It made me wonder in what era birthdays started to be celebrated.... The date below doesn't really tie in with the article, but perhaps it only started then with the rich and educated and it took many years for the majority of the population to join in.
Google tells me that:
"The birthday celebrations we recognize today emerged primarily in 18th-century Germany. The tradition of birthday cakes with candles is believed to have originated from this period, with the candles symbolizing the light of life."
