Ah, gotcha. I just looked at the Chirp port dialog. I think mine says something different when I have an FTDI cable plugged in. Sorry about that! ___ Jim Mitchell | |

I did a quick search and it looks like you may need an FTDI cable for that radio.? ___ Jim Mitchell | | On Sat, Apr 20, 2024 at 22:11, Jim W7RY via groups.io <jimw7ry@...> wrote:

Re: No support for Baofeng UV-5RX3?
Thanks for the responses everyone.
I finally got Chirp to work although it was not able to hit the reapeaterbook site directly through the "source" feature, for some security issue (permissions?) and I thought it might be that I didn't have a repeaterbook account so I made one but that didn't change anything. But I was able to get some (kinda) working csv's from RB although I had to go in and redact some crappy php syntax error messages from the server that for some reason - and I have 30+ years of writing code and can't figure out why - they ended up IN the file. But after deleting them it worked and uploaded. Another anomaly was that I selected FM only but RB added "dig", "auto" and "PG25" frequencies as well which were a real pain to delete by hand - almost like programming by hand! But not quite!! HIHI!! I think I smell a python script in the making. Cheers, 73 Rob, KC4NYK |
Re: No support for Baofeng UV-5RX3?
You do have a legit Baofeng from a verified dealer. It just got put under Radioddity instead of Baofeng.
Baofeng Tech (the radio dealer in the USA) was first to have a Baofeng UV-5R like radio with 3 bands. The BTech UV-5X3. The Baofeng UV-5RX3 was an attempt at copying the BTech UV-5X3. It was first sold by Radioddity. Both are supported by CHIRP BTech UV-5X3: Vendor: BTECH / MODEL: UV-5X3 Baofeng UV-5RX3: Vendor: Radioddity / Model: UV-5RX3 The rule of thumb for Baofeng UV-5R like models... Baofeng models 2 TX power levels, 2 bands: Baofeng / UV-5R 3 TX power levels, 2 bands: Baofeng / BF-F8HP 2 TX power levels, 3 bands: Radioddity / UV-5RX3 |
Re: No support for Baofeng UV-5RX3?
Rob,
This is a bit off-topic, but I won't go on and on about this. The manufacturers and vendors aren't making it easy with all these HT's they're making. It's even confusing when you go to buy a phone. I was looking for deals on a Samsung S-24 Ultra phone. I found, on Amazon, an "S-24 Ultra" at a great price. At first, I thought it was a Samsung, maybe refurbished or otherwise used, and therefore at a low price. Then I didn't see the brand Samsung anywhere in the listing. It wasn't a Samsung. It was a nice-looking Android phone. I didn't really compare its appearance with the real Samsung phone, but it looked like a lot of high-end Android phones and some of the S-line Samsungs. I didn't buy it. I bought the real thing after mulling it over in my mind as to whether it was worth as much as they're asking for it. Anyway, the vendors are muddying the waters here. When I see UV-5RX3, I think Baofeng UV-5R and that it must be an improved model of that, when apparently, it's a Radioddity brand after all that! I have read where some Baofengs that only have 2M-440 can be put on 222 MHz with a Radioddity programmer tool. Or maybe it's the other way around? I have to think if that's done, that without specific low pass filters in there for 222, there will be all sorts of spurious emissions. These radios aren't all that clean with their signals even on the bands that they're approved for. Let us know if you get it sorted out. I wish we had a 222 MHz repeater around here, and I am thinking of funding such a repeater if my club will maintain it. Or, put it up at a friends house that's not the ideal location, but it would cover my area well enough. I'd have to maintain it, though, and I would want the repeater to be very reliable and not in need of service often. Have not found any reference to this on multiple Chirp or Baofeng forums or listserves. Did you try the manufacturer's programming software since CHIRP doesn't support your radio? I believe Baofeng does offer their programming software for free. I haven't used it, so I can't comment on it. The other possible solution might be to purchase software from RT Systems, if they support the radio. They support a lot more radios than CHIRP ever will be able to. I've used both CHIRP and RT Systems software. RT's is more refined, in my opinion, but does pretty much the same thing. I think their link to repeaterbook and its ability to sort by distance from your location are worth having if you don't mind paying for a programmer. Not long ago there were only a few models of HTs available, but they're flooding the market with all sorts of models and variations, some of which are not backward compatible with the older models. Yours might be one of those. Re: No support for Baofeng UV-5RX3?
