SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON-Day 133
开云体育SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON? Loser of Two Worlds ? A? scoffer is liable to suffer retribution in this world for his sinful behavior. As the Talmud states (Avodah Zara 18b): “Whoever scoffs will have affliction visited upon him, as it is written, ‘And now, do not scoff, lest your retribution intensify’ (Yeshayahu 28:22). Said Rava to the rabbis, ‘I ask you not to engage in scoffing, so that affliction not come upon you.’ ” The Talmud further states (ibid.) that scoffing causes one to be denied his material needs. ? Scoffers bring punishment upon the entire world, as the Talmud (ibid.) states, “Whoever scoffs brings about destruction in the world.’’ It is forbidden even to sit in the company of scoffers, as it is written, “Praiseworthy is the man ... that sat not in the company of scoffers” (Tehillim 1:1). ? The Vilna Gaon writes in his famous letter: ? To the verse, “All man’s toil is for his mouth” (Koheles 6:6), the Sages comment (Midrash Koheles ibid.) that all the mitzvos and Torah study of a person are not sufficient to negate that which he utters [sinfully] with his mouth. They further state: “Which craft should man pursue in this world? He should strive to emulate a mute [and avoid evil talk] (Chullin 89a), and press his lips together like two millstones [which grind against one another]”. ? Therefore, one must distance oneself from scoffers so that he will not learn from their ways; rather, he should sit where Torah is being spoken. Praiseworthy will he be, in this world and in the World to Come. ? |

Shmirat Haloshon-Day 132
开云体育SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON? Scoffing ? One of the root causes of loshon hora is scoffing. Some people are accustomed to scoffing at anything, and attach themselves to people who are of their own kind. It is natural for such people to scoff at others who are outside their circle and to speak degradingly of them. Therefore, one who seeks to cleanse his soul should ponder the terrible sin of such behavior. ? Our Sages teach that scoffers are one of four groups that will not merit to greet the Divine Presence (Sotah 42a). In addition to his own sins, a scoffer is guilty of causing others to join him in his ridicule. It is well known that to cause others to sin is an extremely grave offense, and prevents the perpetrator from being granted Heavenly assistance to repent (Avos?5:18). ? Aside from all of the above, to idle one’s time away, even not in a sinful way, is to waste precious time that could be used for studying Torah and accruing reward for the World to Come. According to one Talmudic opinion, the verse “... for he scorned the word of Hashem” (Bamidbar?15:31) applies to one who squanders the opportunity to study Torah. ? How ashamed, then, should one be to have spent hour upon hour in the company of scoffers! Moreover, were they to restrain themselves from speaking the forbidden, they would thereby merit eternal life, for, as the Midrash states, for each moment that a person refrains from speaking the forbidden, he merits a hidden light that no angel can fathom. |

Segula of Parshat HaMan for Parnassah -Tuesday daytime
开云体育Today is Yom Shlishi of Parshat Beshalach, a day in which there is a
Segula to daven for Parnasa.
The Segula, which comes to us from the Chassidic Rebbe, Reb Menachem Mendel of Riminov [a disciple of the Rebbe Reb Elimelech of Lizhensk], is to read "Parshat HaMan","Shnayim Mikra v'Echad Targum," reading the Hebrew verses twice and the Aramaic translation of Onkelos once. Parshat HaMan can be found in Shemot Chapter 16, verses 4 - 36 [the end of the chapter], or for those who prefer, from the middle of Chamishi - the Fifth Aliya - to the end of Shishi [the Sixth]. There are two methods of reading "Shnayim Mikra v'Echad Targum": One is to read through the entire portion, with the Hebrew once, then twice, and then read through the entire Targum. The other method is to read each verse at a time, twice in the Hebrew and once in the Aramaic, before going on to the next verse. There is also a custom to light a candle in his memory. You don't have to light it specifically on his yahrzeit - it can be done at any time. If you light a candle in his memory and have in mind a prayer, his zechut will help with that tefila.

SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON - Day 130
开云体育SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON? Like from a Fire ? Anyone of even minimal intelligence should understand that one should flee the trait of anger like one would flee a fire. He should realize that without a doubt a tendency toward anger will ensure his condemnation on the Day of Judgment when he departs this world. ? One whose sins exceed his merits is deemed a rasha, wicked person, and as our Sages state, “Whoever is given to anger surely has more sins than merits, as it is written (Mishlei 29:22), ‘And the master of anger has much sin (pesha)” (Nedarim 22b). In Scripture, this term for sin denotes willful sin with the intention of rebelling against and angering God. The term is used here regarding the man of anger, because in the heat of rage one has total disregard for Torah and mitzvos. Thus do the Sages state, “Whoever is given to anger has no regard even for the Divine Presence” (ibid.); and, “Whoever rips his clothing, smashes his vessels or disperses his money in a fit of rage should be in your eyes like an idol worshiper ... Which verse alludes to this? ‘There shall be no strange god within you’ (Tehillim 81:10). Which ‘strange god’ is within the body of man? The evil trait of anger” (Shabbos 105b). |

SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON-Day 129
开云体育SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON? Root Causes ? Verbal remembrance of Miriam’s affliction will inspire a person to refrain from loshon hora only if he is not in the habit of transgressing this bitter sin. However, one who has developed such a habit, and thus finds it difficult to refrain from speaking and listening to forbidden talk, must deal with his spiritual malady as he would treat a physical one. To cure a physical condition, one must determine the condition’s source and then administer the appropriate medication. Similarly, when one is afflicted with a penchant for a particular form of negative behavior, he must determine its root cause and eradicate it. ? The root causes of loshon hora are alluded to in the Hebrew words for All Gehinnom. These words are an acronym for: anger; scoffing; arrogance; despair; without rule or regulation; negativity; and saying it is permissible. We shall elaborate upon each of these traits. ? There are those whose frequent transgression of the laws of forbidden speech is rooted in the trait of anger. These people are by nature quick-tempered, and their anger flares at the slightest provocation. In a fit of anger, they find it impossible to control their tongues, speaking whatever comes to mind. There is no hope for such people to develop the quality of shmiras haloshon unless they learn to overcome their tendency toward anger. ? |
