RIFA Capacitors
Strangely enough, I had never heard anything about these components, when, yesterday I saw a reference to them on the Facebook VETE page and then something popping up here in the Drake reflector. Are these parts in the PS7?? The time period suggests that they could be.? I have not opened up my PS7 since I bought it and I have already a large number of projects to complete.? I guess that, since the TR7 does have a 120V buss in it for the fan that the TR7/TR7A could also have these capacitors inside them.? As luck would have it, the TR7A is up for a troubleshooting session as soon as I finish with my 2-B's, as ,y friend is waiting to get his TR7 back that I'll be board-swapping to tind that AGC gremlin that I've described before. Whilst my mind darts around, does anyone know if the L7 has any of these RIFA caps in it? 73, Steve Wedge, W1ES/4 Time flies like an arrow.? Fruit flies like a banana.

Line Filters

I took another look and those caps are not grounded but connected across LINE and NEUTRAL through low-value resistors. I presume one of those is the resistor to which you're referring. The caps leak for a while before blowing and that causes those resistors to overheat. I had that occur in one of my scopes. I'm not looking at the schematic of your scope so not sure what's causing 60V on your chassis. It can be caused by leaky power-line filters but, again, not sure what's in your scope. As I answered the previous?call for a TR3 assembly power supply:
I have an AC3 that I used with a TR3 many years ago.? I still?have both and they are on the?list for restoration.? From the looks of it, I already?changed one of the?capacitors?and it worked then, but I would suggest that a new kit be installed.? I also have an MS4 speaker and cabinet for it if you wish.? In the arrangement I had, I used a RV3 remote VFO and speaker power supply with it.? Was a lot of fun, then. I am going to the Dayton hamfest and can bring?it all with me, if you plan to be there; otherwise the shipping would be quite costly. So, what do you think?? If you can get one that is plug in working, you may wish to go with that instead of this.? I am sure that you know the AC4 will also work with the TR3, but same issue; it likely needs an upgrade as well. David Assaf III W5XU, VP8RXU ? Hi Jerry,*** Now aware. One exploded cap on the board. Luckily, I have the big service manual that was in the bag on top of the scope. Do these caps need to be anything special other than rated for 250V? There's also a popped resistor next to the popped cap. Broken in half - probably from the physical force of the cap exploding. This resistor is in series with the little transformer that produces the "line sync" voltage. But the popped cap doesn't explain the 60VAC on the chassis. Especially since it persists with the power switch off. The power switch disconnects BOTH legs of the AC input. Or it's supposed to :). With the power switch off, the only things left in the circuit are the EMI module and the fuse holder. My ohmmeter says that the EMI module is OK; but the ohmmeter doesn't output 125VAC. Actually, I have an old Heathkit capacitor checker that can output a lot of volts; maybe I'll drag that in from the shed. When I turn on the scope, it gives a failed self test - something about inadequate positive voltage. But then you cancel the self test, and it works normally. - Jerry, KF6VB |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI could also use a AC-3 or AC-4 for my TR-3. This is on my list to look for at Dayton. Dave KC3AM On 5/11/2023 6:52 PM, Jim Linsenbardt

This document is also conveniently located in the group file section and includes an additional circuit revision image in a single ZIP file.

In case you're not aware of it, the 2400-series power supplies have line-filtering RIFA caps between line and ground as well as neutral to ground. Those are notorious for burning out - sometimes causing a brief spike that would trip a GFCI. Once they burn out, though, they don't typically cause any more problems but it's good to replace them with modern/better components (I did). They're pretty easy to spot on the LVPS board. Good luck with it, Barry - N4BUQ ----- Original Message -----

Re: Drake Dial?
The arrow is with TR-3, at least. I also believe it was in early TR-4. The reason is that the 20m band goes ¡°backwards¡± from the other bands, so you can¡¯t use numbering around the skirt.? The ¡°B¡± period TR-4 had a similar skirt to the B Line but also no numbering. The gave you a 0 index mark and just lines, otherwise.? Interestingly, the skirt of the TR-6 has numbers but they run the reverse of the B Twins.? 73, Steve Wedge, W1ES/4 Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana. Yep ¡ª a cheap Chinese generator that I bought on Amazon. It is more*** I almost bought that one. Actually, an upgraded 80Mhz version with higher sample rate. And actually...I DID buy it. But I sent it back; didn't even open the box. Why? I really needed a frequency counter, and it had one built in; but perusing the user manual online, I discovered that the built-in frequency counter was not very sensitive. It required 2 volts p-p to count. Not nearly sensitive enough to align my TR7. Ebay yielded up an HP counter with 15mV sensitivity. I realized that the only reason I was going after that generator was that it's small. Not having a proper test bench with an equipment tower, I lusted after tiny instruments that could fit on the table along with whatever I was fixing. The solution? Went to the Home Depot yesterday and bought a sheet of 1/2 inch plywood. Cut out a upper shelf for my worktable. Ripped a 2x4 into a pair of 2x2's for stiffeners. Now I have a five-foot shelf, 16 inches wide ( the depth of my good scope ). It's about 20 inches above the table, giving me plenty of space to work. I plan to install lighting under the shelf. Already populated it. Got out the good signal generator ( Wavetek 3000 ) and the good scope, a dual lab supply, a decent HP frequency counter. Left the bench for a while to do other stuff. Came back to a smell of burned electronics and a popped GFCI. Huh? Apparently the good scope ( Tektronix 2445 ) had sat in the shed too long. A voltmeter between the scope and ground shows 60VAC. This continues with the power off and the fuse removed. Only thing left in circuit is the input EMI filter. Probably one of the caps shorted out. Luckily, I have the service manual. Tektronix P/N 119-1536-00. None to be had anywhere. HOWEVER, one website had a picture of it. It's made by TDK, their P/N ZUB2203-00. Woohoo! Those can be got! On order... There might be more. It's failing a self test that says "Positive Voltage too low". I'll worry about that after I install the new EMI filter. In the meantime, I can use my Rigol DSO to align the TR7. - Jerry, KF6VB |

OK - just checked?my TR-4, and it does?have an arrow!? This one is not the flat dial, but the beveled one like the B-line.? Gary's right though - no numbers on it. It's conceivable then to me that the earlier flat dial did have the arrow as well on the transceivers. Learn something new every day!? Trouble is I now forget way more things each day!
