1-A on eBay

The price is in the stratosphere for an ¡°as-is¡± example but perhaps someone could negotiate.?

I don¡¯t have the link because it¡¯s a pain to copy from my phone browser but there¡¯s only one of these available¡

The description says "I don't have the knowledge to test it" and "it looks like a nice clean unit"

The pictures of the inside look like it spent a long time in damp and dusty storage. Even looks like a smoker's film all over.

Run away from this one...

"don't have the knowledge to test" yet it looks like it's plugged in.

Don't see it lit up though.

For a 2-B, I would agree. For a 1-A, it¡¯s a matter of rarity. The outside looks decent and I¡¯ve seen worse copper. A very nice, working example of this MAY be worth that sort of coin. For a ¡°pig in a poke¡± like this one, $250 would be a good deal. It would be worth $400 cleaned up and working to spec.?

The main ¡°unobtanium¡± items in these are the knobs, cabinet and other trim items. Even the transformers can be worked out, if needed, though I¡¯m discovering that many 2-B transformers, etc. are the same but are marked differently.?

I just bought a NOS T6 (2-B designator) that is identical to the ¡°3K LPF¡±.?

Many Drake items in my collection Including the C-Line I bought new, TR-4C, TR-6, TC-2/6, SC-2/6, CC-1,? L-4B, all in very nice condition....

I don't have a 2-A/B/C (nice receivers) but don't have any room for them either!

I only live about 15 miles from Federal Way but that thing is so ugly, I wouldn't drive over there if he was "giving" it away!

That's why we are all different.

I believe the price is grossly high for condition.? However, a 1-A is sort of like the 1793 Chain Cent of Drake receivers.??

Better than some radios I have seen that have cleaned up well. I don't see any signs of rust on the front panel and the lettering looks pretty good. I'm a big fan of ebay sellers who do some cleanup on their offerings but in cases like this it is best not to try and risk damaging something.

I'm looking forward to getting the time to work on mine again. Mine's from late '57 and has no calibrator. As a subtype, it's the rarer of the two (though I would have preferred to have a later one both because of the calibrator and the fact that the documentation on the later ones is better!).

I'll take this opportunity to shamelessly request a VFO knob (the one that does the fine tuning). That dished shape is unique and I haven't found one yet.

As far as finding the 1-A's, you can always get lucky like I did. My friend had 3 of them and sold me the one I have for a damn good deal.

Re: the 1-A....

Keep in mind Country Joe went on the high side of $1000 US for his maybe 20 years ago.? They are a lot more rare now.? IIRC, the copper chassis on Joe's WAS exceptional.

Mine will leave in my estate sale and no sooner!? It sits next to a 1957 # 4xxx Toronto-built 75A-4 ......and makes Bob Drake smile and poke Art Collins in the side and say..."see what I did in less than 1/2 the space, and for less than 1/2 the $$$"!? I usually have both on at the same time and switch the antenna back and forth.

Now if I could just find a 1-AS at a local garage sale!

I'm in total agreement Jim. There's no doubt in my mind that a really nice 1-A would command a pretty high price!

And eBay is a great place to sell rare or "one-off" stuff that will always have a buyer willing to pay much more than others.?

I remember several years ago a Hallicrafters SX-115 actually selling for $3600 (closing price!!)??? I couldn't believe it!

This weekend, I heard a seller on the West Coast 40m Swap Net selling an SX-115 for $200 (not sure of the condition,? but the seller claimed it? to work) and no one even asked for info on it!

Ahh, the "ups and downs" of vintage radio stuff!

The down-side of it is, we'll spend pretty good money to get cool vintage stuff and when it's all over, if someone doesn't jump in and help to sell the "stuff" our "non-ham" kids will either "give" it away or haul it to a landfill!

Case in point: two weeks ago I landed a TR-7, PS-7, MS-7, and a
Drake desk might of unknown model number for CAD$250. That's about
$195 in real money.

How did this happen? The back story: the fellow I bought it from
didn't want it because it was too big for his desk and he preferred
his smaller more modern rig. He obviously did not know what he
had, and just wanted to get rid of it.

