End-of-Life for CabConverter
8
Fellow contesters, I discovered the joy of contesting within the first few months of being licensed. It was 2002, sunspots were many, and I was working Europeans like they were next door. I was on an Icom 746Pro and a Power Mac G4 Cube running MacLoggerDX. It was CQ WW DX Phone and, to be honest, I don’t even remember where I stuffed the exchange information. I didn’t know I’d need it. At the end of the contest, when it was time to submit my log, I discovered the hole in my world. What was a Cabrillo file? This prompted me to write the first scripts that would become CabConverter. Windows and DOS users had contest loggers, but nothing existed for that purpose for MacOS—so I wrote my own converter. In the intervening years, I published the first CabConverter 1.0 application written in RealBasic. When it became clear that I needed a way to allow users to build support for contests themselves, I rewrote the program as CabConverter 2 ten years ago. I did all this because there wasn’t a solid contest logger for the Macintosh. That has changed. SkookumLogger is now a very mature logging program with a rich feature set. It is also free and available directly from the Apple App store. SkookumLogger is a far superior solution to using MacLoggerDX + CabConverter. I’ve used it in a couple of contests, and I must say I’m impressed. I am recommending that all Macintosh-based contesters download and examine SkookumLogger. You can read about it here: https://www.k1gq.com/SkookumLogger/ This weekend I played in the North American QSO party. When the contest was over, I generated a Cabrillo file and submitted it quickly and without any issues. I then exported my log from SkookumLogger to ADIF and imported the data into MacLoggerDX. From MacLoggerDX I uploaded to LoTW, eQSL, and ClubLog, again without incident. I believe that other CabConverter users will have similar experiences. CabConverter’s purpose is now served much better by another program: SkookumLogger. I am therefore declaring that CabConverter’s end-of-life will be at the end of this contesting season (at the end of May). We (the two moderators and I) will continue to support the program directly through the Groups.IO platform. We will answer questions, moderate messages, help users through conversion and installation issues, and provide any other guidance you might find helpful through May. After that, we’ll open up the group a little bit, allowing users to join without the level of moderation we currently have. We will monitor the traffic and remove bad actors as necessary, but otherwise allow more free access to the software and recipes. We will NOT remove the group or delete the files. CabConveter will be around for as long as people need it. This is a good time to remind people that the software is indeed free, source code is available, and JavaDoc provides reasonable commentary on the form and function, should anybody else want to make a project of this. But I’m guessing that won’t be necessary. Once you try SkookumLogger you’ll be happy to never think about Java or recipes again. You should know that this has been a discussion between the other moderators and me for some time. We wanted to be sure that there was a stable path without CabConverter available for our users. I believe there is. It has been an honor and a joy to provide this to the Macintosh Ham community. I still love MacLoggerDX (it is my main logger) and I still love contesting. Now I have better software for these efforts in SkookumLogger. I hope all of you find this change refreshing as well. Sincerely, — Scott (NE1RD and author of CabConverter)

CabConverter can't find CCContests folder
6
Hello All! I use MacLoggerDX and for the past eight or 10 years I have used CabConverter to get my Kansas QSO Party Log into the Cabrillo format for submission. This year I can't get CabConverter to find the CCContests folder even though I have placed it exactly where it is supposed to be (in my users' documents folder). I have tried in on Monterey Beta 6, Big Sur and even tried Catalina. Same results everywhere. I even tried launching it from the terminal. Same Result! Any tips would be greatly appreciated as I need to get the Wichita Amateur Radio Club merged log submitted for 2021. Thanks! 73 de Dale K0HYD in Goddard, KS (W0U) in the QSO Party -- 73 de Dale K0HYD Goddard, KS 67052

A Thank You before you go
2
Colleagues, As I see people begin to unsubscribe (hopefully because they've found a better solution!) I thought I should take this moment to thank all of you for your patience and support of CabConverter over the years. Speaking for the group's management team of me, Dave, and Rich, it has been a joy helping Mac-based contesters everywhere. Like I said before, we're not going away, but active support for the program will cease at the end of this year's contesting season in May. I'll keep this forum up for as long as there is a need, and so long Groups.IO allows it. From the bottom of my heart, thank you, and see you on the bands. 73, -- Scott (NE1RD and author of CabConverter)

NE1RD running CabConverter on Big Sur
2
Colleagues, I got a new MacBook Air running 11.2.3 (Big Sur) and was able to run CabConverter normally. But, I had to do the following: 1. Downloaded the CabConverter.tar file from the Files area and expanded it. 2. Downloaded the CabConverter.jar file from the Files area and overwrote the same file from step 1. 3. I double clicked on the CabConverter.jar -- and it refused to open, of course. 4. I had to go through the Security & Privacy thing where I said it was OK to run this program (open anyway...) 5. When CabConverter.jar did open, it behaved normally (much to my surprise). After I copied the CCContents folder all the contests appeared. 6. I was able to convert a fellow user's ADIF file without incident. This is on a MacBook Air M1 machine running Big Sur. I did go to the Java.com site and install the latest supported Java, agreed to all their terms (gave up my first born and all my forests and lands), and installed the Java normally. Maybe that is the secret to getting things working correctly again. The Java installed was Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_281-b09) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.281-b09, mixed mode) I hope that others can have the same luck with these steps. If not, please let me know and I'll help figure it out. Thank you and 73! -- Scott (NE1RD and author of CabConverter)