Thanks Jim.
Being a home brewer and QRP advocate I rarely buy off the shelf radios and there seems to be a lack of clarity as to whose product you have, at least from Amazon. I thought I had a legit Baofeng from a verified dealer, Radioddity,? but now I see that there is also Baofeng Tech or BTech both of whom say they offer superior service to specifically in the case of Radioddity, to radio amateurs. I'm not sure yet if it's that or they are just clones and we stateside don't understand the machinations of Intellectual Property practices in that region. Same confusion with TinySA but fortunately the original manufacturer has really stepped up and called out the cloners. Don't see that happening with Baofeng (or I haven't found it yet, hihi) but it would be a big help if they would. Thanks for your response and I will either get this sorted out or return the radio. Cheers, Rob |
No support for Baofeng UV-5RX3?
Did not find the UV-5RX3 listed in the Chirp dropdown so tried 5R and 5X - neither would allow me to add the 1.25 mHz (220M) band frequencies, entering by copying from calling frequency list or by hand. Have not found any reference to this on multiple Chirp or Baofeng forums or listserves.
Also, this is not a Baofeng issue specifically but Chirp was unable to access Repeaterbook despite many tries and the debug log lists an SSL issue. Any help would be appreciated including creating and importing csv files of the desired frequencies once the lack of support for 1.25mHz issue is resolved.? Thanks? Rob, KC4NYK |
adding a new driver - python
Can anyone help with adding a new driver?
I have been following the instructions here:?? and here:?? but I am encountering difficulty. It seems that the instructions are not current or at least,?not complete. By working with and tweaking the UV5R and BF-F8HP drivers I have figured out a few things, but I have another radio that I cant seem to get working. If I start with the UV17Pro as a base, It will start to read, but I keep getting errors. It seems that the memory locations and response amounts are incorrect, but I have not been able to figure out how to enter them. Simply changing _mem_size as indicated in the instructions does not work. I have captures of the read from the factory software (p15uv) I imagine that getting the read will make it easier to get the write to work. I also have the save file from the p15uv software, but it seems to be organized differently from the captures. I also set specific information to enable identifying things like memory locations, etc. Thank you! |
Help Program Yaesu FT-65R with Chirp - Sort of Solved
For those who were following my problems getting the software (both Chirp and Yaesu) to program my Yaesu FT-65R with the Yaesu programming cable, you will remember that I could never get it to work on this HP-2000 Intel i3 Windows 10 laptop. Even though I had no problems doing so with all my other Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and even Linux Mint laptops. All those laptops were also HP-2000 laptops but with AMD CPUs. So in desperation, actually more out of curiosity than anything else, I ordered a cable directly from RT Systems. Their USB-55 programming cable. Went to their website and downloaded their driver, installed it. Worked perfect the first time out with their cable using both Chirp and Yaesu software. No issues. So it is a driver issue, something in this Intel i3 laptop simply does not like the Yaesu cable, some hardware (???) in it is causing the driver problem. Got any ideas what that could possibly be? BTW, I put a 2TB SSD in this laptop with a full fresh install of Windows 10. And before installing any programs, to eliminate all programs I had installed. except for Chirp and the Yaesu software, I tried the Yaesu programming cable with both programs. It did not work, so even a fresh install of Windows 10 did not solve the problem. But it works fine with the RT Systems cable. End of story, all FYI. Guess I'll never figure it out. But at this point, I really don't care. 73, Richard AG5M |
