Re: Drake Dial?

I looked this morning and my TR-4 has the arrowed dial skirt.

Thanks,

The arrow is with TR-3, at least. I also believe it was in early TR-4. The reason is that the 20m band goes ¡°backwards¡± from the other bands, so you can¡¯t use numbering around the skirt.?

The ¡°B¡± period TR-4 had a similar skirt to the B Line but also no numbering. The gave you a 0 index mark and just lines, otherwise.?

Interestingly, the skirt of the TR-6 has numbers but they run the reverse of the B Twins.?

RIFA Capacitors

Strangely enough, I had never heard anything about these components, when, yesterday I saw a reference to them on the Facebook VETE page and then something popping up here in the Drake reflector.

Are these parts in the PS7?? The time period suggests that they could be.? I have not opened up my PS7 since I bought it and I have already a large number of projects to complete.? I guess that, since the TR7 does have a 120V buss in it for the fan that the TR7/TR7A could also have these capacitors inside them.? As luck would have it, the TR7A is up for a troubleshooting session as soon as I finish with my 2-B's, as ,y friend is waiting to get his TR7 back that I'll be board-swapping to tind that AGC gremlin that I've described before.

Whilst my mind darts around, does anyone know if the L7 has any of these RIFA caps in it?

Line Filters

(Changing the subject line)

I took another look and those caps are not grounded but connected across LINE and NEUTRAL through low-value resistors. I presume one of those is the resistor to which you're referring. The caps leak for a while before blowing and that causes those resistors to overheat. I had that occur in one of my scopes.

I'm not looking at the schematic of your scope so not sure what's causing 60V on your chassis. It can be caused by leaky power-line filters but, again, not sure what's in your scope.

Thanks,
Barry - N4BUQ

With the power switch off, the only things left in the circuit

My ohmmeter says that the EMI module is OK; but the ohmmeter doesn't

can output a lot of volts; maybe I'll drag that in from the shed.

When I turn on the scope, it gives a failed self test - something about
inadequate positive voltage. But then you cancel the self test, and it
works normally.

I am going to the Dayton hamfest and can bring?it all with me, if you plan to be there; otherwise the shipping would be quite costly.

So, what do you think?? If you can get one that is plug in working, you may wish to go with that instead of this.?

Re: 2-B 50kHz Alignment Question

Hi Jerry,

In case you're not aware of it, the 2400-series power supplies have line-filtering RIFA caps between line and ground as well as neutral to ground. Those are notorious for burning out - sometimes causing a brief spike that would trip a GFCI. Once they burn out, though, they don't typically cause any more problems but it's good to replace them with modern/better components (I did). They're pretty easy to spot on the LVPS board.

Good luck with it,

nearly sensitive enough to align my TR7. Ebay yielded up an HP counter

I realized that the only reason I was going after that generator was
that it's small. Not having a proper test bench with an equipment

I lusted after tiny instruments that could fit on the table along with
whatever I was fixing.

The solution? Went to the Home Depot yesterday and bought a sheet of

Left

one of the caps shorted out.
Luckily, I have the service manual. Tektronix P/N 119-1536-00. None to
be had anywhere.
HOWEVER, one website had a picture of it. It's made by TDK, their P/N
ZUB2203-00. Woohoo!
Those can be got! On order... There might be more. It's failing a
self test that says "Positive Voltage
too low". I'll worry about that after I install the new EMI filter.

In the meantime, I can use my Rigol DSO to align the TR7.
