Doc clays cleaning kit
Hi everyone,
I have a 10 years old C14 and it is very very dusty now. Have not cleaned it ever. I have bought Doc Clay Complete Cleaning Kit. Does anyone have an experience with it? I have lost the instruction so can you please briefly suggest me the method to use it. I will be cleaning it in a day or two. Thanks for your help! Re: Electric Focuser
Hello John, You may want to try to point at a bright object then play around with OTA built-in focuser..., while SBIG is mounted on Moonlight focuser, until you get a good focus. ? if that did not work then?Your best bet is to talk to Moonlight manufacturer, they may have a workaround ... Good luck and Let us know how it goes...

Re: Electric Focuser
You may need to switch to a Starlight FTF2008BCR (35.687-56.01mm) or FTF2015BCR (35.687-76.327)?with a motor/control unit.? The FTF2008BCR is one of the shorter,?high-quality focusers that won't completely break the bank and should handle your load.? Beyond that you are looking at brands like Optec which are going to get more expensive but they have some very?good low-profile focusers. Ed Thomas Deep Space Products www.deepspaceproducts.com |

Re: It's time to send a message
Every dealing I have had with Ed Thomas at Deep Space products has been an exercise in excellence. I don't see any need or point in egotism and and would think forums on astronomy should be free of it. I'll back open discussion any day and am quite happy for suppliers and manufacturers to contribute any way they like. Happy to stand up for you Ed

Re: It's time to send a message
Ed,
Cloudy nights forums are dominated by attention starved individuals who get an ego boost by dispensing "acquired" forum knowledge they have cobbled together over time. Now there are some individuals with a vast wealth of knowlege and low ego who do post, but they are definitely in the minority. I have been a member for 10 years or so but only have 60 posts. Reason? Amongst other things, if you correct someone who has 10,000 posts they take it personally. Then, it becomes irrelevant what the true answer is, as the conversation digresses into face saving agressive commentary. Here is a thread that I commented on recently and realized afterwards I needed to pull back and quit posting.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýCN is what it is. It¡¯s the long arm of Astronomics with all that implies. I gave up on any positive expectations there long ago. Maybe you need to step back and realize that you do have a life outside of CN that deserves your attention far more than we do. |

It's time to send a message
Edward Thomas
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýIt is time to send a message to CloudyNights.? To do so, I encourage everyone to boycott CloudyNights for at least the next week (i.e., until 5/21).? While CN has been better since the new format disaster, the bad times have returned.? The site has once again been completely taken over by imperious moderators and admins and unfettered trolls.? In recent days one well-respected poster was threatened with being permanently banned because he simply suggested that "a month doesn't really qualify as fast" in regards to the replacement of an OTA that was defective out of the box when fanboys were suggesting that this was a reasonably good reaction time by the manufacturer.? He was told by a moderator who is outside of the US that, based on this commend, he had had enough "freedom of speech on the subject." ? I have been temporarily banned for posting the following on a thread where someone asked about affordable push-to computers: ? ????"If you don't want to try to build your own, then the Sky Commander is one of the least expensive but very good options." ? I do not sell any Sky Engineering products directly on my website and only have the Sky Commander available as an option to the T-REX mount about which there had been no discussion.? Regardless, I apologized and did not argue with moderator "editing" (i.e. the politically correct term for deleting everything but the period at the end of the sentence) of my post (as opposed to allowing me to edit or delete it which is the proper way to do things and something that I have made clear that I am more than happy to do if someone feels I made a mistake).? For this cooperative attitude, my reward was to be temporarily banned.? I did inform the mod that I am not a dealer for Sky Engineering and none of their products can be found separately on my website.? Thus, I could not profit from anything I said in that sentence, but I did not argue that my post should not have been deleted. ? These of course are just a couple of examples and many of you are familiar with the problems due to be treated poorly yourself or seeing friends and vendors being treated poorly. ? CloudyNights has become a place where the reasonable exercise of commenting on the threads (not to mention freedom of speech which and be properly limited on forums) is no longer allowed and vendors who seek to help people are persecuted for product pushing even when they make a conscious effort to avoid product pushing.? Vendors can be some of the most knowledgeable and helpful people out there and are not all there to push their products, but only a few of us continue to put up with the load of garbage the mods and admins throw at us because of our desire to help people and enjoy the conversations that go on just like anybody else does. ? So, I encourage everyone to boycott CloudyNights temporarily or permanently and not post.? Another option would be to simply post the word "BOYCOTT" whenever there is a thread that you would otherwise comment on.? It is time to send a message to CN from all the people who have been mistreated on CN.? I continue to hope for the day when a new forum is available where trolls and little kings no longer rule the day and vendors and manufacturers are allowed to reasonably talk about things and help people without the constant fear of running afoul of arbitrary rules and being banned as a result. ? Thanks for your time and continued support, Ed Thomas Deep Space Products ? |

DYI C14 Edge storage/transport case
I have been looking for a permanent case in which to
store and transport my C14 Edge OTA. I wanted to be able to transport
the OTA about 150 feet from the house to my temporary observing site
(also site of my future observatory). I finally found the $129 "Husky"
48-inch Job Box at my local Home Depot:
All other cases I had looked at did not have large enough interior dimensions to fit the OTA plus packing foam. This one did! My husband added the large caster wheels and handle, both purchased at Harbor Freight. He mounted the Husky case to an aluminum plate and attached the wheels and handle to the plate. The two caster wheels on the handle-side of the case can be locked by stepping on the red locking tabs. We also cut and press-fit some rigid foam board to line the inside of the case, so that the white foam blocks that came in the original OTA shipping box would fit and cradle the OTA securely. You can see some photos in the Albums section under "Robin's C14 Edge". The added height of this case on the wheels allows me to lift the OTA out and set it on top of the case, corrector plate down. I can then swing my mount's saddle horizontally and clamp the OTA into the saddle, then add counterweights. I then swing the scope up, wheel away the case, and I'm ready to go! If you're not familiar with this technique, there's a great video at:

Re: C11 Edge HD Mirror Screws
I've done that on a C11. i don't think it is the screws to the mirror but the screws between the mirror cell and the OTA cover. If I have your description correct - the mirror screws are on the back.? i think the screws are not tightening since they will have a nut behind them that came loose. If you done't mind a bit of surgery... I took by corrector plate off (mark the holes to clock the plate when you reassemble). this will give you easy access to mirror and internals and you can fix any loose screws. i have done this on a C11 and a C9.25 HD when my hyperstar gets seized and once when I installed a red dot finder on the wrong tap.? I have alo drilled and tapped holes in the aluminum mirror back to hold guiders and finder scopes.? If you did find the correct position to hold the losmandy plate, you may not want to bother with the other screws - the plate will hold the OTA in alignment.? unless you hear something roling around inside when you rotate the scope.? Any debris will scratch the mirror. If you are a little unsure - check with a stronomy dealer in your area, they may be able to fix it in a few days. Not sure how long Celestron will take. CAH |
