Just as a way to evaluate how much improvement one might gain by using a broader filter, has anyone tried just jumping the SSB filter with a 100 Ohm resistor? (Or, if you have an AM filter, try that.) I tried that once with a TR7 and I found that the audio was not THAT much improved by widening that IF filter.
I guess HiFi audio was not a priority for Drake (or Collins) radio designers.
The closest radio I have ever used with HiFi SSB was the RME 6900, That receiver really sounded exceptional, as pleasant as my FTDX-10 (by recollection only, since I have not had an RME 6900 in the shack for many years).

Since they make filters for the R-4C & TR-7 (even custom bandwidth)? if enough people showed interest, they might be willing to make filters for the TR-4 series of radios too!
I'd definitely be a player for filters for my TR4cw/rit to increase bandwidth and improve already great receive audio!!
