Re: CW Operation with T4XC & R4C

GM Gary,

I ran some test with the set up and it works very well.? Thank You

Thank you for your response...I really appreciate it. I will give it a try this morning..? you can't beat this Drake group for assistance.

I love the Drake gear but I gotta wonder why they went with this design for operating CW...why not just key a monitor oscillator and leave the transmitter freq alone..this is my opinion of course.

Thanks again Gary....

Bill,
The simple way is to leave your R-4C ON (as opposed to EXT MUTE).? Turn down the sidetone.
Set Tx to CW, Rx to LSB.
Hit the key.? You now hear your exact transmitted signal.? Note the tone, should be close (though not exact) 850Hz.
Now when you answer another station, tune him to that same frequency.. wha la!? You are on his exact freq or as close as your ear.

It might help to use your tightest filter or use a phone app to read the frequencies until you get used to it.? Also, if the other station
comes back on a slightly different frequency, do not retune him.? If his tone is too far from what you want to hear, go to SEPARATE mode.
850Hz is pretty high, especially with my now old ears so just using separate mode (except in contests) might be good.

CW Operation with T4XC & R4C

Gentlemen,

I have a classic T4XC & R4C set up that I could use some advice with operating CW. Has anyone written a procedure to set them up for CW operation? I have read the paragraph in the T4XC manual stating that the transmitter is about 850 hz below the receiver frequency. I would like to use the receiver as the controlling VFO. The rig works FB on SSB but again there isn't the offset to be concerned with. I just have not had luck netting the T4XC & R4C for CW operation successfully. I am chasing my tail.

I would appreciate any information and comments.

Re: TR7 with low power on 15 and 10 meter

OK, 90 watts is typical for 10m unless it has been repaired with more modern transistors. Sounds like you are on the right track.

Don't feel too bad, I have a Yaesu FT707 on the bench that has been driving me nuts. Maybe I'll tell you about it later. Today I am into the PA deck. What a nightmare. It makes me appreciate the Drake design in the TR7. At least you can work on it without disconnecting 47 different things to get to the screws...

Hehe... Hi Jim,

Yes, I did re-adjust the Pre-Driver gain pot. And the driver bias is there when in Tx.

The voltages are strange and about a possible out of band oscillation on 10m, when I connected the PA directly to the dummy load (through the wattmeter), I checked the signal with a tiny Spectrum Analyzer and I didn't notice anything weird, just the multiples. Power output increased just a little...

I concur that the "parent board", filters and associated wiring may be causing some of this. When I swap the boards from the "bad" rig to the "good" one, I get 90W on 10m, 100W on 15m. |

Thanks for your suggestions, Jim. This rig is behaving differently from any other I've had, so any help is welcome.

? ?I need a little help.? I misplaced the manual for my TR-6 and I need the part number for the 300 Hz CW filter.? ??

I tried on-line, however the manual. that I found listed the availability of the CW filter, but not the actual Drake part number.??

Any help would be appreciated

I guess I should have avoided confusion on my original?post. The memory of possibly?fixing the issue before with a hayseed capacitor?can was on a different set of twins. I honestly don't remember for sure what the?symptom?was that?led me to install the capacitor?can but it might have been?the issue I now?have with the hum. Thanks for the emails wondering what I meant. So any other thoughts on hum in the cw mode before it takes a trip to the Drake repair guru??

I'd appreciate?some advice

Shure 444 Desk Microphone (High Impedance)?

Original cable (70A253) was 2-conductor (black and white) shielded with plastic outer jacket,
7 feet (2.1 meters) in length.

For Replacement Straight Cables with Amateur Radio Desk Microphones,
I prefer to use Heil Wire (HW), 2-conductors within shield and 2-conductor UTP.

1.) Readily available in 10, 20, and 50 feet from Heil Sound or DX Engineering.

2.) Black and White conductors within Shield,
designated for Unbalanced or Balanced Microphone Elements.

3.) Red and Blue conductors (Unshielded Twisted Pair) perfect for
DC voltages (control) used by Transceivers for Push-to-Talk (PTT) function.

4.) The Wire Colors used Match usage by Many American microphones (1950s - 1970s)
used with Amateur Radios and Public Address Systems (Shure, Turner, EV)

Re: T-4XC generating unwanted tuned signal in R-4C

Oh boy, what an enthusiasm ?

Well, the culprit was a resistor of 270 Ohms connected to R59 (to the upper lead in the schematic) and the chassis. Hence pulling down the voltage of a.o. the cathode of the mixer V3 in stand-by (RX) mode, so activating it...
The mod also activated the Carrier Oscillator in AM and CW mode in stand-by mode.

No idea why someone put it there.

Anyway, first QSOs have been made successfully with good reports.

Re: T-4XC, R-4C, MS-4, MN-4, AC-4 Manuals

Matt,

I fully agree with Richard. I ordered these CDs for download last week as well and it sped up the problem finding in my T-4XC.

Send a mail to Carol (Garey K0OAH's XYL) and she will instruct how to order the various CD's.? Carol's mail address is: drake4@....

The website for the CDs is??to get a sneak preview of what you will get.? Defenitely worth the investment!
