Re: B-line out of storage after 30 years

Harold

I am not an expert on these matters, but I'll just say what I have done.

The power?supply should?be OK so long as it is brought up slowly with a variac and loudspeaker in place.? I took 3 days to bring it up - 10 volts at a time..

I personally would not worry about the Rx tubes since they will come up gradually and the there will be several electrolytics in the Rx section.

But I am not expert at all at dealing with tubes not used for a long time.? There can be some issue with the cathodes and there is a process.? Maybe I have been lucky.

The Rx and Tx should be brought up separately - the Rx first.? But others might advise on the tubes, especially the PA tubes?and driver.? I am not familiar with the standard AC4 power supply, but the EHT from the doubler circuit may only be activated on Transmit, so the electrolytics on EHT may need a separate process.

I will watch these posts from more experienced people, since I bought a T4XB some years ago from Switzerland, and never switched on from new.

He made me a deal I couldn't refuse so he is shipping them to me next week or so.?? They were stored in his basement which he says is temperature controlled.? He was afraid to apply power to them so that is how they will come to me.

While I have some experience with older radios,? I have never had one that hasn't had power in 30 years.? So I am looking for advise on how to proceed once they arrive.? I was thinking I would start with the receiver.? I was thinking I might pull all the tubes and power it up for an initial test.? Then install the tubes and power it on again.? I plan on rebuilding the power supply but not sure which kit to get.? Should I give it and the transmitter a try before I rebuild it?

So I am basically looking for general advise on what to do with them.

Re: Large amount of Drake gear in latest Schulman web auction

I purchased a nice Collins KWM-2 in one of their recent auctions.? They sent an email asking you to notify them if you have some special shipping arrangement, otherwise if you are an out of state bidder like me, it goes pretty smooth.? They have the local UPS franchise pick up the items and the UPS store contacts you directly to give you a quote on packing and shipping and then you pay them directly.? I think it was around $120 to get the KWM-2 shipped to me in California and it was double boxed and arrived in perfect?condition.? The boxing was done so nicely that I saved all of the packing in my shed in case I need to ship one in the future.

Re: B-line out of storage after 30 years

Gregg Lebovitz

Hi Harold,

I was curious about the progress you made in bringing the B Twins back from storage. Did you replace the electrolytic caps with one of the upgrade kits? What issues have you run into since you started the project?

I wanted to share my recent experience and see if we had similar experience.

R-4B

The R-4B came back to life immediately after some inspection and cleaning. I cleaned the contacts in the band switch and used fader cleaner on some of the pots. The only issue I ran into was wonky behavior in the S meter. I eventually traced this to a bent pin in a 12AU6 vented it from being seated properly. I had to go through the alignment procedure for the S-meter which was very simple.

T-4XB

The T-4XB also came back to life after some inspection and cleaning. I still need to make another pass on the band switches as I have poor connection on some of the bands. 80 and 40 meters load up with no issue, but I discovered alignment issues on 15 and 20 meters. I don't remember having these issues 30 years ago when I last had QSOs with this rig. All the voltages check out with the PS-4 so, I am guessing the characteristics of the 6JB6s changed, but I really don't know the reason. The alignment procedure seems straight forward so I will tackle that next.

Re: Preamp

So is that a wet decal or did you use a separate adhesive? It certainly looks nice. I've known folks who can use a Leroy lettering tool to do things like that with ink but I don't have one of those (used one a LOT back in the day) and not sure if I would want to take that much time and effort anymore.

Thanks,
