Re: OTA upgrade advice wanted

Autofocus software FocusMax makes for perfect focusing with my C14. No need of the Bahtinov mask or the dodgy FT adapter.

Re: OTA upgrade advice wanted

P.S.? A Bahtinov mask can speed-up focusing considerably and makes it easy to spot check the focus.

Re: OTA upgrade advice wanted

" FT adapter does nothing to prevent the greased moving mirror..."

That is not the purpose of the FeatherTouch (FT).? FT is?a gear reducer that facilitates fine focusing. I guess I should not have included that sentence in that paragraph as it seems to have confused you.

If a bit of focus wander is that upsetting then an external focuser will sooth your pain.? But it is?not a necessity.?

I use?cameras with?very small FOV (6 arcmin) and am able to cope with the focus shift via the method previously described; i.e. always focus in the anti-gravity direction.? In my setup, focusing in the opposite direction will often move the star completely out of the FOV but then turning?in the correct direction brings the star right back.? It's not a problem.

"It takes awhile to master the art of SCT focusing.? The key is to always approach focus from only 1 side - pushing against gravity.? If you go past then back-up and start again.? A "Feather Touch" adapter is a near necessity. Once you?master it, it's not that difficult."

Actually the FT adapter does nothing to prevent the greased moving mirror focuser from pole dancing causing image shift and mirror flop. Like a bandaid fix for a major injury.

External focusers can be easier but also?are potentially problematic due to the extended back-focus, weight limits, and?the varying the back-focus distance (some reducers require exact spacing with very small tolerance).

Re: OTA upgrade advice wanted

I didn't like the greased pole dancing moving mirror focuser on the C14 because of image shift, mirror flop, and the stiction inherent to a sliding focuser mechanism. I replaced the entire original C14 focusing mechanism with a compliant greaseless stictionless focuser of my own design. Shown below is the C14 mirror mounted on the new focuser that sits between the mirror and back plate. In addition to eliminating mirror flop and image shift the new focuser allows for collimation of the primary mirror/ focuser assembly from the C14 outside rear as shown below. A Robo-Focus motor is easily attached to the backlash free focus knob for motorized focusing, autofocus capability, and temperature compensation capability.

Re: More bad C14 Focal Reducers

I use an Optec Lupus .62x. works very well

Re: OTA upgrade advice wanted

I had a standard C11 and went to a C14HD. noticeable difference in flat field performance.? The C14 has some issues with focus and mirror flop so I would recommend using an OAG. I'm not sure if others have the same issue.?

The mirror?flop is an issue and I can't seem to resolve it. the mirror locks?help but engaging them changes focus enough to make a redo.?

The edge optics do not come into play if you use a hyperstar.? I have a C8 and a C9.25 I run with a hyperstar and use the C14 at F11 or F7 with an OAG.

Re: C11 Edge HD and SBIG STT-8300M

The SBIG is a standard 17mm spacer so the camera shouldn't matter.? All Celestron Edge telescopes require specific spacing to you camera.? If you are running at native focal ration, you will need to get an adapter.? Starizona has some (I have that) but Celestron as well as others have the spacers you will need.? If you use a reducer (celestron or Optec) be sure to order the correct adapter for you scope and camera.

Clear skies.

C11 Edge HD and SBIG STT-8300M

I have a C11 Edge HD and an SBIG STT8300M ccd camera.? Does anyone have experience using a similar setup?? If so, what type of connectors and spacers are you using to connect the camera to the telescope?

Any comments would be most appreciated.

?
Brian,
?
Please forgive my ignorance of astrophotography.? Was the color image at the left (beautiful!) achieved by taking one image each in red, blue and green, then combining them to get the color image?? If so, how are they combined?
?
Also, could you tell me what kind of camera you use?? I have an old C-14 scope, and a Nikon DSLR.
?
Many thanks!

Seeing was pretty good for a while when this data was captured. This image is a combination of 3 sets of RGB data taken over 22 minutes:

Re: Hello

Thanks Stan, I think you gave me something excellent advice when you said not to over plan or buy/sell. I will just see how things go after I play around with it a bit.

