Re: Windows 11 fiasco --I think I am going to wait
Thanks for the reply Dave......yeah not trying to do a support forum...no refund offered by the company strict policy....In any event I will buy another computer but not now. The Win 11 platform is not stable even when the guys have working computers! I read this forum and use it daily. I think I will stay with Win 10 and pay the fee while MS figures out how to write decent operating system software.

When you get to the point of needing to upgrade Windows it typically is on an old installation which will be carrying years of accumulated garbage and file/data fragmentation (like the Windows Registry). A disk format and install of the new OS is guaranteed to not be bringing over problems compared to doing an upgrade. I got the impression that this sounded like a computer issue, not an OpSys?issue. However, like many others who are working with Win 10 and DXLab I am looking at upgrading computers and systems to avoid the consequences of losing support.? (I lost a lot of my log with the end of XP due to a virus.)? So I am looking at moving to Win11 with my?DXLab intact.? Can you advise what we need to do or look out for in making that transition?but keeping our DXLab programs working correctly?? I know there are folks out there who have made the move to Win11 and have not reported any issues with DXLab operations.? I admit that this has got me concerned.? I'm not a computer guy (no pun intended) and would?really appreciate your comments and advice.+ I cannot provide advice without turning this into a Windows Support Forum, but I can share my experience: 1. I have no experience upgrading a PC from Windows 10 to Windows 11, as my Windows 11 systems were pre-installed on new hardware. Since I first began using Windows in 1985, I have always upgraded to a new version by copying all critical files to external storage media, erasing the contents of the C: drive, installing the new version of Windows, and then restoring all critical files from that external storage and re-installing my applications. I don't know if Microsoft's "Windows version upgrade" mechanism has improved to the point where it is trustworthy, and thus I defer to those here with this experience. Step-by-step instructions for DXLab applications are here: https://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/MovingBetweenPCs 2. Windows 11 version 23H2 is stable. I have not encountered problems when running Adobe, DXLab, Google, or Microsoft applications on this version. ?
3. I have Windows 11 configured to inform me when a new Windows Update is available, but to not automatically download and install it; Perplexity can provide step-by-step instructions for doing this.
4. When I am informed that a new Windows Update is available, I direct Perplexity to report any adverse side effects that have been reported; until there are no relevant problems with an update, I hold off. 5. None of the Security Intelligence Updates for Microsoft Defender Antivirus that I have applied have caused trouble. Perplexity is a free AI search engine that I have come to rely on for Windows management, and many other subjects, from home repairs to cosmology;? it cites its sources, which makes it easy to check the accuracy of its response and obtain additional information. I have no affiliation with the company. ? ? ? 73, ? ? ? ? ? ? Dave, AA6YQ ?

Get a new computer with Windows 11 if at all possible. I tend to favor the Ryzen 7 based "NUC" designs these days and have not had any issues with Windows 11 (on Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 based Windows 11 systems since Windows 11 was released). The Ryzen 7 systems can be found with 32 GB RAM and 500 GB/1TB SSD for less than $400 ... often as little as $300 (Amazon Prime). Once you have a new Windows 11 system and are comfortable that is is performing properly, then you can move DXLab Suite to the new system following the instructions here: <> If you follow those instructions to the letter, you should be able to pick up where you left off on the new computer. If anything should fail, you would still have the old system to fall back on. 73, ... Joe, W4TV On 2025-03-12 3:03 PM, Guy Carlsen via groups.io wrote:

Hello all...I purchased a Laptop Win11 computer as I was ready to transfer my DX labs and various other application for my shack computer. I spent a $1000 dollars for 32 gigs ram and 1TB SSD and found that the computer would not connect to the internet. The network adapter was not stable and would not allow connection for more than a minute....The computer slowed down to a crawl and would not turn off or restart. Then the BSOD would show up while restarting then the computer would reboot and connect for a minute and then lose all internet connectivity. My computer guys who are hams told me that it is systemic and wished me well.+ I don't want to turn this group into a Windows 11 support forum, but I wouldn't give up so quickly. Conclusion I think at this time with the plethora of issues with this operating system I am going to pay the, I hope, yearly fee for the Win10 support. I worked two weeks for nothing. I pulled the battery out of the Lap top and put it with the other dead computers. I can only hope the MS stabilizes this software or junks it like Win 8, but flogging a dead horse is a waste of time and has seriously impacted time on the air.?
?
I have also been told that a large number of hams are switching to Linux and abandoning MS.?
?
In conclusion I enjoy running DX Labs and have done so for 12 years. It is my sincere hope that MS stabilizes this software so that it is able to run DX Labs as well as my other Ham peripherals on a stable operating platform.
?
Thanks for the bandwith for my rant...I am out a grand and frustrated beyond belief.? BTW I am not feeling lucky.? ?Jim K5KND |

I did find a way to enable it with a YouTube video. I did a search and there are many videos on the subject. + I don't mean to sound like an advertisement for Perplexity - it's free - but I find it far superior to YouTube videos. It will provide a step-by-step procedure with references that you can save in your Windows11_Procedures folder, like what's appended below. 73, Dave, AA6YQ Enabling System Restore on Windows 11 involves a few straightforward steps. Here's how you can do it: ## Steps to Enable System Restore 1. **Access System Properties**: - Press `Win + X` and select **System** from the menu. - Alternatively, right-click on **This PC** in File Explorer and select **Properties**. 2. **Open Advanced System Settings**: - In the System window, click on **Advanced system settings** on the left sidebar or below "Device Specifications". 3. **Navigate to System Protection**: - In the System Properties window, go to the **System Protection** tab. 4. **Select the System Drive**: - Choose the drive where Windows is installed, usually labeled as **C:**. 5. **Configure System Restore**: - Click the **Configure** button. - In the next window, select **Turn on system protection**. - Adjust the maximum disk space allocated for restore points using the slider. A common setting is around 20% of the drive space. 6. **Create a Restore Point (Optional)**: - You can manually create a restore point by clicking the **Create** button in the System Properties window. This is a good practice before making significant changes to your system. ## Using System Restore If you need to restore your system to a previous state, follow these steps: 1. **Open System Restore**: - Use the keyboard shortcut `Win + R`, type `rstrui.exe`, and press Enter. - Alternatively, go to **Control Panel** > **Recovery** > **Open System Restore**. 2. **Select a Restore Point**: - Click **Next** to see a list of available restore points. - Choose the restore point from a time when your system was running smoothly. 3. **Confirm and Restore**: - Click **Next** and then **Finish** to confirm your selection. - Your computer will restart and begin the restoration process. System Restore is disabled by default on Windows 11, so it's essential to enable it to ensure you can recover from system issues by reverting to a previous stable state[1][2][6].
