Drake T-4XB metal covers

Hello:

Can anyone tell me the best way to touch up a Drake T4XB metal top cover? I'm wondering how hard it is to get a new cover instead...

Thanks
Scott N1IA

The covers for the B Line and later have a special type of paint job that takes some work to dupicate convincingly.

There are some powder-coating shops that will give you a decent result.? That costs money but I've heard of some folks on this list getting this sort of work done and have been happy with it.

DIY.? This involves either touching-up small imperfections (I've used paint pens that are available at gun shops for very small touchup) or doing a sand and repaint.? This involves the use of a black spray paint (rattle-can) with satin finish, then an overspray of the same paint with a nozzle that has been drilled-out.? IIRC, I've used a 1/16" drill bet with a handheld pin vise to make a larger hole.? Test on a workpiece for practice before going to the covers.? I hold the can a couple of feet away to get the right spatter effect, then spray a last finish coat.

Swap in some covers that came off eBay or from a hamfest.

Good luck!

A colorimeter is a useful tool for this sort of work:

I used it to measure the cabinet of my Signal/One and order
touchup paint. The color match is flawless. It is, however
a little glossier than the original.
