"Yeah, I have no fault with 'easier'!"? She laughed, then shrugged.? "Pipes, huh?? Dunno on that...I mean, I really don't think smokin' is so good for ya..."? Again, she laughed, even if it was a bad jest, then she nodded.? "I can do some with pipes an' such, not too complicated..."? Then she added, "I'd need a couple hours a day ta work at th' livery, though.? I can get up early an' do that...got a horse there."

Virgil couldn't help but laugh at the dorky joke. He liked her strange sense of humor, at least she saw the funny things in life. "Yeah, that shouldn't be a problem. My old man... that is... my adopted pop, he has horses... I know all about poop relocation skills" he replied giving Bettina a charmingly crooked smile. He got up and brushed off the bottom of his pants. "Let me walk you back to where ever you were going" he insisted.

It was early morning when Mirriam slipped into her room, still not dawn though so had not gotten up for another day of brick making. The saloon girl undressed quietly then put on a slip of thin material, approached the bed in her bare feet then threw back half the covers.

"Sorry, like it or not, honeybabe, you got company," she announced in soft tones as she then crawled into her side of the bed.

"'S'okay," Bettina mumbled, only half-awake.? She'd been aware when the singer had come in, but marriage had helped to train her not to come too far awake.? Besides, she'd stayed up longer than she'd intended, sitting part-way down the stairs, watching Mirriam performing.? Not only had it been entertaining, but Bettina had been most impressed with how smoothly and easily she interacted with the customers.?

Her breath reeked of alcohol,in fact Bettina probably noticed the young woman's voice sounded..well a bit different, the words somewhat slurred.

"I think I'm jus...gonna curl up and die....like real peaceful."

"Sure..."? Snuggling in the covers, Bettina turned her back to the other young woman to avoid the odor, then pulled the blanket over her head.? "Ya sing real pretty," she murmured, shifting slightly to make sure her companion was covered before yawning and adding, "Don't die too much."

Licking his lips, and pulling the lower one between his teeth Virgil amended his idea when Bettina said she was pretty good at?tinkering. "Well then, we can split the cleaning chores, and if we got some kind of fixing problem you can tackle it". She looked a little caught in deep thought for a moment, almost sad about something.... Virgil didn't know that his deep bond with his ladies was showing or making Bettina all melancholy.

"If ya want."? Bettina shrugged.? "I don't mind cleanin' so much, dependin' on how messy everyone is."? If the residents were relatively polite and didn't leave things unnecessarily laying around, than basic maintenance cleaning wouldn't be bad.? Well, unless the boss was unreasonably picky about detail.? Not that Bettina wasn't thorough with her cleaning, but some folks were never happy and could find fault with anything.

"Can you fix pipes and stuff?" he asked intent to help her find jobs that weren't his forte or to help with ones that were hers. "I want to advance things in Brea like the cities, make life easier, you know?"

Bettina actually seemed pretty on board with his idea. Better yet she seemed to get him.?Virgil beamed boyishly because it made him feel pretty smart and compassionate, and all those big fancy words that girls and guys liked to be called... and liked finding in others.

Licking his lips, and pulling the lower one between his teeth Virgil amended his idea when Bettina said she was pretty good at?tinkering. He wanted to ask if she was alright, and suddenly she was smiling and talking about her father and it was his turn to feel emotions churn inside him... Cobbs had been the best adoptive father a boy could be graced with, but sometimes he thought about his real parents. And Nova Jane's. Virgil shook his head to clear it before he started to wallow in self pity.?

Re: 20/19 - Go Where The Guitar Takes You (OPEN)

He pushed his hair out of his face and fidgeted a little. "Yeah, Ella...she's mah girl... or mebbe' I'm her boy... or both...but she has a mess o'cats and uses them to help people when their kind'a all messed up in here" Virgil said gesturing to his head, and then his chest. "Or here".
"Yeah, animals can do that," Bettina agreed with a nod. Even her big, old horse made her feel better and gave her something to focus on, and taking care of him gave her a reason to work hard and make bricks.

