TR-4C INRAD #1901 & #1902

I have a TR-4Cw w/rit with the #1901 and #1902 filters, bringing the SSB bandwidth to 2.5KHz (vs the 2.1KHz stock).?

Also have a TR-4Cw (w/o rit) with stock SSB filters. I get *much better transmit audio reports on the unit with the wider bandwidth. Sure wish I could find another pair of these filters so the two transceivers could sound equivalent. I know INRAD discontinued them some time ago.

I know this is a *LONG SHOT*, but I don’t suppose anyone has any they’d be willing to sell?

Worth a try ?

Hi Sean,

About 5 years or so ago, I acquired a TR-4C and did the very same thing with it replacing the original filters with the INRAD #1901 & #1902 filters!

While I also get pretty good audio reports due to the slightly wider response,? The receive audio is much easier on the ears too!?
(I even have the INRAD AM filter for the TR-6)

I have been thinking about installing the Noble 2.8kHz filter in my R-4C to improve the received audio.

Since they make filters for the R-4C & TR-7 (even custom bandwidth)? if enough people showed interest, they might be willing to make filters for the TR-4 series of radios too!

Last week I had contacted Frank?WB2UJS at Noble over email.? He said that he does not may any filters or?accessories for the TR4's.? His advice was to find someone selling off one as parts from an old unit (soon we'll run out of old units -- hi hi).

It would be very nice to find a supply of these replacement filters!

An alternate way of getting a Drake transceiver with nice audio response is to use a TR-3.? Those old 4-pole filters have a more gradual slope in their passbands.

Of course, you give up sidetone on CW with this option.

I found the tube PTO to be stable, once the set warms up.

Yeah, there simply isn't enough demand for those filters.
If enough people were to ask it might change.?

There's not a lot of money in making modern "stuff" for old "stuff" unless there's a LOT of old stuff out there that people are willing to spend money on.!

The TR-3 filter were balanced while the TR-4 are the more common unbalanced in and out. 120 ohms if my memory is good. ?I updated my TR-4C to the wider filters.?

Yeah true. I emailed Frank at Noble Radio saying I’m interested. Offered my spare TR-4Cw for R&D. He’s quite busy, but yeah maybe if more folks expressed interest it might be worthwhile to him.

I'd definitely be a player for filters for my TR4cw/rit to increase bandwidth and improve already great receive audio!!

Just as a way to evaluate how much improvement one might gain by using a broader filter, has anyone tried just jumping the SSB filter with a 100 Ohm resistor? (Or, if you have an AM filter, try that.) I tried that once with a TR7 and I found that the audio was not THAT much improved by widening that IF filter.

I guess HiFi audio was not a priority for Drake (or Collins) radio designers.

The closest radio I have ever used with HiFi SSB was the RME 6900, That receiver really sounded exceptional, as pleasant as my FTDX-10 (by recollection only, since I have not had an RME 6900 in the shack for many years).

And a niche within a niche would be a 500 Hz CW filter. I was fortunate in that I was able to revive a broken narrow filter in a TR-4Cw.?

A kit to switch in a narrow filter for a regular TR-4 or TR-4C would be doable but, yeah, it’s a pipe dream. You could do it with an angle bracket, a relay and a switch.?

Here’s a link to my collection. I didn’t realize I hadn’t added in the filters. They are there now.

I can’t speak to the TR7, but I have 2 TR-4CWs (both use the same mic and Ron recently went through both).?

People comment on it when I’m on the one with the wider INRAD filters. Long time ham said it’s the best sounding Drake he’s heard. People also notice when I’m on the stock filters.?

I’m using a Kenwood MC-60 mic on both.

I increased the filter bandwidth on both my TR-4C and my S-Line. ?I feel it improved both TX and RX. ?On my IC-7610 TX is always 2.8 kHz and RX most of the time is either 2.8 or 2.4 kHz, and only rarely 2.1 kHz. ?This is subjective and others may disagree. Rob, NC0B?

Rob correct. Typical early SSB gear used 2.1 KC (Collins) or Drake at 2.3 KC, maybe 2.4 the memory is getting bad. The purpose of SSB is to allow 3 QSO's in one double sideband AM typical bandwidth, but I find that just a little wider is better which is easy to do today with the SDR gear.
