Re: End-of-Life for CabConverter
开云体育Hi David,I, and I’m pretty sure the rest of us Mac Heads, would also like to thank you for all your help letting us “play” in the contest with our Macs. And, also the other who have helped all these years. You have done a great job in supporting CC and your fellow ham. A sincere “thank you”.? Stay safe and Vy 73, Jeff/wb0m

开云体育As Scott said, we will continue to support you as best we can, but will not update CC, it’s becoming more and more difficult for smaller ‘one-off’ type programs to be run on Mac OS due to Apples increasing security controls.73 de David, M0XDF The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Re: End-of-Life for CabConverter
Scott - I'm still a novice operator (even though I've reached the General level) and found CC easy to use for those contests in which I participated.
That said, I just got an email back from Bill K1GQ after asking about Winter Field Day. He indicated that the rules are too different from other contests and it would be best to use Field Day and then edit the Cabrillo file. I thanked him but feel that is an invitation to creating errors. I'll continue to use CC until I can't and maybe then SL or some other software will provide the Cabrillo export we need. Thanks again for all your work, Fred KI7BCL |
Re: End-of-Life for CabConverter
开云体育Hi Scott, Thank you so much for putting your time into CabConverter over this past decade and more. I cannot express my full gratitude when I discovered you'd developed the program. As a Mac-head and MLDX fan-boy, I was thrilled to see a program that would allow me to use what I had in the shack AND be report my results. Your Mac/ham radio legacy is in good hands with SkookumLogger. I have used the combination of SkookumLogger and MLDX for a while now and it does a great job of combining contesting and MLDX. SkookumLogger Author Bill, K1GQ, has been very quick about resolving any minor issues. So, thank you Scott, and the rest the CabConverter crew/moderators, who have have given us ham radio-Mac users the opportunity to “play”.? BTW: ?Getting a chance to meet you in person at the ARRL Centennial Convention was on of the highlights of the day. You’re much taller than you sound on the radio <g>. Thank you. End-of-Life for CabConverter
Fellow contesters, ? I discovered the joy of contesting within the first few months of being licensed. It was 2002, sunspots were many, and I was working Europeans like they were next door. I was on an Icom 746Pro and a Power Mac G4 Cube running MacLoggerDX. It was CQ WW DX Phone and, to be honest, I don’t even remember where I stuffed the exchange information. I didn’t know I’d need it. At the end of the contest, when it was time to submit my log, I discovered the hole in my world. What was a Cabrillo file? ? This prompted me to write the first scripts that would become CabConverter. Windows and DOS users had contest loggers, but nothing existed for that purpose for MacOS—so I wrote my own converter. In the intervening years, I published the first CabConverter 1.0 application written in RealBasic. When it became clear that I needed a way to allow users to build support for contests themselves, I rewrote the program as CabConverter 2 ten years ago. ? I did all this because there wasn’t a solid contest logger for the Macintosh. That has changed. SkookumLogger is now a very mature logging program with a rich feature set. It is also free and available directly from the Apple App store. SkookumLogger is a far superior solution to using MacLoggerDX + CabConverter. I’ve used it in a couple of contests, and I must say I’m impressed. ? I am recommending that all Macintosh-based contesters download and examine SkookumLogger. You can read about it here:? ? This weekend I played in the North American QSO party. When the contest was over, I generated a Cabrillo file and submitted it quickly and without any issues. I then exported my log from SkookumLogger to ADIF and imported the data into MacLoggerDX. From MacLoggerDX I uploaded to LoTW, eQSL, and ClubLog, again without incident. I believe that other CabConverter users will have similar experiences.? ? CabConverter’s purpose is now served much better by another program: SkookumLogger. I am therefore declaring that CabConverter’s end-of-life will be at the end of this contesting season (at the end of May). We (the two moderators and I) will continue to support the program directly through the Groups.IO platform. We will answer questions, moderate messages, help users through conversion and installation issues, and provide any other guidance you might find helpful through May. ? After that, we’ll open up the group a little bit, allowing users to join without the level of moderation we currently have. We will monitor the traffic and remove bad actors as necessary, but otherwise allow more free access to the software and recipes. We will NOT remove the group or delete the files. CabConveter will be around for as long as people need it. This is a good time to remind people that the software is indeed free, source code is available, and JavaDoc provides reasonable commentary on the form and function, should anybody else want to make a project of this. But I’m guessing that won’t be necessary. Once you try SkookumLogger you’ll be happy to never think about Java or recipes again. ? You should know that this has been a discussion between the other moderators and me for some time. We wanted to be sure that there was a stable path without CabConverter available for our users. I believe there is. ? It has been an honor and a joy to provide this to the Macintosh Ham community. I still love MacLoggerDX (it is my main logger) and I still love contesting. Now I have better software for these efforts in SkookumLogger. I hope all of you find this change refreshing as well. ? Sincerely, ? — Scott (NE1RD and author of CabConverter) |
No Contests - yet CCContacts is in ~/Documents/CCContests folder.
As titled. I've just installed CC on my Mac.?
I've moved the CCContests to?~/Documents/CCContests folder. I've rebooted CC runs in java fine, but the contests dropdown box is empty. I've also tried the permissions hack - but no Java option shows in files/folder Any help appreciated MacOS 10.15.6 Catalina ... Shaun |
Re: Installing CC 2.05 on MB Pro with OS 11.0.1(Big Sur)
开云体育Hey ScottI am still using Mojave and I will continue to do so until Apple won’t support it any longer. I have Microsoft Office for Mac which won’t run on the upgrades for one thing and CC which works easily on this OS as well. I checked with the all seeing eye of David Allred who said that was a fine plan. 73 es tnx todd WB2ZAB