His face reddened slightly at her question. "Um...I dunno' I guess like cleaning house... that's usually my chore but I hate it, so I'll trade yah". His shoulders came up in a shrug, "And I kind'a suck at it". Scratching the back of his neck Virgil gave her a curious expression, "What can you do? I mean I do whatever to make a trade but music is my thing, just doesn't always feed my belly... or the girls... Ella and Rosalind..."
"Oh, well, cleaning is cleaner than makin' bricks," she had to allow. It wasn't something she embraced, was a bit tedious, but it was still honest work and far more agreeable than making bricks, and if it came with a bed and cats, all the better!

She smiled as he unconsciously honored the ladies he mentioned. It was sincere, and there was precious little of that to be had sometimes. And she could remember a time that she had someone she felt that way about, and the other way around. It was nice to have that, and a little melancholy not to.

When he said their names his hands came up to his heart without thinking, and he nervously pulled them back when Virgil realized what he was doing. "I gotta' okay it with them too, but I'm sure they wouldn't mind. There's space in Hanami and we could use the help... Jis'... well, you'd still have to work and stuff jis' not have to worry about a bed and food, you know.." He frowned a little and looked at his feet which were bare at the moment.

"No one should be...homeless" he mumbled softly although there were always someone's barn with space it wasn't the same as having your own bed.
She shook her head, glancing at him. "No...even livin' in a caravan, it's still home." And it dawned on her then that she really hadn't had a place that was 'home' since she'd been widowed, even if she'd been staying in familiar places.

"I'd like that, yeah." Her smile widened. "And I'm pretty handy with a hammer an' screwdriver an' such, can fix any manner of things. My dad was a tinkerer, taught me how ta tinker, an' that's what I do best." And it made her happy, to take something that was broken and useless and give it hope again.

(Merry Christmas!)
You, too!

Virgil stared at Bettina for a moment, distracted by the way her cheeks dimpled up when she smiled.

"Cats?"? At that, she brightened.? She liked animals of any sort, but cats and rabbits in particular.? "I have a roomie already, she's really nice, but my own bed?"? With a frown, she looked at him.? "What's th' catch?? Like, what sort of work?? And...too bad I don't know an endearing asshole..."

"Do you wanna see heaven tonight?
Underneath those lights you will look so beautiful
Do you wanna see the stars before they fall?"

Eyes closed, Bettina listened to the tune, a wistful smile on her face.? It was so pretty, and he was looking at her as if it was written especially for her, even though it couldn't possibly be.? Still, it was fun to pretend, and she was able to appreciate the skill that went into the craft, and while she was a bit envious, she knew full well that everyone had their own strengths, and that although she couldn't compose music, she could take a machine that was useless and give it life again.

"That's so beautiful," she murmured, "yer gonna be a hit, I'm sure!"

"Hey dirty girl..." he said leaning back to rest on his elbows and look up at the sky. "... I know this endearing asshole, who knows where all the good jobs are... But he can't really be in two places at once and cover them all". Virgil turned his head to look at her, "He might even know a spot where a gal could sleep in her own bed... Jis' saying..."

"Oh, really?"? She glanced at him with a grin, shrugging. "I might be interested..."? Almost anything but making bricks?

"If you can handle some music, a horde of cats and some roomies...but yah have yer own bed and what not".

Virgil liked her, she was funny. Of course maybe it could have been the mushrooms, they made him a little giddy and goofy. But Bettina was just... he couldn't really describe it... He just liked her, but then he liked a lot of people. Wasn't like he had a hard time making friends himself. Virgil showed her the basics, some chords, and how to play a simple tune.

"Do you wanna see heaven tonight?
Underneath those lights you will look so beautiful
Do you wanna see the stars before they fall?"

He sang to her with a growing smile. It was just the chorus of the song he was working on... Virgil had started writing it with Rosalind and Ella in mind. But he could just as easily see Cobbs asking Nova the same thing. As fun as it was to try the song out on someone that wouldn't have the bias of loving him and telling him everything he did was golden... Well, he should be helpful to Bettina, she was kind enough to keep him company.

Virgil reached out and plucked a string on the guitar, and added with a grin. "If you can handle some music, a horde of cats and some roomies...but yah have yer own bed and what not".

As the girl suddenly went into an outlandish tale about a mud monster, Virgil realized this was the person making adobe for Stroud. Bettina was her name, and she laughed easily. His side went warm when she sat next to him and he flashed a dorky smile. "I knew Bettina translates to Dirty Girl. coz' Virgil means endearing asshole... But don't tell anyone it's a family secret" he said giving a whimsical grin.
"Ah, I suspected as much." Giving a solemn nod, Bettina added, "Your secret is safe with me."