He bought it from the BCIT radio club (British Columbia Institute
of Technology). My guess is that the club shut down for a couple
of years because virus. When the new crop of 20-somethings arrived,
they likely looked at the radio and said "no SDR -- eeewww! no
touchscreen -- eewww! old -- eewww!!!" and sold it very cheap as
an old boat anchor. It had obviously been sitting on the shelf for
a long while. I had to have at it with the deoxit on the band
switch, the PBT switch, and the RV-7 connector to get it functioning
again. I still need to strip it down and give it a complete
scrubbing. But I got a complete working TR-7 (loaded with filters)
for a song.

They don't all wind up in the landfill :-) And sometimes I have
no qualms about taking advantage of people's lack of knowledge of
history.

At least it didn't go to an eBuy grifter who would immediately try
to resell it for $1200.

And yeah, I'm still trying to figure out how to rewrite my will so
that my stack of gear doesn't end up on eBuy ... (or in the landfill)

Why does it bother people when someone knows how to market something and makes a good profit? ?I don¡¯t understand the mindset.?

Having said that, such deals come up, even at hamfests. My first TR7 came from Shelby in 2019, for $350 and included a PS7 and the matching mic. Also an AUX-7 And fully-stuffed filter board. I was expecting to have to do some work on it but it fired right up and worked great!

I still have the filter board in my TR7A (I swapped because I liked the selection better) and am using the PS7 and mic. Oh ¡ª and (Grumble! Grumble!) sold the TR7 for $550. It was in really nice shape and was worth that price.?

So your the one who scooped the tr7 package. I tried to get that

I was really conflicted when I first saw the listing. $250?
Scam! Scam! Scam!

But I dug a bit deeper ... he put his name and call in the listing
and the info lined up with whst was in the ISED database. I sent
a message asking for more details and he offered to let me come
over with a wattmeter and whatever alse to test it. By that point
I was really unsure what to do. I didn't want to waffle for too
long because anyone could have hit the buy it now button and shut
me out. But then I figured "$250? What have I got to lose??"
(besides $250), so I snarfed it. Not only did I get the deal of
the century, it even came with free delivery!

An old salesman once said "don't charge a fair price, charge what the market will bear". If someone wants to spend that kind of money on a 1-A, that's fine. If no one bites the price will be reduced.

I have gotten most of my good deals locally and some are almost legendary. Minty one owner R7A for $450, gently used L4B offered to me for $450 by a local who knew that I like Drake, an estate purchase of a TR7 station that netted me an L7 for about $150 after I cleaned the rest up and re-sold it to another local. Picked up a lonely PS7 for $75 at a fest a couple years ago so now I have one for each of my TR7s. Another local who likes to deal in used radios offered me a nice NC300 for 40 bucks just because he wanted to get it gone. A list member sold me an R7 a few years back for $300 because no one else was interested. One of my TR7s also from a list member for $150 as a fixer-upper. I won't even mention my deal of the century on the pair of Alphas....

Ebay? What's that? :D

Nice! I put in a lowball bid in that range once on a TR7 fixer-upper from R&L Electronics. I was more trying to stir up some activity than anything else but I ended up buying it. There wasn't much wrong with it but it lacks the NB. Still pondering what to do with it but I have used it when both of the other rigs went down with issues. I seem to be hard on radios (and amps).

This. The market for cool vintage gear has certainly shifted, as experienced hams are moving on and/or dying off, as always... In the meantime, pricing on new/shiny/SDR flavored gear has gotten insanely cheap, relative to the capabilities and performance -- which has increased dramatically over the past ten years or so. Will there be a market for classic gear in the future? Of course--not unlike the classic car hobby.?

A few months back I posted my 1A for sale here, and all I heard was crickets. I'm pretty much over selling anything on eBay, so it also was marketed on Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist. I ultimately did a cash + trade for a Ten-Tec setup (locally-ish, with another member on this group) as a result of the Marketplace ad. The Ten-Tec setup, while it exceeded my expectations, will be hamfest fodder in the months ahead.
