Just saw CP 9301 and 930x (missed number, but noted distinct cab shape)
passing my window at work travelling light westbound.. I assume up to
Vaughn. Interesting cabs, having never seen them in Real Life.

/Brian ... realizing how good he has it with the window at work overlooking

Famous Canadians who are railfans or modelers

A friend asked me this question that I am interested in answering, as the
subject implies, which famous Canadians are also avid railfans or model
railroaders? I guess in the context of my friend's question, even
politicians would apply, even though they are more categorized as "infamous"
than anything else.

Progress Rail Services, Canadian Pacific Railway Sign Agreement on Weston
Maintenance Shops in Winnipeg

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Florida Progress Corporation
(NYSE: FPC - news) announced today that Progress Rail Services Corporation and
Canadian Pacific Railway have reached an agreement for Progress Rail to acquire
and operate a major portion of CPR's maintenance and repair services at its
Weston Shops, in Winnipeg.

The agreement follows a November announcement that the two companies were in
negotiations for Progress Rail to lease and operate CPR's metal fabrication,
trackwork, and wheel shops at Winnipeg, along with associated material handling
and warehousing.

As a result, Progress Rail will become exclusive supplier of all of CPR's wheel
and trackwork needs in Canada, as well as perform similar work for other
customers utilizing the Weston facilities.

The agreement does not involve CPR locomotive repair and maintenance
facilities, the running car repair shop, and the signals and communications
equipment warehouse on the Weston site.

``This strategic partnership is an example of a win-win situation for the
railroad, the supplier and the labor force,'' said Progress Rail President
William P. Ainsworth. ``The Weston hub has for nearly a century built a strong
reputation for quality and customer satisfaction, and we are pleased to now be
a part of it under this pioneering and innovative agreement. It is another step
in Progress Rail Services continuing to be a leader in supplying quality
products and services to the North American railroad industry,'' he added.

``Weston Shops now begins an exciting new future as a beachhead facility for
one of North America's fastest-growing suppliers of railroad materials and
services,'' said Robert Ritchie, President and Chief Executive Officer of CPR.
``As Progress Rail's new base of operations for the Canadian and northern U.S.
markets, Weston Shops has new promise for greater stability and growth.

``Together with Progress Rail, we have achieved the best solution for the
long-term future of Weston Shops as an employer and contributor to the
economies of Winnipeg and the province of Manitoba,'' Mr. Ritchie said.

There is no job loss in the facilities being acquired. The 45 supervisory staff
have become employees of Progress Rail. The 345 unionized shop workers remain
employees of CPR, but will be managed by Progress Rail.

``We are pleased to see CPR and Progress Rail conclude an agreement that has no
adverse impact on jobs, and offers new hope for growth at Weston Shops,'' said
Abe Rosner, National Representative, Canadian Autoworkers Union.

Richard Page, Staff Representative, Transportation Communication Department
(Local 1976), United Steelworkers of America, representing clerical and
administrative employees, said: ``We are satisfied that a good strategic
partnership has been created at Weston Shops, with our members playing a key
role in the future success of the business.''

Progress Rail is one of North America's leading suppliers of railroad and
transit materials and services, including trackwork components, rail and rail
welding, new and reconditioned freight car and locomotive parts, railcar and
locomotive repair and leasing, track maintenance equipment and signal devices.
It has facilities in 22 states, Mexico, and Canada.

Progress Rail is a subsidiary of Electric Fuels Corporation, the lead company
in the energy and transportation group of Florida Progress Corporation, a
diversified utility holding company based in St. Petersburg, Fla.

CPR provides rail and intermodal freight transportation services over a
14,400-mile network extending from Montreal to Vancouver, and throughout the
U.S. Midwest and Northeast. Commercial alliances with other carriers extend
CPR's market reach beyond its own network. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓý ports on the east coasts of
Canada and the U.S., and the Port of Vancouver, CPR links North America with
European and Pacific Rim markets, moving large volumes of import and export
goods across the continent. It is also a leading carrier in the intermodal
industry, with 24 terminals across Canada and the northern U.S.

CPR STEAM-Feedwater Heaters-Tenders-Bells Etc.-B#84 Continued.

Donald Scott

B#84 Continued From March 22, 2000

Canadian Pacific Steam-Feedwater Heaters-Tenders-Wartime Locomotive
Bells-Etc.

I made a few errors in the same Post of March 22, and I will try and
correct them-much of the info from memory.

