2-NT T/R relay delay
Good day,
Got the novice station online and having some fun with 2C, 2NT, 2BQ, and HA5 VFO. Everything is running great including muting and spotting, but wanted to ask about the T/R delay. At full CCW the delay is about 500mS. If I advance the knob clockwise 10% or more, the relay remains closed after I finish keying. If I turn it back fully CCW it will release the relay and allow receive again. This amount of delay at CCW is just fine as-is, but wondering where to start regarding fine-tuning the delay response. Currently it's either ~500mS at full CCW, or doesn't release at all if advanced further with the knob. Definitely not full break-in speeds at all. Thank you Joe ki5o? |
Joe, although I do not own a 2-NT, the schematic shows R19 as a 15M potentiometer to adjust the delay. When fully CCW, the delay is et with a 100k to ground. If the pot is open near the full CCW end, you would see the action you described. I would check the delay pot for continuity between the two outer lugs on the pot and then between the center lug and the lug of the pot connected to the 100k. 73 ES GL, Bob K9JU

And, as always, look for bad solder joints or broken wires. Bob K9JU

Bob that is a great place to start. I had a bad potentiometer on the Q-multiplier that was a problem. I'll check it out. Any other thoughts are greatly appreciated? Joe ki5o? |
Bob thank you again for your thoughts. The potentiometer did fail completely so I'm on the hunt fo a 15M linear potentiometer. Best I've found so far is 5M from mouser who should be fine. If anyone out there has another option please let me know.
For now, I had a 10k pot extra from the 2BQ repair that I soldered in today. Relay is back to normal operation for now and not getting stuck. The delay is obviously very quick, essentially QSK between letters. Hope the 5M will be enough range to lengthen the delay a bit more. Joe ki5o? |
I was running into more problems this afternoon on the 2NT. Relay was not releasing. Checked the voltage to ensure the cutoff was happening. Slightly lifting on the arm stretched it back into the correct position and QSK and delay changes are better than ever. Looking like the relay was deformed a bit by previous owner pressi down on it trying to get it working.
I wonder if the previous owner sold it because of this problem? Anyhow I just wanted to document in case somebody else comes across this at another time. The two problems with inoperative 2NT delay were bad 15M potentiometer (thanks Bob!) and the relay arm needing slight adjustment. Joe ki5o? |
Good work getting it going Joe. The 2NT/2C really is a sweet combination John K5MO On Mon, Jan 22, 2024 at 2:58?PM Joe KI5O <ki5ojoe@...> wrote: I was running into more problems this afternoon on the 2NT. Relay was not releasing.
