I forgot, the AF Gain pot is also the power switch. It¡¯s been around 15 years since I last saw a TR-4, 4, 4C etc.
So obviously the issue lies in the AF stage.
It would be an interesting diagnostic to leave the AF Gain up quite a bit and depower the radio by unplugging the AC line cord to the power supply to see if this affects loudness or other characteristic of the noise.