Late to the Party?
8
Like many, just returned last year to ham radio after decades away. Lots of progress, like Cabconverter, BUT I see it's at its sunset. Was just getting ready to try it when I saw the developer's message. Was going to use it to send in a 40-item check log for ARRL DX contest just completed but now it looks like I'm too late. Skookum next time, but should I bother now (Big Sur) or just submit hand log and move on to SL for future. Thanks, W6MVT

Thanks Dave. I logged them in MLDX. Can I import an ADIF to RumLog, and then convert them? Michael Guerin

I've also tried the permissions hack - but no Java option shows in files/folder Any help appreciated MacOS 10.15.6 Catalina ... Shaun

Installing CC 2.05 on MB Pro with OS 11.0.1(Big Sur)
6
I too installed the new (to me) CC2.05. (Had used old version successfully a while ago.) I had to download Java to complete the install. (jre-8u271-macosx-x64.dmg) I did move the CC Contests folder to Documents first as instructed but when launching CC I get the "No contests found" message. In looking in Preferences - Security & Privacy - Privacy - Files and Folders there is no mention of Java. If I click on "Full Disk Access" there is a check box selection availavble for "Java Remove". If I check that box, then : "Java Remove Full Disk Access" appears under Files and Folders but this entry is dimmed out. Either way, restarting CC 2.05 still results in "No contests found". TNX in advance! Phil AA2EA Louisville KY

Running CabConverter in Big Sur
Colleagues, The new MacOS 11 "Big Sur" has brought some changes that impact Java, the tool I used to build CabConverter. Specifically, it looks like there isn't a good way to give Java permissions to view your disk directly. This means we can no longer just double-click the Jar file for CabConverter and have it work. BUT, CabConverter works fine if you start it from the terminal application. I've made a quick YouTube video showing how to do this. https://youtu.be/kiF_uwMlskQ In short: 1. Make sure the CabConverter.jar file is in your home directory/folder. That makes it easy to find. 2. Start the terminal application. 3. From the prompt type "java -jar CabConverter.jar" CabConverter will start and MacOS will begin challenging you, asking if the Terminal application should be able to have access to your Documents directory. Say yes. If you try to open an ADIF file that you've put on your desktop, MacOS will challenge you again asking if Terminal should be able to access your desktop. If you give CabConverter permission to access the disk locations when prompted, it should work as before. Apple is trying to do a good thing here: making sure applications that run on your machine are not doing mischief. Denying random apps access to your disk is a good way to protect you. Our problem is Apple didn't give us an easy way to grant Java applications such permissions. This work-around gives us a path forward. A big shout out to Philip Alley for doing a Zoom session with me yesterday, and helping me debug this problem. As always, I'm here, along with Rich (AB1HD) and David (M0XDF), to make sure you can get your log converted and your Cabrillo entry submitted. Please let us know if you have any problems. Thank you, -- Scott (NE1RD and author of CabConverter)

Running CabConverter under Catalina (10.15.x) or later
2
#file-notice
Attention Catalina users: Apple continues to tighten its security policies with each new release. You may have noticed you must now grant specific applications access to the Documents or Photos directories. CabConverter may be bumping into those same security checks which are preventing the program from finding its recipes and loading log files. I have uploaded two files into the Files area in the "Java Permissions help" folder. They are: * policy.all * and runCabConverter.sh I suggest that users who are having problems with CabConverter on 10.15 or later start the application from the command line instead of just double-clicking on the icon. The "runCabConverter.sh" script will start CabConverter using this policy file -- and that should grant the permissions we need for the application. I also suggest opening the System Preferences and clicking on the "Java" icon. This will present you with a button to start the Java Control Panel in a separate window. Open that window and click on the "Security" tab. Ensure that the security level is "High" and NOT "Very High". Click the "High radio button to change it if necessary. Also, you should add an entry to the "Exception Site List". Click on the "Edit Site List..." button to pop up the "Exception Site List" window. Click the Add button and add the entry file:/ Click OK when you are finished. It will give you a warning: click Continue. Then click OK to close that popup window. You may now click OK to close the Java Control Panel. I am unable to reproduce some of the problems I've heard about, so I need some help debugging this. If you are a Catalina user, and you are having problems, please try these steps and let us know if it helped. Thank you and 73 de NE1RD. -- Scott (NE1RD and author of CabConverter)
