Re: Drake Transmitting Convertors
Peter I can remember when I would CQ on 40 meters and tune at least +\- 25 kHz up and down for a response.? Frequency was not that important as long as inbounds.? Drift was not too important- just retune the RX. Walk around a bit.? Nowadays if you are 73 cycles off; oh boy! ? Bob KQ2Q

If you build Bernie and my FS-4B hardware (with digital dial) you could have a Drake that is comparable to most new rigs in stability. Parts cost can be as low as $11, I think. Plus, you have all bands with NO old drifted crystals needed.

Re: B-line out of storage after 30 years
Gregg,
I really haven't had time to play with the transmitter yet or the power supply.? I did buy the Harbach kit for the power supply but haven't installed it yet.? I plan on firing up the power supply standalone first to see what it does before I put the kit in.
As far as the receiver goes I just plugged it it and turned it on.? I was ready for fireworks and smoke but to my surprise it played like it was new.?
What's really nice is the guy I bought this from was a school teacher at a high school.? He used it some as their club station.? For some reason he ordered 9 sets of matched finals and included them.? They are still wrapped as they came from Drake and in the shipping box they came in.? Then there were another 3 sets in regular tube boxes.? Those may be used but I'll take them.? I am set for life with finals.

Just picked up a TR-4C that needs some re-calibration work, but it is operational.? Made a few contacts on 40 meters with it tonight.
I wouldn't mind finding a set of 42.5 Mhz xtal for 28.0 - 28.6 and the 43.6 Mhz xtal for 29.1-29.7 Mhz.? May as well get the optional crystals.
It did come with the Noise Filter.

What you are missing is visibility. Schulman has at least a nationwide audience and his listings are detailed. Plus they do basic operational checks on all the gear and will answer questions, so you don't have the most of the issues that you do with unknown eBay sellers. 73 -Jim NU0C On Fri, 26 Mar 2021 17:44:55 -0600 "Myron Babcock" <kl7yy.radio@...> wrote: So I guess you still have to pack and ship the radio's to Dave so he can auction them off and pack and ship them to the new owner. Re: WA8AJS, Jeff's Mod for TR7 to Lower Power Output
It seems technically sound but IMO it is a solution in search of a problem. For decades hams have just reduced output by turning the mic gain down and it works fine. A separate power level control can encourage overdriving of the low level stages if you are not careful with your settings. I considered it and chose to not. 73 -Jim NU0C On Fri, 26 Mar 2021 08:31:10 -0700 "ko4bg" <ko4bg1@...> wrote: Has Anyone ever tried this Mod and How well does it work? Woody

Greg: The TR-4C was originally supplied with a 43.0 Mhz xtal for that range. Back in the '70's there was far more activity above 28.5 than there is now.? The 42.5 Mhz xtal for 28.0 - 28.6 (+++) coverage was optional, as was the 43.6 Mhz xtal for 29.1-29.7 Mhz. Re: Large amount of Drake gear in latest Schulman web auction
That would save a lot?of issues but I am sure the cost of that service is not cheap. I guess that is why I am seeing more ham gear on craigs list?for really low prices and at the local Goodwill,Salvation?Army Store and other discount?stores. A family several years ago told the wife of a passing ham to just give all the ham gear to goodwill.? After filling many ham items in an outside goodwill bin which was later picked up she realized that probably was not the thing to do.? After talking to a ham who arranged other hams to stop buy she made over $6000 that day on the remaining items.? However some equipment?was missing control heads or radios or amplifiers and the heavy power supplies were left behind.? I know of a $5000 UHF Lunar 1KW amp that went to the goodwill?store here in Colorado.? I got the power supply as it was too heavy for her to pick up.? I saw that Lunar 1 kw amp at a Hamfest here in Colorado a year later who purchased it without the power supply in a Goodwill store on the other side of the state.?

So I guess you still have to pack and ship the radio's to Dave so he can auction them off and pack and ship them to the new owner.? ?No matter what you choose to use to sell you still have to pack and ship.? Am I missing something?by using Dave's Auction Service?? I have never tried to buy or sell on Dave's website.? Will be sure to list that as an option for whatever is left of my ham gear when I go to the Big Ham Shack in the Sky. ? Myron: Most of us old guys figure it is the fastest to sale and less lugging BA’s to the fedx store hi hi.. Dave’s site brings some top dollar these days and the nice thing he checks everything out and lists what is does and does not do. So you are not buying a hit or miss ebay items. 73 Tony WA4JQS ? This must be a last resort way of unloading years of boat anchor radio equipment.? Wouldn't think you would get as many dollars from the auction? process as you would through individual local or ham website sources.? What kind of fees are charging using the Schulman Auction??? ? Yep us old farts ! I two years ago had over 30 working radios and 20 parts radios ! I’m down to 3 radios !? Had to help a sk wife cleanup ! He had 200 items or more ! Don’t want my kids to go through that .? It woke me up!? I still have a room 18x18 full but most of it will be easy to get someone to take it . We actually have a few younger hams in our club now so I’d hope they would take it.? Yes our days are numbered just when we get old we realize they’re getting a few! ? Well guess us old farts. lol.got my ticket in 62 at age 15 now pushing 75.collected and restoration for the past 55 yrs.now getting time to let more go.? But just my guess.73.Tony wa4jqs? He has arrangements with a local shipping place (UPS??) and uses them. I would drop him a line to find out all the particulars. I am local so I just drive over!? Not that I buy much since I am already well stocked with the projects!? But, bottom line, check on the auction site and then contact Mr. Schulman with any further questions.?
