Re: Drake Transmitting Convertors
开云体育?Hi Peter, Ok, I just have to comment... I was going to when you said you were? going to build my cheap FS-4.. ?I might be able to actually push you over the edge.. The Drake’s were very stable by 1964 standards but today, they are really drift monsters.... What i am running here is an advanced? version I call my FS-5 with advanced? stability. If you build Bernie and my FS-4B hardware (with digital dial) you could have a Drake that is comparable to most new rigs in stability. Simple theory is, measure the PTO ?frequency and if it drifts, you offset the? band oscillator (Si5351 crystal based synthesizer) by the opposite amount to cancel the PTO drift. ?I am doing this now and it is terrific, turn the Drake on cold, tune in the net, then listen all day without? changing the PTO, it is crystal locked! I also have a mode I call channel lock... Most operation nowadays is on even KHz frequencies, so I only lock to the KHz. Instant exactly “on frequency”, no ?complaints from the new guys? Real easy tuning, my Kenwood can’t even do this! Parts cost can be as low as $11, I think. Plus, you have all bands with NO old drifted crystals needed. My FS-5 design is still being developed but if anyone wants something like the above, maybe I can get Bernie to help me release? it. 73, Gary WB6OGD? On Mar 27, 2021, at 2:45 PM, VE7PS <ve7ps@...:

Re: Drake Transmitting Convertors
开云体育Rick:I am not currently on the air with my TC-2/6 but I have in the past used them. While not too bad for casual VHF operating on CW/SSB, they are not stable enough as is for any of the digital modes.? I was getting drift complaints on occasion from the SSB guys at times.? My answer...."do you have big knob on the front of your radio for tuning?"? OK - not really....but I did think that!? Indeed some of that drift could be from the R-4/T-4 that was running the xverters at the time.? Need to check that out further one day. The receivers are not all that hot and would benefit from a good low noise preamp ahead of them.? I did some simple comparison testing a few years ago against my SSB Electronics xverters and they were not as sensitive, though I did not go as far as quantifying that difference.? I like to operate them just for fun, because I can.? I just wish I lived in an area that some VHF DX was possible...this after almost 40 years of VHF/UHF DX'ing when I Iived in EN86 and FN02.? I am almost surrounded by mountains where I am now in DN09, though I do have a good shot at the moon most of the time and am planning to get back into EME again. I won't be using the Drakes! I also have a P & H 6-150 100 watt 6 meter transmitting converter that is fun to play with too.? Brings back memories from using one of these in our 6m station at VE3ONT during the VHF contests in the mid-70's. 73 Peter VE7PS On 2021-03-27 2:30 p.m., Rick wrote:

Is there anyone out there in radio land using a TC-2 or TC-6 on the air? I have both? + the CC-1 convertor console and SC-2 // SC-6 receive converters. I am preparing to get it all on the air.?? I would like to compare notes on them and ? I'm planning to set up a TR-4C to use with both. 73/Rick W7IMM |

Gregg,
I really haven't had time to play with the transmitter yet or the power supply.? I did buy the Harbach kit for the power supply but haven't installed it yet.? I plan on firing up the power supply standalone first to see what it does before I put the kit in. As far as the receiver goes I just plugged it it and turned it on.? I was ready for fireworks and smoke but to my surprise it played like it was new.? What's really nice is the guy I bought this from was a school teacher at a high school.? He used it some as their club station.? For some reason he ordered 9 sets of matched finals and included them.? They are still wrapped as they came from Drake and in the shipping box they came in.? Then there were another 3 sets in regular tube boxes.? Those may be used but I'll take them.? I am set for life with finals. Harold W5ZZT |
Re: Large amount of Drake gear in latest Schulman web auction
Harold Rosee
I got a nice Drake 2C on the last auction.? I got a good price and when I got it I was surprised that it had the noise blanker and crystal calibrator that was not even mentioned.? It did cost a few dollars to get it here but the UPS stor packed it perfect.??
I also won a 3CX1000a tube from him and since it was small he sent it himself priority mail.? You can't beat his service. Harold W5ZZT |
Re: Need Crystal freq. for 28.5 mhz in TR4C
Just picked up a TR-4C that needs some re-calibration work, but it is operational.? Made a few contacts on 40 meters with it tonight.
I wouldn't mind finding a set of 42.5 Mhz xtal for 28.0 - 28.6 and the 43.6 Mhz xtal for 29.1-29.7 Mhz.? May as well get the optional crystals. It did come with the Noise Filter. Cowan N5QDH |
Re: Large amount of Drake gear in latest Schulman web auction
What you are missing is visibility. Schulman has at least a nationwide audience and his listings are detailed. Plus they do basic operational checks on all the gear and will answer questions, so you don't have the most of the issues that you do with unknown eBay sellers.

Re: Large amount of Drake gear in latest Schulman web auction
You might be surprised. At least in my area hams won't pay very much for used gear. Schulman's auctions bring respectable prices.

Re: WA8AJS, Jeff's Mod for TR7 to Lower Power Output
It seems technically sound but IMO it is a solution in search of a problem. For decades hams have just reduced output by turning the mic gain down and it works fine. A separate power level control can encourage overdriving of the low level stages if you are not careful with your settings. I considered it and chose to not.

开云体育I bought some Drake stuff a few years back and Dave made
arrangements with a friend traveling west to deliver stuff.? I
met
the guy in Nevada, about 60 miles from my house in CA and the
price was very, very reasonable.? He offered the service when I
called to make UPS arrangements. Richard K6VV

Re: I’ll leave this here...
Ah, so this was a test? :) How come no one has commented on the accuracy of the scale over the range vs. the original? The scale was calibrated to the non-linearity of the sensor.

That would save a lot?of issues but I am sure the cost of that service is not cheap. I guess that is why I am seeing more ham gear on craigs list?for really low prices and at the local Goodwill,Salvation?Army Store and other discount?stores. A family several years ago told the wife of a passing ham to just give all the ham gear to goodwill.? After filling many ham items in an outside goodwill bin which was later picked up she realized that probably was not the thing to do.? After talking to a ham who arranged other hams to stop buy she made over $6000 that day on the remaining items.? However some equipment?was missing control heads or radios or amplifiers and the heavy power supplies were left behind.? I know of a $5000 UHF Lunar 1KW amp that went to the goodwill?store here in Colorado.? I got the power supply as it was too heavy for her to pick up.? I saw that Lunar 1 kw amp at a Hamfest here in Colorado a year later who purchased it without the power supply in a Goodwill store on the other side of the state.? Myron KL7YY?
