That wasn't uncommon. They call it "RF Speech Processing" as opposed to audio processing which is usually just compression. This is exactly how the Drake SP75 works. There were a number of manufacturers who successfully used this scheme. I've got a very old Comdel that actually uses L/C filters. Never had it on the air, but someday...
