Yes I'd agree I have a small chip? (QSI 532 Camera) and there does not
seem to be a problem. some times I do not bother to alter the main focus to get
the required separation and do not notice any difference.

As for the exact distance. It is important, but to a degree. If you use an
APS-size chip camera (as I do) it is not that critical and you may get away
with +/- 5mm or so from the 146mm. There was a graph by "C" on the topic. Of
course when you approach the 40-50 mm image circle it becomes more and more
important.
