Date: 20/09 There were many things Snicks found odd and sometimes unsettling about his new home, chiefly, the sincere care people had for each other. The first time his neighbour had brought him a casserole (honest to heaven real lamb casserole), introduced herself and asked him how he was settling in ¨C well, Snicks regarded her with suspicion, answered her in monosyllabic and refused to eat the casserole for fear of poison. Then it happened again, and again, and again. Sometimes the same people, sometimes different people, and eventually he realized they were actually sincere in their concerns and genuine in their desire to get to know him. it was incredibly unsettling. In the two years since his arrival he has accepted their genuine interest, even reciprocated it, but it never stopped his first instinct to be doubt and fear. He rubbed his hands vigorously against his jeans as he psyched himself up for entering the general store; Sinjin¡¯s aggressive adoption tactics were starting to frighten him a little, he knew it came from a good place, but if he had to decline one more dinner invitation he was going to scream. It was draining being cornered and showered with affection. Taking a deep breath he prayed to the sky that Aidan was behind the counter, or maybe one of their on and off again workers. There was a swooshing noise and a burst of hot air as the door opened, letting him into the bright and colourfully arranged store. Hunching into his jacket to make himself appear smaller he crept around a few of the aisles, hoping to catch a glimpse of the counter. He turned a corner. His gaze wasn¡¯t focused on where he was going but out of his peripheral version he spied movement. Stopping himself short he started to fall over his toes, catching himself at the last minute and stopping himself from tumbling into the person in front of him. ? ¡°Shit! Sorry,¡± he muttered, eyes on the ground, his heart rate already beginning to sky rocket.? |

Mirriam slowly rambled down that very aisle, a wicker basket in hand, her gaze on the variety of items rather than on the approaching individual. She was wearing a dress down to her ankles, an older one for everyday wear but gaudy with a bright flowery pattern over the dark blue colored fabric. As nice as many women might consider this garment, she saved her finest ones for when she was at work at the Paradise. Today she was also sans makeup and eye liner, that too was a key part of her work persona for afterall she was an entertainer, a singer and dancer at that saloon.
There was a quick flash of sudden movement directly at her which she only detected at the very last second thru her peripheral vision and stopped instantly. Startled her hazel eyes were drawn to the man now. Definitely not anyone she knew by name or frequent association but he just might have been an occasional customer at the Paradise, there were so many after all. He seemed as spooked by the near collision as she was so obviously an accidental thing, he wasn't looking for trouble. "No problem. No harm done," Mirriam flashed one of her warm smiles, the kind that the customers at Paradise were used to seeing. It was so sincere, even if it really wasn't, that was part of her job to charm people and make each one of them think they were something special. It kept the customers coming back. It was as much performance as her musical numbers or dance steps. Tag: Snicks |
Date:?20/09 Snicks gave a quick nod of acknowledgement then scurried past her, keeping his eyes firmly on the ground. The voice wasn¡¯t one he recognised and he was in no fit state to chat to strangers. He could feel his heart pounding in his ears, his breathing become rapid and shallow, and the faint tremor in his hands became uncontrollable. He started to clench his fists as he rounded the corner, when that didn¡¯t work he hugged himself tightly, thumbs rubbing painfully into his arms as he tried to calm himself. He needed one thing! One thing! Sinjin had already given him the go ahead. He wanted some small tomatoes, cucumber, and a head of lettuce, it would be enough to keep him fed for a few days and then he was going to use the leftovers to start a little vegetable garden near his home. Or at least that was the plan. ?Next to the fresh vegetables were little woven baskets of varying sizes, grabbing the smaller one, he had to grasp it firmly between his two hands to stop it shaking uncontrollably. Approaching the large basket of tomatoes he started to carefully pick them one by one and put them in his basket. It was taking all his concentration to keep his hands steady. He heard the sound of the door whoozing open and that one distraction caused him to lose his focus and the basket and tomatoes tumbled to the ground. Tag |

Time:?Morning Location:?St. John's Market Characters:?Snicks, Mirriam You would have thought she carried some highly contagious disease or had suddenly sprouted a second head the way the man reacted to her simple reply and then hurried away from her presence, no attempt at eye contact. Not exactly a social type, Mirriam frowned. Oh well, the man was an adult and free to live his life as he pleased. On second thought maybe he had mental issues. It happened. For a long time the Paradise had a customer who kept trying to bring his horse into the bar itself and claimed the horse was the only one he could have meaningful conversations with. Aury and her tried reasoning with the old fellow but in the end there was no way around it and rather than yet another long winded argument, Aury simply informed him he was banned from the place. The man then claimed he would take his business elsewhere where they would welcome his horse. Good luck on that. She had forgotten the whole thing of a few minutes earlier and kept shopping for necessary food items when there was a noise. Looking down the produce aisle there was a full basket of tomatoes scattered on the floor and that very same man stooping down to reach for them. Apparently an accident, it could happen to anyone. Mirriam moved toward the man. "Here, lemme help you with those," she magnanimously offered, bending down to snatch the closest loose tomato to her, they had scattered quite well it seemed. |
Date:?20/09 Mortified Snicks fell to his knees to collect the errant tomatoes. He flinched when he felt another presence by his side but calmed himself enough to stutter out a ¡®thank you¡¯. The tremor in his hands was still pronounced, it made picking the tomatoes up individually impossible so he brushed a few together and scooped them in his hands before depositing them back in the basket. The methodical act helped calm him somewhat and by the time the task was done he felt more in control of himself. He found a spot over Mirriam¡¯s shoulder, the closest he could look ¨C eye contact was just too much at this point, ¡°Thank you for your help, I appreciate it. I did not mean to interrupt your shopping,¡± Tag On Thu, Oct 31, 2019 at 5:35 PM M H via Groups.Io <joseph.cade=[email protected]> wrote: Date:?20/09 |

"You're welcome," she replied even as she collected another loose tomato then placing it in it's proper basket. The poor guy was still rather spooked and apparently eye contact was just too much for him so she kind of gave up on that and concentrated on the task at hand. It didn't them more than a few seconds more to finish.
"There, easy enough. And I didn't mind the interruption - after all if I had dropped something, I'd certainly hope someone would be willing to assist me," she smiled even he didn't see the gesture. She then stood up, "Besides you have good taste, I love tomatoes also. Cooked, made into sauce, in salads." TAG |
Date:?20/09 Snicks was relieved that she wasn¡¯t upset and that she seemed understanding. He had a second look to make sure everything was in place and they hadn¡¯t accidentally squashed any tomatoes before speaking again. ¡°Thanks. I am going to try and grow them,¡± he offered up, his version of an olive branch, ¡°my neighbour is going to help me. They really like to be self-sufficient here.¡± Tag |

"Growing them sounds like a fine project. I wish I had a green thumb but plantlife and I do not seem to get along," she smiled.
"Although if your crops are bountiful enough, I could see myself being interested in some, providing we can come to a deal," Mirriam added then shrugged her shoulders, "Although I should not rush you. You have to have a crop first, right?" "By the way, I forgot to introduce myself. I am Mirriam, Mirriam Starbright," she declared. |