G-2 4-6-2 Pacific Type 2533 observed at Moose Jaw, Sask back in 1957,
being equipped with a larger higher capacity tender; 10,000 Imp. Gals.
water capacity. While checking my photograph of 2533 taken during that
trip, shows the locomotive as an oil-burner. The tender evidentally(not
sure)could came from a retired semi-streamlined heavy 4-6-2 of the 2300
or 2400 series. There were a few other light G-2 Class 4-6-2's in the
West that were oil-fired. Getting too technical takes too much time.

Speaking of heavy 4-6-2's of the 2700 number series, re-checking my
photgraphs, G-4 2716 was also an oil fired locomotive with the samaller
8-wheel tender. This locomotive worked pretty well betwen Revelstoke,
B.C.-Vancouver in passenger service. Two Western Canada G-4 4-6-2's
equipped with the 12-wheel tender in the mid-1930's one the 2714(both
coal-fired) were assigned to the partly owned subsidiary Toronto
Hamilton & Buffalo Railway on passenger service out of Toronto and were
equipped with automatic train control to operate on New York Central
trackage to Buffalo, N.Y. These were through New York City trains.
Little is known as to what year these locomotives came from the Prairies
to Toronto. Later the two sister engines went back to Western Canada
Both 2714 and 2715 received the Maroon paint scheme in 1936.

Speaking of the last of the T-1 2-10-4 streamlined "Selkirks" the T1-c
Class 5930 to 5935 built 1949 by Montreal Locomotive Works; the six
locomotives were equipped with the Elesco Feedwater Heater, not the
Worthington as mentioned.

Wartime Bells
During 1943 on one of my trips to Saint John, New Brunswick from
Moncton, on a Sunday morning, prior to boarding CN's eastbound train #14
back to Moncton; CP's "Atlantic Limited" from Montreal was pulling into
the station-"a strange sounding bell"-not the usual sounding CP brass
bell. For power was 4-8-2 2901 put on at McAdam, N.B. 2901,s bell was a
"Silver" colour-presume aluminum. On eastbound Montreal-Saint John, N.B.
train #40 was daily except Saturday, while "train #42 the "Atlantic
Limited" daily, but as this train number to Brownville Jct., Maine. At
Brownville a change of train number only in the 100 series eastward to
Saint John. The westbound train #39 Saint John-Montreal was daily except
Sundays a 2000 departure. Train #41 "Atlantic Limited" westbound was
daily. On Sundays eastbound and westbound between McAdam-Saint
John-McAdam 4-8-2,s 2900 and 2901 would take their turn on rotation.
Between 1943-1944 the semi-streamlined heavy 4-6-2's of the 2300 and
2400 series replaced light G-2,s of 2500 and 2600's on Montreal-Saint
John passenger service between Megantic, Quebec and McAdam. Locomotives
2394, 2395, 2396, 2397 and 2402 all in tuscan red-grey-black-gold
commenced runthrough from Montreal-McAdam, N.B. with 4-8-2's 2900 and
2901 taking over to Saint John on trains #39, #40, #41, and #42. Extra
sections, troop trains handled by G-2,s of 2500 and 2600's and P-1
2-8-2's of 5100 series-at times east/west double-heading. the 4-8-2's
2900 and 2901 days were numbered to be retired; and for a period
Montreal-Saint John trains between McAdam-Saint John ran double-headed
with G-2's of 2500s and 2600s.

The heavy semi-streamlined heavy 4-6-2's runs were extended from
McAdam-Saint John with 2394, 2395, 2396, 2397, 2402. Motive power
changes were made at McAdam, due to keeping these passenger trains on
schedule. Too much time would be lost at McAdam for coaling on east/west
trains.

In 1945, as more new G-3 Semi-streamlined heavy 4-6-2's were being
delivered from Canadian Locomotive Company of Kingston, Ont., brand new
2400's were assigned to Montreal-Saint John passenger trains: 2453,
2455, 2457, 2459 and 2461.
All arrived in "Black & Gold paint scheme, and with the "Wartime Bells"
later replaced with the "Brass Bell". Their boilers, firebox, cylinder
boxes all "Chrome". At that time all tenders were 8-wheel, and later
given higher capacity 12-wheel tenders; 12,000 Imp. Gals. for water,
coal capacity 21 tons instead of 18 tons for coal, 10,000 Imp. Gals. for
water.
Later locomotives 2453, 2455, 2457, 2459, 2461 all received the tuscan
red-Grey-black-gold paint scheme. Locomotive 2461 retained its 8-wheel
tender.

A few of the older G-3 non-semi-streamlined heavy 4-6-2,s of the 2300 to
2350 series locomotives lost their 12-wheel tenders and given the
8-wheel tender: 2317, 2331???, 2341 and possibly a few more.

