The desk in Ray's ad is a Design Industries "Diplomat" model - see pic from their catalog attached.? I truly do not know if Ray still has his or not but you can e-mail?him and ask..? Check his QRZ page. His address is listed on their.? Every once in a while I hear Ray on 40m talking to some of his old buddies like Mike Staal, K6MYC, of M Sqd and KLM antenna fame. Design Industries went out of business a long time ago.? I suspect most hams were too cheap to buy their desks.? The Diplomat was under $100 as I recall.? I have an "Ambassador" model here, with a Drake C-line/L-4B in it.? You can see this on my QRZ page.? It is available?for sale, with or without the C-line, but no shipping for obvious reasons, which limits the playing field I know.? Pick-up only!? I am 5 minutes from the US border 2-1/2 hrs drive north?of Spokane.? I have never known of another of these desks specifically?cut out for Drake rigs.? No problem taking it across the border as the value is under $2500 and we can prove it is all "Made in the USA". Collins used a pic of the Ambassador on one of their logbooks published?for ham use, and one of their catalogues depicted a "Senator" (a "two-rows-of-rigs" version of the Ambassador) on the front cover loaded up with S-line/KWM-2 radios. Collins and several ham craftsman have built their own versions of these desks as well.? Some of them are much more elaborate than mine. ? Easy fix.? Shoot the MODE switch with De-Oxit and clean the surfaces of the contacts on the switch rotor with a fiberglass pen.? Clean the brass, VFO lead screw along with the sliding ground return.? Added the mod of a short length of solder wick is soldered to the moving sliding rod contactor and then soldered to the steel, VFO mount.? Very lightly lubed the now clean of old dino grease, brass VFO lead screw with grease sold in tiny quantities by Panasonic.? A VERY light coast was used to lubricate the slide rails which the laser rode on in SC and DVD players.? It
is very slick!? Put some De-Oxit on the pins of the tube, and did some plug/un-plugs to clean the socket.? Finally, took a brass gun brush to the plug for the TR4-C, took the patena off then shot it with some De-Oxit, did more plug/un-plugs with it also to accomplish some level of cleaning to the socket contacts in the TR-4.
Works like a champ and at @ S/N 21,200 is the newest one on WB4HFN's list.
Even though I have a great deal of respect for Collins and am active in the CCA, have a special place for Drake.? The "C-Line" had just come out and all those pictures in the AES ads of? Ray Grenier enjoying his Drake gear snagged me.? The "C-line_ was the first "store bought"?
radio I bought as a new general then 2 weeks later, and Advanced.? As a novice, the rig was a used Heath HX-10 and Hammarlund HQ-180.
