Yes, Willi switched to a larger LED after his initial run of kits in the original size. The one I got is original size, and I really prefer that to the larger size. Just my preference, to me the larger displays seem aesthetically out of balance with the rest of the radio. To use modern displays you either need to brew up your own board or buy the kit fro Willi. The original displays are pre-built modules that there is no direct equivalent to now.