The Mallincam comes with a focal reducer which attaches directly to it and I've been assured this works fine on the EDGE, probably because the chip is so tiny.

The only reducer I see myself using in the future is the Celestron which I believe keeps the back focus the same.

I did actually by the threaded adapter today though so I can at least try, it wasn't very expensive.

Re: Hello

" Starlight Feathertouch Crayford ... visual I don't think it's possible to use along with my 2" diagonal"

I don't see why not unless it causes the back focus to exceed the corrector's specs, which?may not be noticeable in the EP.? But I don't see much advantage to using an external focuser for Visual use.? The built-in focuser is right there next to your eye and SCT image shift is not a real?issue (unlike for some small cameras where?a focus star might shift off the chip).

As for cameras, there should be no problem at all adapting any camera to prime focus imaging with the external focuser. But things get a bit squirrely when using the custom reducer because it requires a?specific back-focus with very small tolerance.? (BTW, reduction is a?near necessity for the MallinCam, which requires a low f-ratio to work properly).??The reducer?virtually prohibits the use of an external focuser because that focuser varies the critical back-focus required by the reducer. The focuser?may be able to be inserted (check all the distances) but it could only be used to perform small tweaks in concert with the internal focuser and hardly seems worthwhile.

I wouldn't over-plan this. Don't sell (or buy) anything until you have some experience and experimentation?with the scope and truly know what is needed and not needed.

Re: Hello

I have no issues finding a 3.25" adapter I just thought the focuser would be an issue with the limited back focus but after looking at the one your using I think I may be fine as it looks a lot longer than mine.

Dan

Re: Hello

Edge HD1100 comes with the SCT adapter as 2" SCT to 3.25" where your standard 2" SCT back Diagonal will be attached. however best bet is to ask the Manufacturer, if they have any suggestions...?
I am a noob here and using a cheaper Focuser in my HD1100 setup from Agena

Hello

Just wanted to say hello to the group!
I just joined yesterday and will be collecting a C11 EDGE HD tomorrow, so very excited.

Would anyone be able to give me some advice on Focusers for the C11 EDGE? I've read through the white paper and various threads and I understand the limited back focus on these OTAs but I wanted to see if my assumptions were correct.

I have a Starlight Feathertouch Crayford (FTF2015BCR-LW) which I was using on my previous Meade, I really do enjoy using it and it was only yesterday I found that may be an issue going forward as the dealer flat out told me it would not work. I know that Starlight do offer an adapter but it seems this is aimed at the regular C11.

For visual I don't think it's possible to use along with my 2" diagonal as after speaking to Televue and Starlight I would be at 177.8mm so it seems like I could not possibly use it in this configuration for visual.

For imaging, I have yet to purchase my planned Mono CCD but I do use a Mallincam X2 and SSIc which I would obviously use without a diagonal but as the focuser alone uses 76.2mm it seems it may be possible depending on my imaging train, especially if decide to try out the Celestron OAG.

Does anyone have a similar setup? Should I just resign to the fact that this focuser is not really compatible and sell it? :/ I will be sure to miss it in that case but I guess I could grab one of those micro focusers for fine focus.

Hey Chris,

Planetary imaging revolves around seeing. The strategy is to be at the camera when seeing is above average. I use clear sky clock, Unisys Weather, Weather Underground and Meteoblue to predict when seeing will be the favorable. This strategy is not foolproof---good seeing can manifest in average or below average forecasts. You need to put an eyepiece on it to verify. It may be that in your location, seeing is just not that good. If this is the case, lower magnification must be used, OR road trips to good seeing must be arranged.

Control what yoy can---collimation must be checked and or tweeked before every session. The scope MUST be acclimated to outside ambient temperature. Don't put your laptop under the front end of the scope----you and all heat sources must be behind the business end of the scope. Be patient....if seeing seems to be improving, hang around a while. Use a motorized focuser for fine adjustments. I stll focus by hand for 75% of my captures, but I learned how to do it years ago. If there is any question, get the motorized focuer.
