Peter I can remember when I would CQ on 40 meters and tune at least +\- 25 kHz up and down for a response.? Frequency was not that important as long as inbounds.? Drift was not too important- just retune the RX. Walk around a bit.? Nowadays if you are 73 cycles off; oh boy! ? Bob KQ2Q

I really haven't had time to play with the transmitter yet or the power supply.? I did buy the Harbach kit for the power supply but haven't installed it yet.? I plan on firing up the power supply standalone first to see what it does before I put the kit in.
As far as the receiver goes I just plugged it it and turned it on.? I was ready for fireworks and smoke but to my surprise it played like it was new.?
What's really nice is the guy I bought this from was a school teacher at a high school.? He used it some as their club station.? For some reason he ordered 9 sets of matched finals and included them.? They are still wrapped as they came from Drake and in the shipping box they came in.? Then there were another 3 sets in regular tube boxes.? Those may be used but I'll take them.? I am set for life with finals.

I got a nice Drake 2C on the last auction.? I got a good price and when I got it I was surprised that it had the noise blanker and crystal calibrator that was not even mentioned.? It did cost a few dollars to get it here but the UPS stor packed it perfect.??
I also won a 3CX1000a tube from him and since it was small he sent it himself priority mail.? You can't beat his service.

Just picked up a TR-4C that needs some re-calibration work, but it is operational.? Made a few contacts on 40 meters with it tonight.
I wouldn't mind finding a set of 42.5 Mhz xtal for 28.0 - 28.6 and the 43.6 Mhz xtal for 29.1-29.7 Mhz.? May as well get the optional crystals.
It did come with the Noise Filter.

What you are missing is visibility. Schulman has at least a nationwide audience and his listings are detailed. It seems technically sound but IMO it is a solution in search of a problem. For decades hams have just reduced output by turning the mic gain down and it works fine. A separate power level control can encourage overdriving of the low level stages if you are not careful with your settings. Greg: The TR-4C was originally supplied with a 43.0 Mhz xtal for that range. Back in the '70's there was far more activity above 28.5 than there is now.? The 42.5 Mhz xtal for 28.0 - 28.6 (+++) coverage was optional, as was the 43.6 Mhz xtal for 29.1-29.7 Mhz. I bought a used Drake R-4B out of a garage and a previous owner etched his callsign and social security number in the back of the radio. I was able to track him down and found out he had been a crew-member on the USS Pueblo when the North Koreans captured the ship.?

That would save a lot?of issues but I am sure the cost of that service is not cheap. I guess that is why I am seeing more ham gear on craigs list?for really low prices and at the local Goodwill,Salvation?Army Store and other discount?stores. A family several years ago told the wife of a passing ham to just give all the ham gear to goodwill.? After filling many ham items in an outside goodwill bin which was later picked up she realized that probably was not the thing to do.? After talking to a ham who arranged other hams to stop buy she made over $6000 that day on the remaining items.? I know of a $5000 UHF Lunar 1KW amp that went to the goodwill?store here in Colorado.? I got the power supply as it was too heavy for her to pick up.? I saw that Lunar 1 kw amp at a Hamfest here in Colorado a year later who purchased it without the power supply in a Goodwill store on the other side of the state.?
