Re: Upgrade DX Keeper from 7.1.9 to 15.4.9

After clicking the update button a window comes up doing downloading.
After downloading then a message comes up
Can't replace c\DXLAB\DXKEEPER.EXE because it's either in use or write protected. DXKEEPER has not been updated.?
Then I Hit the OK button
Now dxkeeper won't run because DXKeeper.exe was removed. DXKeeper719.exe is still there.

Thanks for your help Dave

As for cleaners, almost none of it good. I think the registry is the biggest defect of windows design although I have no idea of how it should have been done.

was able to get all the other programs working.
is there a way to just uninstall and reinstall dx keeper with a newer version rather than 7.1.9 I tried registry cleaner

+ There is no need to "uninstall" DXKeeper in order to upgrade it.

+ Please describe what happens when you direct the Launcher to upgrade DXKeeper.

+ If you've used a Registry Cleaner, the integrity of Windows on your system may be damaged. There is no telling what those things do to the Windows Registry.

When I try to upgrade from 7.1.9 to 15.4.9 it does not update but tells me the file is in use or dxkeeper.exe is write protected. after I say ok the window closes and am not able to run dx keeper because the .exe file was deleted.
I have been trying to work through this problem including uninstalling the program and have not been able to correct the problem.
any help would be appreciated. I have been using dx keeper for quite some time.

Re: Infected file for Commander 14.5.5 update?

I should add to my instructions about how to remove a file from quarantine:

I'm no computer?expert. I found that this procedure?works for me. In the interests of avoiding any liability from someone who gets in a jam by not following the instructions precisely, or finds them inaccurate or unhelpful:

"While believed to be correct, this advice comes with no guarantees of any kind. You alone remain responsible for the security of information on your computer system".??

It's sad, when trying to help people that a statement like this has to be made, but....

What is the saying: YMMV? Use Windows 10 at your own risk? Take a file out of quarantine at your own risk?

By the time we are done with all this CMA stuff, we might as well turn all this ham radio equipment off and watch TV.?

Nevertheless, the advice to put in a disclaimer when trying to help anyone with any software is excellent advice!

Of course any DX Lab binary can be infected with malware.

+ Nowhere have I or anyone else claimed they cannot. However, there has been no such report of any such infection over the past 20
years; the installed base is just not large enough to attract attention from criminals.

I understand that, but the Download page that is behind the Download link on the home page does not directly lead you to links to
download the individual executables. It references Launcher as the starting point and advises to use that to install the other apps.

+ That's intentional. The Launcher should be used to install DXLab applications; it's automation eliminates user error.

+ "Downloading executables" is not the way to recover from an attack by your anti-malware applications. The correct procedure is
here:

Excluding a folder from a virus/ malware scan out of convenience is very bad advice.

+ It's only necessary if you insist on using a defective anti-malware application - which as you can see from the posts here over
the past week is a popular choice.

Of course any DX Lab binary can be infected with malware. Maybe it's clean
on the download side,
but a machine can be infected afterwards and that does not exclude DX Labs
binaries. This is why it
is such a bad idea to exclude folders.

That is a false positive caused by the malware program. It isn¡¯t there. In
your program, make the DXLabs folder and the WSJT folder (if you are using
it) as an exception. It works. I am running Win10 and I have the warnings
from Win10 Windows Security or Defender. I updated with no issue.

The problem is the MalWare program - not DXLabs.

Windows Defender is not playing badly if it¡¯s doing its job. If you have a better way to detect malware, Microsoft is reading the feedback from users.

+ An anti-malware application that reports large numbers of false positives will soon be discarded as "not useful". We saw this with static code analysis tools a decade ago.

+ The correct solution to malware is to properly harden the operating system. As I posted here earlier, the necessary principles were developed decades ago, and successfully employed in some commercial operating systems; just not Windows.

Re: Removing Dupes from a LARGE DXK Log (+96,000 Q's)

+ AA6YQ comments below

I'm trying to help a friend with a large 96,000 QSO DXK log that has somehow been largely duped. +45,000 dupes.

I tried having him run through the prescribed Wiki process and got to the point of hitting the CTRL-DELETE button.

Prior to that, he made a backup, set his sort to UTC, set the Duplicates Range to 0, and then hit the FILTER button.

After 3 hours of scanning, the process finished and he got an indication there were 45,000 or so Dupes.

I didn't see the exact message, as I was helping him remotely over the phone.

But after hitting the CTRL-Delete, and the Log Panel display going empty ,then hitting the remove filters "X" to bring up his QSO's
again, the dupes were still there?

+ No one has ever reported a failure of the "CTRL-Delete" operation.

+ I suggest that you have your friend backup his log immediately after the "Filter Duplicates" operation completes: Configuration
window, Log tab, Backup button. That will give you the option of trying again without repeating the multi-hour search for
duplicates.

Also, is there another, faster way to do this?

Like exporting to ADIF and reimporting with the "Check for Duplicates" option on.

+ There is no faster way to do this. Duplicate checking requires comparing each QSO to every other QSO in the log. With 90K QSOs,
that's 8.1 billion comparisons.
