I've read that knockoffs of the Prolific chip won't work with the Prolific
driver. The REAL ones will work.

I've used one of those cheap "Octopus" (multiple connector tips) types with the
CH341 driver on a Baofeng UV-5R, and it worked fine (finding the correct driver
was an issue, though). I also have a cable with an FDTI chip that gave me no
problem.

People generally have the least amount of problems with cables that have the
FDTI chip.
