Re: D-Rats setup with ID-1
Before? you try anything with the ID-1 (assuming that you are trying in DD mode) hook the two computers to each other with a hub and make them work. His will
probably save hours or days of misguidance. If the two computers can talk to each other through a simple switch, then replacing the switch with the ID-1s should be transparent.
?
Make sure that you aren¡¯t using a switch that provides DHCP.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I was able to finally able to do a D-Rats RF connection with Carlos, W7Ql using our Icom ID-1 radios. We were able to work together and get it to work. I only wish I could say what the
final fix was, other that doing it over and over again and rebooting over and over again. Now our big quest is to be able to do DD networking to drag and drop files from one computer to the other. Thanks to Arnold and everyone else for your contributions.

Greetings everyone I recently got an IC ID-1 radio and would like to setup D-Rats to run with it. I have read several resources on how to set the radio up and configure D-Rats. I do have some questions for settings that never seem to get mentioned.
1. Do I set the radio mode to DV or DD? 2. Do I need to shut the laptop radio interface software down and use the RC24 while running D-Rats? I assume that is what is meant in the D-Rats instructions when it states "Cannot use PC application" 3. Do I need to register my ID-1 radio on the gateway or is the original registration enough?

Use of D-STAR for Major ARES Exercise on Saturday
Interesting use of D-STAR for ARES Exercise! ?
?
----- Forwarded Message ----- From: wb4qdx To: ga_dstar@... Sent: Thursday, October 4, 2012 3:18 PM Subject: [ga_dstar] Major ARES exercise on Saturday
This Saturday, October 6, ARES will conduct its annual Simulated Emergency Test.
Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee will be participating on a multi-state level and may use D-STAR for intra and interstate communications during the exercise.
The exercise hours will be from 0800 until late afternoon Eastern Time.
REF030 has been designated for use during the exercise. Most Georgia repeaters will be connected to REF030C for voice traffic, REF030D will be used for D-RATS data traffic.
All stations not participating in the exercise should allow use on Saturday for the SET. Any repeater interfering with the exercise will be disconnected from the reflector.
Reflector 30 is located in Atlanta, Georgia and has been funded through emergency communications grants.
Its primary purpose is to support emergency operations and training in Georgia. However, during non-emergency periods, all repeaters and users are welcome to link to reflector 30. When emergency events or training is conducted, linking may be restricted to Georgia repeaters and users or other supporting areas.
Please respect any Georgia EmComm activities that occur on the reflector.

Re: FAA Spectrum Management Rep to Discuss 23cm on Net Thursday
Here are notes that I took from the Papa System round table with guest Sidney Bradfield, W4LUU, FAA Radio Frequency Manager.
FAA 23cm band long range (250 miles) radar is being upgraded to solid-state equipment with lower transmit power and more sensitive (20 to 40 db more) receivers, replacing existing tube-type high maintenance cost radars. 23cm ham transmitters can swamp the input of these new radar receivers. The radar receiver pass band is 10MHz wide. These problems were a surprise to the FAA because the old radars were compatible with existing ham repeaters. The higher receiver sensitivity is the big problem because they are hearing things now that they never heard before. Their pre-installation engineering spectrum studies do not consider secondary usage. They instead assume that a secondary user's frequency can be changed. FAA radars can be located anywhere from 1215-1400 MHz. They are usually located far from populated areas, but exceptions exist, such as in Southern California.
They use direction finding to locate interfering sources, which can also turn out to be unlicensed devices such as wireless cameras, personal computers, etc. ARRL, through frequency coordinators, is facilitating relocating repeater frequencies that interfere with these new radar installations. Hams have generally been cooperative and many problems have been successfully resolved. Sidney focused on west coast problems because that is where the first radar installations were made. ARRL now has the schedule and other info about rolling out these installations in other parts of the country. Release of this information is constrained for security reasons, and the ARRL was given the information but can only provide it on a "need to know" basis.

Sydney Bradfield W4LUU, FAA Radio Frequency Manager, will appear as a guest speaker/ham on the PAPA System Thursday Night D-STAR Round Table at 8:00 pm DST (0300Z) on Reflector 12C, this Thursday September 27.
Sydney W4LUU is the chief engineer in FAA's Spectrum Management Division. He will speak about 23cm amateur radio interference with FAA air route surveillance radar, other RFI issues, how they track down interference sources, his agency's relationships with the FCC and ARRL, and will take questions.
Sydney provides a unique insight into the conflict between amateur radio's secondary use of the 23cm band and interference problems that have resulted in 23cm repeaters being turned off or changing frequencies.
If you operate digital in the 23cm band, this net is a must. Know the future of the 23cm spectrum as FAA and FCC agencies clamp down on certain ham operations as surveillance radar use modernises and expands.

Re: Need Suggesions for Getting ID-1 On the Air with Mag Mount Antenna
Simply plug it all in and switch it on, you can operate analogue and D-Star
in simplex mode, add your callsign,? RPT 1 and 2 for any 23cms voice
repeaters locally and use just like 2 or 440.
?
Data¡¯s a bit different but there is plenty of information available on this

Purpose
To allow the worldwide D-STAR community to come
together for the annual D-STAR QSO PARTY.
Prizes
The goal of the D-STAR QSO PARTY is to communicate
through as many D-STAR repeaters as possible throughout the world. All operators
who submit an approved log will be eligible for the prize draw. Seven (7)
winners will be randomly selected to each win a prize. The more D-STAR QSO's you
make, the more chances you have to win (up to a maximum of four prize draw
tickets). Please refer to the entry multipliers below. To qualify for a prize
draw ticket, you need make a contact through at least one repeater in your own
country. If you contact amateurs in more than 5 foreign countries, you will
qualify for two tickets to win a prize. If you contact amateurs in more than
10 foreign countries, you will qualify for three tickets to win a prize. If
you contact amateurs in more than 20 foreign countries, you will qualify for
four tickets to win a prize.
How the above "prize draw ticket"
system will work
The name and/or call sign of each entrant into the
D-STAR QSO PARTY will be collated and included in the prize draw. In this case
each entrant will be eligible for one prize draw ticket in the draw. As per
the explanation above, the number of prize draw tickets is multiplied depending
on the number of countries outside your own that you receive a valid QSO from
during the competition period. Winners can receive only one prize. Therefore,
in the case where a winner's name/call sign is drawn again, that person will not
receive another radio/calendar as a prize.

I'm wondering if someone could report what they know about the status of our D-Star repeaters that we have located in and around the salt lake valley. Are there any repeaters that have a working Gateway, and are there any repeaters
that are working just as repeaters without a Gateway. Would it be possible to have a group or club maintenance fee to help support the Gateways?

I was aware of the other repeaters surrounding Salt Lake city but was hoping that the persons involved with these repeaters would report some of the problems they were having to get Gateways set-up.
Thanks

At the present time I do not think there are any D-Star repeaters in the SLC area on the Gateway.
There is one at the KSL site that they are working on getting internet to it and a couple of other repeaters in the area that are coming on line soon.
As of right now the only ones that have Gateway connectivity are located in the Logan and Cedar City area. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Re: File - D-STAR 23cm Monthly Announcement.txt
Ok.... Here is my post. Has anyone had any experience in setting up two Icom DD boxes, one around 1250.00 MHz and one around 1298.00 Mhz and then passing the data between them through the gateway server? If my thinking is correct you should be able to build a true data repeater rather than just an access point system. Thanks for participating in the D-STAR 23cm group.
If you're using or experimenting with D-STAR on 23m currently let the group know how you're using D-STAR by sending a message to the group, adding a Link in the Links area and/or Uploading a File to the Files area.
Messages & articles about how you currently or plan to use the high-speed data capability would be of particualar interest to group memebers.
By the way, there are already dozens of messages in the group's message log and numerous files & links in the Files & Links areas about all aspects of D-STAR.
Please also let other D-STAR users, including those don't yet use D-STAR on 23cm, who aren't members of the group know about the group.