Other semi-streamlined G-3 heavy 4-6-2 to arrive on Montreal Saint John
passenger service was 2467 and was re-equipped with a 12-wheel tender.
Locomotive 2392 done a short stint in the late 1940's in and out of
Saint John, either on the Boston "Gull" Saint John-Vanceboro, Maine or
on Montreal trains but retained its 8-wheel tender.

New Semi-Streamlined 2-8-2's of The 5400 Series-Delivered 1940 to 1948

CPR commenced taking delivery in 1940 of a new semi-streamlined 2-8-2
freight locomotive. The first were 5405 to 5416 being equipped with the
solid-plate or streamlined pilot the same as on the semi-streamlined
earlier 2300's that were assigned to Western Canada, and like the 2-10-4
streamlined "Selkirks" 5920 to 5929 assigned to the Rockies.
The 5405 to 5416 were the P2-g Class built by Montreal Locomotive Works.

In 1943 more 5400's 5417 to 5436 came out of Canadian Locomotive Company
of Kingston, Ont., and from that date on all future 5400's would have
the "Spoke Pilot".

In 1944 th P2-j Class came out of Montreal Locomotive Works-engines 5437
to 5461.

The last of the semi-streamlined 5400's the P2-k Class came out of
Montreal Locomotive Works in 1948-engines 5462 to 5473. These
locomotives were equipped with the "Worthington" feedwater heater, and
all assgined to Western Canada especially out of Calgary. The other
5400's were divided for freight service right across Canada, and by 1950
East of Farnham, Quebec through Maine to McAdam, N.B. and onto Saint
John. They developed a tractive effort of 57,500 Lbs.

Remarks: Earlier part of B#84 of March 22, a typing error 4-4-4 Jubilees
F2-a Class should read locomotives 3000 to 3004.
Next-2-8-2's of 5300 series-some re-equipped with 12-wheel
tenders-2-8-0's rebuilt to 2-8-2's.
To Be Continued.

Sort of ironical in that CP has recently lost thecontract to handle
containers for Canadian Tire. Then too off the back page of a recent issue

As I understand the termination date is not yet in force. And I have no

A little April Fool's Levity

Bob Eley

Dearly Beloved,

We are gathered here today in accordance with the FRA, AAR, TC and
other regulatory bodies to unite these two units in M.U. service. If
anyone takes exception, file your grievance or get in the clear.

(Groom's name) Do you take this woman to be your trailing unit, tying
down your pin lifter forever, and permanently restricting yourself
from interchange service, even with newer, freshly painted units,
remaining coupled despite flat wheels, sticking brakes, even unto bad
orders and major derailments, until you are both rendered unto scrap?
If so, signify by sounding your whistle as prescribed by CROR Rule
14 (b).

And,(Groom's name), do you promise to pull this unit up ruling grade,
using throttle and brake wisely to prevent rough train handling,
broken knuckles, and pulled drawbars, applying sand as necessary to
prevent wheel slip, so that you both crest the hill together,
regardless of the trailing tonnage? If so, signify by sounding your
whistle as prescribed by CROR Rule 14 (b). And do you also promise
not to cut away from your trailing unit, even when her side sheets
have rusted through, and her paint job has faded? If so, signify by
sounding your whistle as prescribed by CROR Rule 14 (b).

Now, (Bride's name), do you take this man to be your lead unit, tying
down your pin-lifter forever, and permanently removing yourself from
interchange service, even with newer series, high adhesion, high
horsepower units, remaining coupled despite flat wheels, sticking
brakes, even unto bad orders and major derailments, until you are
both rendered unto scrap?

If so, signify by sounding your whistle as prescribed by CROR Rule 14
(b). And do you promise to respond promptly to throttle and brake
commands from your lead unit, handling your share of the tonnage, and
helping your lead unit up ruling grade when necessary, being ever
cautious to avoid unnecessary drawbar buffer forces? If so, signify
by sounding your whistle as prescribed by CROR Rule 14 (b).

Do you also promise to remain coupled to your lead unit, even when he
has traction motors cut out, and can no longer develop full horse-
power? If so, signify by sounding your whistle as prescribed by CROR
Rule 14 (b).

Now, (Bride and Groom), as a token of your intent to M.U., make the
joint and stretch the slack.

By the power invested in me by the General Manager, Superintendent of
Operations, and the Road Foreman of Engines, I now pronounce you
permanently coupled. You may cut in the air.

OSRX NW2 #51 (ex-TH&B 51) and OSRX SW9 #52 (ex-PSTR L3; ex-C&O 5242) were
moved from Clarkson to Guelph Junction on April 7, 1998 (give or take a