"Sure you could play guitar, why not?" His brows arched upward when she admitted she played an instrument. "Bettina plays the concertina" he sing songed in a teasing manner at her. "Dun' have to teach me to make bricks, I usually do that for Stroud but I wouldn't want to take food outt'a yer mouth. Must be new to Brea, haven't seen you around before..."
"Yep, just been a couple'a days," she commented, not quite yet willing to give up too much information. "It's a nice place, though, and so far everyone has been kind." Then she shook her head. "But I ain't plannin' on makin' bricks fer a livin'. Just 'till I can look around fer somethin' more suitable." Hopefully not too long!

Virgil picked up his guitar and slid it into Bettina's lap and hands. "Curl your fingers like this" he said showing her.
"Okay." She did as asked, smiling at the feel of the warm, smooth instrument in her hands, taking a moment to press lightly on some of the strings without actually making any noise. "All right, I'm ready to make a beautiful noise now!" She laughed.

"No offense, darlin', but you agreed to Aury's job offer, it's a decent enough job...though a temporary one, true," Mirriam felt compelled to point out, though actually she sympathized with the other girl's situation. A dirty boring job is what that was.

"Yeah, and I ain't complainin' per se -- good food, soft bed -- just not what I plan on doin' forever."?? Wasn't the labor so much as she preferred something that challenged her brain a little more!

"So you looking for other jobs then? What sort of jobs do you have in mind? I mean other than saloon singer and dancer of course - that job is filled," she smiled.

"Oh, well, no, I got no intention ta take your job, wouldn't be civil, after yer kindness and all."?? She smiled, her words sincere, should she ever be able to step into Mirriam's shoes... She wouldn't do that to a body who had to been so nice to her.

"Lookin' for most anything that involves tinkerin'... Fixin' things, puttin' things together, paintin', hammerin' and whatnot."

Brick making was close, but just not the same! Too much really hard work.

"Hon, I do most of my work at night so no it don't keep me awake. In fact I'm getting all gussied up here to go down and do my job. So you'll have the bed all to yourself until early in the morning when we close up. I'll just slip in the bed so pick whichever side you want. Now if you're snoring away and taking up the whole bed, I will just give you a big shove to make room" she declared with a sparkle in her eyes.

"Seems like will be ships passin' in the night... Well, mornin'.?? I'll be up with the sun so I can be done before it's too hot out.?? But I'll have everything laid out so I won't make a fuss an' wake you up."?? She was pretty good at dressing quickly and quietly, and she'd do her best not to disturb Mirriam...she didn't want to cause an imposition and get tossed out.

Virgil looked up at the sound of an unfamiliar female voice and peered through his hair. His face reddened slightly but he sat back from his hunched over position on the guitar, fingers dragging back his hair to hook it behind an ear. "Uh huh, for the festival coming up..." he replied looking up at her.
"Oh, right, the festival." Bettina had heard talk of it, but hadn't given it much thought. She was too busy with bricks, and hadn't come to think of this place as home yet. "I'm sure you'll be a hit!"

His brow scrunched up for a moment as he took in her appearance. She had a nice smile. was pretty without trying to be... even covered in mud. He gave a boyish laugh, Virgil couldn't help it with having just been gnawing on a 'shroom. "You're dirty, what happened?" he asked setting the guitar aside and trying to decide if he should be concerned. She seemed too happy to have fallen down in a local sty or something.
"Oh, it was the most awful thing!" Bettina's eyes widened as she tried to look serious. "I was just mindin' my own business, walkin' down th' street when I was grabbed by th' Mud Monster an' pulled down. I managed to fight him off by... Oh! By throwin' bricks at 'im!"

She laughed and brushed her hair back from her eyes. At least her hands and face of free of mud. "Now we're friends and he helps me make bricks!" She was enjoying the prattle...the man was easy to talk to and had a friendly smile.

He patted the spot next to him on the stoop in invitation, mouth curling into a mischievous smirk. "Want a guitar lesson dirty girl...?' he teased her. "...My name's Virgil".
"Bettina." Grinning, she sat beside him, then laughed again. "How'd you know that Bettina translates ta Dirty Girl?" She didn't mind the nickname at all, or find it offensive -- it was good to have a nickname -- and there were certainly worse things to be called.

