I used the linear encoder strips from us digital with Tom's 4 axis dro. Zero
backlash! Great for the price. I made a special hopusing to fully enclose
the linear strip. I will post pictures later.

linear encoder/mylar scale system available from
which, despite its peculiar native resolution, is being successfully used
by some other list members to achieve a do-it-yourself DRO setup.
This does look to be the least expensive DRO setup I've seen for home
brew
