Working with the transmitter for the few days since posting this, I find that I need to make some clarification and provide an update.
?
The 5645 KHz signal I was transmitting and w/o any response from the VFO was not on all bands, just 40M.? So yes, I was tuning the oscillator.
I looked under the chassis at the part of the band switch that selects the crystal for ea band.? Well the contactor, wiper, or whatever it's called on the wafer switch was not making a connection to the tab going to the 18.1 MHz crystal for 40M (SEE ATTACHED PIC'S COMPARING 80M SW POSITION WITH 40M).? Adjusting the shaft going to that wafer would do no good because to align the contact with the 40M tab would mis-align the tabs for the other bands.??? So I decided to "beat the system" and place the 18.1 MHz crystal into one of the sockets for the accessory Xtals instead.? Well nothing worked and as unlikely as I thought it could be a bad crystal, I grabbed the 18.1 MHz crystal from my R4B, plugged it in and it solved the problem. ? So I'll plan to ignore the 40M position of the bandswitch and use position #1 of the Xtal switch instead.?
?
Steve, you were right - - fiddling with the mic plug finally made the right contact to the jack and the "going into transmit mode" problem is gone.
?
I need to replace the R4B's 18.1 crystal...are those available?
?
Thanks all for the interest and suggestions
