Re: Difference Between T-4X And The T-4XB

Hi Joe -

I've been doing this stuff for 50 years, and I've NEVER fallen into one like that! :-) Obviously I've picked the wrong old ladies to help!!

Other than a few cosmetic differences, black lettering about the "belt line", "PTO in use" light, dished dial skirt, and removal of the five kHz dial marks, they are essentially identical.

The only significant difference between the T-4X and the "B" is that the former has four pole crystal filters and the latter has six pole filters.

As a result, the T-4X is marginal at best on SSB for Carrier and unwanted sideband suppression, by today's standards. The only caveat I would suggest is to not drive an L-4B, (or any other,) linear with it on SSB. It's fine for CW, but for SSB I'd stick to barefoot operation, especially if you have any nearby Ham "friends"!

The transmitter is a T-4X....It doesn't have the 'moguled' knobs my B
has....but other than that, what IS the difference between the older
transmitter and the B??

BTW...the copper on this one is pristine, only one little blemish on the
T-4X and none on the R-4B.

I was helping an older lady (One of my wife's patients) move to an assisted
living facility...and she had this radio wrapped in big garbage bags in one
of closets. It belonged to her late husband who passed away 30 years ago.
I looked at the radio and told her she had a 'barn find' in her closet...I
told her I would try and sell it for her......she asked if I had any use for
it....get that? Use for it??!! I told her yes but it was worth some money
and she should try and sell it...she said, "No, just take it...thanks for
helping an old lady move."

How could I be so lucky a second time! My first B line came to me in
pristine condition, cosmetically, as well. Oh well, I didn't win anything
at our Emcomm raffle here in Reno last week, so this was my raffle prize.

Ahem....Still looking for an L-4B.......thank you very much!
