They also used a filter to prevent 11 meter operation in some of the amps. I don't know if they were the earlier L7's or the later ones?

Roger,

To my knowledge Drake used 3 different schemes to lockout 10/11 meters from the CB crowd. ?The one you have sounds like the one where there is a round head screw with/without a nut, something like a cap screw, possibly with an Allen head. ?The best way to remove it, I've found, is to do it from the bottom. ? However, ?do be careful and stuff some painters tape, or kleenex, ?or something "below" where that screw/nut might fall. ?That way you can capture it before it gets into some known/unknown location that could cause further damage upon power up. ?For me, I've found that needle nose pliers worked well with high illumination.

But let's hear what the experts say.

Best of luck.

Drake R8 dim LCD

I have a R8 sitting on my desk I got from a local ham. He went through it and replaced several handfuls of capacitors. The encoder was shot so he machined a new coupling to fit an off the shelf new encoder. Radio works great and looks good.

However!!

The LCD is so dim, it’s hard to see it.

Found the usual Google hits about cleaning contacts and so on. Nothing worked

is there a fix for the dim display? (other than a new LCD)

I had one TR-4C that had a shorted silver mica capacitor in one of the circuits that gets selected for 40m only.? When it went, it took a resistor with it, which opened up.

I am going from memory and do not have a manual in front of me. So here goes.

The incoming signal to the R-4C is converted to the first IF of 5.645-MHz. In the second mixer, SSB and CW signals are converted to 5.695-MHz with the 50-kHz BFO signal.?

The signal passes through the selected the second IF filter to the third mixer. The oscillator for the third mixer is from an oscillator located under the filter shield located rear center, top side of the receiver.?

There is one oscillator with two crystals, one being 5.645-MHz that is used on SSB and CW to produce the 50-kHz third IF. The frequency of the other oscillator I forget but it converts AM signals at 5.645-MHz to 50-kHz.

To get the receiver 5.645-MHz oscillator on the same frequency as the signal on the "Carrier Osc" lead from the T-4XC, there is a variable capacitor for adjustment. It is under that shield on the same PC board with the oscillator and adjustment capacitors of the R-4C. Yes, the other variable capacitor is for the AM oscillator.?

Maybe someone can pipe in here with the capacitor designators.
