1st the question:

Is anyone using the output from a DRO as the position indicator in a
servo system. I've been contemplating this for quite some time, and
am fascinated (specially because I have the DRO installed on the Mill).
You probably can't do that. All the modern DRO's would use a
microprocessor to run the display, and probably update the reading
no more than 10 times a second. They also probably have a 'flicker
reduction' code to not show the least significant digit constantly changing.

My antique Allen-Bradley CNC control had an update rate of 100 Hz, and
it really suffered from massive error during medium speed moves because
of it. My new EMC program is currently sampling at 1000 Hz, and it
does a HECK of a lot better at keeping on target.

Now, if you mean just to use the linear encoders, that's another story.