"You think I can learn guitar?"

Of course, why not? "I do sort of play th' concertina... You know, like squeezin' a dead cat!" Another laugh, then she added, "I'd sure like ta try. An' I can teach you ta make bricks t' fight th' dreaded Mud Monster!"

One brick, two brick, mud brick, new brick...

Bettina was making up her own songs in her head as she mixed mud, straw and water into thick adobe then slathered the sludge into molds. She'd been at it a few days now, and making up the silly rhymes was keeping her sane...that, and the knowledge that someday her bricks would live on in a wall or fence or something, well after she was gone. And to be sure that people knew they were 'her' bricks, she had drawn smiley faces in them, a signature of sorts.

Finally done for another day, she decided to head for the stables to check on her horse...no sense in getting all cleaned up just to have the big brute slobber all over her! But as she passed a building she noticed the man on the porch, plucking out a tune on a guitar, and she stopped to listen for a moment.

"That's really nice," she commented with a smile. "I wish I was that good. Did you write it?"

Date:?20/09
Time:?Early Evening
Location:?Outside of Hanami
Characters:?Virgil/OPEN

Virgil had done all his chores, and even a few odd jobs for the day to bargain for things like a loaf of fresh baked bread. He had stopped at Paradise because he heard Stroud needed some adobe bricks done, but there was already someone out back at it. So he was sitting outside now after cleaning up so he wouldn't disturb patrons or one of his partners while they worked.

He was plucking out a tune on his guitar with a beat up old leather bound book that he was scratching out a song on the parchment. Virgil was trying to think of something nice to play for the Autumn Equinox, not the same old same old. Chewing on the dried stem of a mushroom he let the chemicals in the fungus get him just high enough to relax. Too much and he would be seeing ghosts or whatever was locked in the recesses of his head.

Tossing the remnants of the stem into a pocket, Virgil plucked out his tune and mumble out some worlds feeling pretty good... He sure could go for some quiet company.

I came into the saloon and at that time Aury was working for another man who was the owner of the joint. But he did most of the work. We talked, we hit it off. He listened to me sing a song for him and liked what he heard. He hired me. We became good friends..which is what we still are in case you're thinking there is more to it. There isn't that many years of age between us but if anything he treats me like I was his daughter, his precious daughter. Woe unto anyone who tries anything on me."

"That's my story....it's worked out pretty good for me I think," she smiled.
"If yer happy an' safe, got a roof over yer head, decent food," Bettina shrugged, "an' doin' somethin' ya like, what more do ya need?"? She grinned.? "More'n most people have, even them that think they have all they need.? Me?"? She laughed.? "Wouldn't mind not havin' ta play in mud all day, and I'll feel a sight better when I have something more permanent.? I got a horse ta see after, not sellin' him."

With a yawn she sat back on the bed, then asked, "Does th' noise keep you awake?? I'm not particularly a light sleeper, but..." Well, as worn out as she was, she wasn't sure how well she'd sleep, what with being in new to everything.

Bettina was trying real hard to be nice, Mirriam noticed and that more than likely was because the woman was indeed a nice person. She shouldn't be suspicious.

"Don't be too much on my dancing. But thank you for saying it," she responded.

As the other girl changed, she was curious about the saloon singer/dancer. It was reasonable enough.

"Nice effort. Needs work...a lot of work. Still, I will admit something to you. While I have a good voice and can sing quite well, my dancing is ..........adequate at best. The trick is to show my legs and on occasion tease them into thinking they are going to catch glimpses of other parts of me. They love that," she explained.
"Ah, of course, keep them wantin' more!"? Bettina nodded as she sat on the bed and started pulling her socks off.? "I bet ya dance real nice.? Ya move a lot gentler than me, I've seen that much."

"But please don't go thinking I strip naked or anything. Because I don't. It's the mystery which attracts them. I figure once they would see everything, well...how would you top that?" she added.
"Good point.? Besides, I reckon it would be mighty drafty!"? Bettina laughed as she took off her work shirt and folded it neatly then donned a long pink tee shirt.? "You been here a long time?? Did ya start off with the singin' and dancin'?"