Re: Installing CC 2.05 on MB Pro with OS 11.0.1(Big Sur)
William,
Please see this message: /g/CabConverter/topic/running_cabconverter_in_big/78777167 and watch the video mentioned on the group's home page for instruction on how to start CabConverter from the Terminal command line. If this doesn't work for you, please let us know. We're all getting used to the new MacOS release. Thank you, -- Scott (NE1RD and author of CabConverter) |
Running CabConverter in Big Sur
Colleagues,
The new MacOS 11 "Big Sur" has brought some changes that impact Java, the tool I used to build CabConverter. Specifically, it looks like there isn't a good way to give Java permissions to view your disk directly. This means we can no longer just double-click the Jar file for CabConverter and have it work. BUT, CabConverter works fine if you start it from the terminal application. I've made a quick YouTube video showing how to do this. In short: 1. Make sure the CabConverter.jar file is in your home directory/folder. That makes it easy to find. 2. Start the terminal application. 3. From the prompt type "java -jar CabConverter.jar" CabConverter will start and MacOS will begin challenging you, asking if the Terminal application should be able to have access to your Documents directory. Say yes. If you try to open an ADIF file that you've put on your desktop, MacOS will challenge you again asking if Terminal should be able to access your desktop. If you give CabConverter permission to access the disk locations when prompted, it should work as before. Apple is trying to do a good thing here: making sure applications that run on your machine are not doing mischief. Denying random apps access to your disk is a good way to protect you. Our problem is Apple didn't give us an easy way to grant Java applications such permissions. This work-around gives us a path forward. A big shout out to Philip Alley for doing a Zoom session with me yesterday, and helping me debug this problem. As always, I'm here, along with Rich (AB1HD) and David (M0XDF), to make sure you can get your log converted and your Cabrillo entry submitted. Please let us know if you have any problems. Thank you, -- Scott (NE1RD and author of CabConverter) |
Re: Installing CC 2.05 on MB Pro with OS 11.0.1(Big Sur)
开云体育Scott,Thanks so much for your prompt response. When I go to Full Disc Access there is (already) a checked entry “Java Remove”. When I went to add and search and entered “Java” the only entry returned was “Java Remove” I though perhaps this meant that my Java download and install had not worked properly. ?So I clicked through that again getting a notice tat the install was successful. BUT nothing changed. ?Still seeing only “Java Remove”. I clicked on CabConverter.jar but still got the "No contests found” message. In short, no progress. Regards, Phil

Re: Installing CC 2.05 on MB Pro with OS 11.0.1(Big Sur)
Dear Phil,
Please try the following: 1. Open System Preferences 2. Click on Security & Privacy 3. Click on Full Disk Access 4. Unlock by authenticating (open the lock in the bottom left) 5. Look for Java in the list of applications. ?IT PROBABLY ISN'T THERE. We will likely need to add it. 6. Click the + button if Java is not present 7. In the search box (upper right) type "java" 8. You should now have a list of applications with "java" in the name. You will likely have multiple instances of Java. That's normal. 9. Select all the instances of "java" (click the top one, then shift-click the bottom one to select the range) 10. Click "Open" to add those selected applications to the list 11. Verify that every java you selected has a checkmark by it. I had three, so all three are now checked. 12. Close System Preferences You should now have no more permissions problems with Java. I can't say if that fixes everything--you need to try it and see. But, without these permissions I wouldn't expect anything to work, so it was a necessary first step. Please let me know if this helps. It is is a success, you might want to tell the group, too! Thanks for your patience. We'll work through this. -- Scott (NE1RD and Author of CabConverter) ne1rd --at-- arrl --dot --net---- |
Installing CC 2.05 on MB Pro with OS 11.0.1(Big Sur)
I too installed the new (to me) CC2.05. (Had used old version successfully a while ago.) I had to download Java to complete the install. (jre-8u271-macosx-x64.dmg)
I did move the CC Contests folder to Documents first as instructed but when launching CC I get the "No contests found" message. In looking in Preferences - Security & Privacy - Privacy - Files and Folders there is no mention of Java. If I click on "Full Disk Access" there is a check box selection availavble for "Java Remove". If I check that box, then : "Java Remove Full Disk Access" appears under Files and Folders but this entry is dimmed out. ?Either way, restarting CC 2.05 still results in "No contests found". TNX in advance! Phil AA2EA Louisville KY |

Re: cc not working

Brandon, Check your permissions for folder access in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Files and Folders. Ensure java has access to your documents folder. 73, Brian On Sun, Nov 22, 2020, at 22:43, BRANDON CURRIN wrote:
