Thanks all for the input. Just a quick note here, with more research
on your inputs about the bracket tomorrow.
After spending 15 minutes at the local Ace Hardware standing in front
of the small Metric Machine Screws drawers with the ID-1 radio in my
hand, I was forced to conclude that the bracket screw threads ARE "M4"
after all. M5 was obviously too large, and M3 pushed right through
without engaging the threads.
My second conclusion was that the M4 threads on the radio body were
simply very shallow, as in 2 or 3 threads at most. I couldn't believe
it either - I tried different M4 screws, in all four of the radio's
screw threads. In each case, I could get a few threads in, cleanly,
but no more than that. Even with just those few threads, the screw
seats solidly, and I'll be able to install the first radio onto the
one bracket I currently have (with the help of a washer). I wouldn't
do this if I was going to use it mobile, but I'm mounting the radio to
the bracket, and the bracket to base, along with the control head for
fixed use in my shack. I'll include a photo when I complete it in the
next few days, now that the screw size is "sorted out".
For a radio that was that expensive, 20 years ago, I'm surprised at
this lack of attention to detail on the part of Icom.
Thanks,
Steve N8GNJ
