On the heath? SB-221,? it too, also has the silly LP filter.? It also has only a 4 position bandswitch for both the kw tank output...and also the tuned input.? ?So no way to add 10m to it, unless you dumped the 15m position, and tapped it for 10m, then used correct values for a 10m tuned input.? ?When the filter is removed from the SB-221,? it screws up all the existing PI net tuned inputs.? Re: How to re-tune a TR 4Cw
I¡¯d say that 100 kHz is definitely a time to retune.? Normally, on 40, I¡¯d re-dip every 50 kHz, including the driver tuning.? 73, Steve Wedge, W1ES/4 Time flies like an arrow. HI Doug,
I just use my trusty (now old) iPhone 12 Mini.
A new software release automatically does the "photoshop" cut out of the background
automatically, I love that.? It isn't always able to but the R-4A photo worked pretty well.

How to re-tune a TR 4Cw
How does one re-tune a TR4Cw when moving to a new frequency? ?
There are a lot of videos and documents on tuning a TR4Cw on a specific frequency, but I have not seen any instructions on how to touch up the tuning when going from say 7.160 MHz to 7.258 MHz. ? I finally have my TR4Cw on-line and can tune it up on a frequency, but:? * ? ?How do I tell when I've moved too far from the initial frequency and need to retune? * ? ?How do I touch up the tuning? ?Certainly there has to be a better way than to start from scratch and tune up on the new frequency. Re: For Sale Beautiful 4A Line Sacramento, CA
Yeah, it's funny like that.? I just added a 7.5' long desk to fit more rigs.? A friend of mine gave me a Collins S Line that was non-functional and I have got them all working.? I also still have an 11-tube R-4A from that haul that needs an Oak switch and two TenTecs that need work (an Omni V and Omni VI).? Some of the money I'll make will just go into more electronic toys but my Triumph is starting to syphon some of the money (and time).? My goal this year for that is to get the new top installed and? get and install a new interior for it. (that's my "other" TR6). 73, Steve Wedge, W1ES/4 Time flies like an arrow.? Re: For Sale Beautiful 4A Line Sacramento, CA
Steve,
Put in the Sherwood product detector mod and I bet it will improve a lot.
It did to my R-4B which is just like your 11 tuber.
The 13 tube R-4A though still has slower nicer AVC and sounds better.

That's a nice-looking set!? I have an 11-tube set that's in that sort of shape, too. it does sound great -- even with the SS prod det. Steve Wedge, W1ES/4 Time flies like an arrow.? Fruit flies like a banana.

Re: Problem with carrier balance pot on T-4XC
The behaviour you describe is normal for that component.? The reduction drive will continue to attempt to drive the wiper, even after it has hit its hard stop.? I hope you can get it back together again. Also, be aware of what the procedure tells you as far as rotation of the main tuning? There are portions of the procedures where they direct you to go "up in frequency" and others where they give you clock directions (CW, CCW/ACW). Steve Wedge, W1ES/4 Time flies like an arrow.? Today, I attempted to do the filter match alignment (Sec 5.9 in the instruction manual). The instructions call out rotating this pot to max CCW. However, the shaft continuously rotates with no mechanical stop. I then noticed that the resistance value did not change as the shaft was rotated. I disassembled the pot to see what was wrong. The problem seems to be that the bearings don't rotate when the shaft rotates, and since the armature is connected to the shaft via the bearings, the resistance does not change. I have never seen a pot like this and wonder what it is about this circuit that required such an unusual pot? I assume that the preload needed to turn the bearings no longer exists, but I don't see any way to adjust that. Am I missing something? Can I just replace this pot with a standard 200-ohm pot (without the bearings)? |
Re: Drake T4XC and R4C
The procedures in the manuals call for each to be aligned without being connected to the other.? That is the basic alignment and, with the correct INJ cable, should work equally from the TX or RX as the frequency control.? If there are discrepancies, I would look at the cable first.? The cable material and length were chosen so that the TX and RX keep their alignment when connected together, so if you've done the alignment on both the TX and RX and the TX is giving you less sensitivity, that could indicate a bad cable. The cables were chosen for a value of capacitance and not for impedance.? Only the INJ cable on the B and earlier sets has this spec.? All other cables can be basic audio-quality cables -- including the RX ANT.? On the C Line, the CAR OSC cable is also made for RF but I'm not certain what its spec was or is.? I've used quality coax for that cable, as the appearance of the factory cables appears to be the same as the INJ cable. 73, Steve Wedge, W1ES/4 Time flies like an arrow.? Fruit flies like a banana.
