code and without discussion begin making significant changes to create their own competitive project, then even if these changes are conveyed to the original project (as is often required by the license under which the source code is made open source), the fork is considered "hostile".? My understanding is that the developer of JS8 discussed his idea for an "interactive FT8" application with the WSJT-X development team leads, and it was agreed that a separate project made sense; thus JS8 is not a hostile fork. As Joe W4TV pointed out, the various development versions of WSJT-X aren't hostile forks either. Imagine working flat-out in your spare time for years as part of a team striving to create a new application for the amateur radio community only to discover that someone has taken your team's source code and used it to create a competitive project. Would you still be motivated to continue contributing to open source projects? Me neither. That's why hostile forks are bad for open source software development, and should be discouraged, in my opinion. ? ? ? ?73, ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Dave, AA6YQ |
