I learned that using a NAS drive for backup is not a good strategy when my NAS drive failed. The PC board in the NAS drive chassis failed and the model NAS drive I had was no longer available from NetGear. That left me with 4 hard drives that presumably contained all my data but no way to access it.

NAS drives obviously have their place but given its single point failure mode and susceptibility to infection they should not be relied upon for backup. A rotation of air gapped thumb drives may not be as convenient but are certainly more robust means of backup.
